I love the feedback about what to do after school. I graduated with a major in Graphic Design and a minor in Illustration and I feel like really all that I got from school was stuff I could've studied myself outside of class. The major points I've learned the importance of: - Find your voice. The only way to do that is to start making work in areas that you enjoy, even if they are only passion projects. Your unique hand will appear in everything you do, that naturally comes with playing and trying things. - Only put work in your portfolio that you TRULY want to get hired for. That means work on passion projects and start squeezing out that Uni work. - A big one that I still struggle with is how to sell yourself through social media and how best to work as a freelance or contract worker. I've recently learned through Illustration forums and social media that art directors really do hire frequently through these avenues. We never really covered much in this area in my schooling so I'm scrambling to make that happen now. - Keep learning! Keep teaching yourself new things. I started with photography. Then went into ink. Then digital. Now I've gone back to analog to take on watercolor, gouache, and colored pencil. All of these are bound together by my love of texture. Now I'm in a place where I can combine them all for something that's unique to me. (Lookin' at you, SKILLSHARE) - If trends are your thing, then learn the best ways to keep up with those trends. Things like illustration for home decor and clothing always have current trends and/ or palettes to be up on seasonally. This can better sales and get you hired by shops that your work appeals to. - The biggest take-away for me here is discipline. You hear constantly to really love what you do or doing it will be hell. That's true for art. Most people don't choose it for the money, they are in it for the freedom. That freedom means different things to different people. What I think we can all agree on is that you can't really get anywhere with it unless you are "in it" in some way all the time: learning, doing, experimenting, collaborating.

I completely agree that no one really cares how you learned what you do, as long as you STILL do it and you're making consistent work you're proud of. People will ask where I learned filmmaking in passing, but nobody has ever used it as a qualifyer for whether or not they wanted to work with me. Just make stuff. I'm trying to get better at making personal films so that I'll get booked for the kind of stuff I really want to do! :) By the way Sha'an, I love your videos so much. Your relationship and joy with Rocket reminds me of my relationship with my husband. Every time I watch one of your videos, I'm always like, "Aw! They're like us!" :D

Anywho I really enjoy your process and your building stuff and the online drawing practice you guys did and your Q/A and your HONESTY about university. Find the balance and keep creating and inspiring MEEEEEE... :) OH! Yes! I built my desk also but I used hairpin legs and I have no wheels but it still works for me...maybe in the future I will swop out these legs and replace them with legs that can have wheels attached. SEEE how inspiring you are...! OH and that square space is ezzzeee! I like who I am with now but if I ever change it would be to square space...ThankX!!

I ordered them from Amazon and the best way I can explain it is that they look like a bobby pin upside down...but sturdy as the table top is really a found barn wood door. I like the airy openness around the table like your table. Still debating if I want to make a slim long desk draw for my drawing pencils and paper underneath. The advise about not depending so much on your certs is so important because sometimes (or actually most of the time), this is the kinda "experience" people are looking for - if you did anything outside of uni like interning/assistant jobs. I agree with your university advice so much. In my area its uncommon for students to be working so you don’t get this kind of advice, but i wish that I’ve done that during my student years THE MOST and regretted it for a long while before moving on. When applying anywhere it got to the point where i was so let down and thinking “does adding my degree to my cv mean anything?”. I know its valuable ofc, but I realized how the most important thing is to at least have a presentable portfolio of even my noobest works because thats what everyones looking for. Its not even the hardest thing to do, but could’ve started it wayyyy earlier.

I've been learning to use illustrator during quarantine, and your vlog is such an inspiration! I totally agree with what you said about your style never being a finished thing, its always evolving. I think its good to have a clear 'why' though. Once you find it you can experiment with a lot of stuff but there will always be a golden thread throughout your work, I think.
