I once made a 4 foot by 6 foot self portrait of my face entirely in crayons just because my college professor said it would be too difficult 😅. There’s no erasing, but what I did find is if the wax builds up more than you can draw on you can iron it off with a second piece of paper. This sends all the pigment into the paper and removes the excess wax. Then you layer on it again! Really expands your color pallet! It should also be noted that some colors, like red, require more oil to be saturated as compared to other cooler colors so blending with different consistencies can be challenging.

I think you would enjoy stabilo woody pencils if you haven’t tried them already! They are my go to for warming up and just doodling like a child (they are made for kids lol) but still very pigmented and the color range is actually pretty nice!! They won’t break in your hand under your pressure since they are a chunky wood
@ellieriggart2 жыл бұрын
I really like the free, playful nature to this piece with both the cheap supplies and your art style! I totally agree with you on your point of loosening up with your art every once in a while, it's not only fun but you often surprise yourself by unintentionally coming up with new ideas, and techniques etc. Time to dig out my old crayons I think...

This reminded me of my first time using oil pastels in years. I remember hating oil pastels when I was a child, but then when we need to use one for one of my uni projects, I was really surprised how great they were! It was like using oil paints but in sticks lol. I really loved this video.

I had the same opinion when it came to oil pastels as a kid but now in my adult years I LOVE the messy look I get with the illustrations I make 🥰 I love drawing characters and using pastels for their hair to give it some texture ❤️

So much fun! I loved the freeness! There are many really beautiful oil pastels but they are messy! I love layering them and then making sgraffito marks, but yeah, super messy. You could try water-soluble wax crayons, they are a lot fun! But not cheap.

I love this kind of content!! Experimenting with new and cheap art supplies for fun! I like studio vlogs and all but sometimes, especially lately since I’ve been sick, they make me feel bad about my own productivity or lack there of, while as these types of videos are so light hearted, fun, freeing and inspiring!

Ehiiiiii, I reeeeeally loved this video! It was also refreshing to just watch it - and, yeah, maybe I should visit a cheap-art-supply-shop! As for GOOD oil pastels, I think no brand (that I know) can be compared, not even remotely, to Sennelier! And I heard they were created specifically for Picasso when he stopped at the Sennelier shop and said, "Ehi, need some oil paint that I can carry around and paint with without the hassle of solvents blah blah blah." And that's what they created! :-) Looking forwards to the next video! You can never have too much Furrylittlepeach! Hugs from cold and gray London!

Wonderful. It definitely makes me want to go play with more mediums. I have so many supplies that I hardly ever use. Also, that final drawing is soooo cute. I would definitely buy it if you made a print of it. I'm sure that's not your intent, as it's just a sketch but the energy and playfulness shows in the finished result which would be a pleasure to look at everyday

What a great video! It’s always nice to try out supplies without pressure. I used to use oil pastel a lot in college for creating colour stories and I used linseed oil to blend them, it can get messy but it’s fun as well. ✨

I quite enjoy using student grade(it's actually for children) faber-castell oil pastels, I'm sure they aren't near anything professional quality(in a archival sense) but I also don't think spending too much on oil pastel makes that much difference. A pack of 24 is around 8 dollars and the studio quality version is around 19 dollars for 36 pieces. I also like pentel arts oil pastels, a pack of 50 is around 9 dollars(0.17 per piece), they work really well, vibrant colors, easy to blend and really fun to use :) p.s. I've seen many youtubers use gallery mungyo, never used them but if you want to get into the medium you might as well start from there given the immense popularity.

So playful, the cheap supplies really did get you to loosen up a huge amount - they have a certain naive quality to them. I love this format of videos, they’re always great to work alongside and I enjoy seeing other artists trying out supplies - as for suggestions, have you tried painting with watercolours and gouache on toned paper recently? This is another medium that could force you to loosen up as toned paper is never particularly thick so you have to really limit the amount of paint and water you apply
