I wanna buy oil pastels for the first time and strongly consider the Caran d'Ache ones. Knowing that you also tried the neo pastels - how big is the difference to a bit more affordable pastels?
@PearFleur2 жыл бұрын
@@basho4306 As of now, I prefer the pentel ones, but mostly because I feel like I can be less precious with them. I would definitely recommend the Caran D'ache ones for those looking for creamier, softer, and richer pastels!
@lechatel2 жыл бұрын
I have been using oil pastels as my main medium for many years. I have different brands which range in terms of hardness and pigment. (Sennelier being the softest/ most unctuous). I have developed a range of techniques including variations of the main ones you illustrate. I tend to use cheap acrylics as a ground on most supports as it adds depth to the work. I also apply pastels sometimes by using white spirit and unwrapping them so that I use the sides rather than the tip. Then I bathe the pastel gently and apply in bold strokes to cover larger areas. This is also excellent for using one colour to blend several others. (Sennelier also does an unpigmented pastel which is very useful for blending when you don't want to add colour.) It can and does get very messy. (My nails don't look like yours, sadly. lol) Another technique I use is to use oil pastel over chalk pastel and vice versa. It gives some interesting effects, particularly useful when doing something like a sky and adding clouds, as an example. I also use them over oil paints and when the paint is tacky and almost set. You can use the pastel to push the paint around and add a punch of colour. I use them on 'colorfast' paper which has a good tooth. Or canvas board with added texture using various things like sand and pummice. They are endless fun.

I remember having to do oil pastels in art class and hating it because I couldn’t build up any color. Now I realize the teacher had probably given us the wrong paper😅 Watching you makes me want to try it again!

I bought these on my own as just something new to try as a very non-artistic person. My interest might've been held for longer than a week had I known I was trying to use pastels on basic drawing paper and that's a no-no, lol.

as an artist (my art is on my yt channel if you'd like to check it out) I can totally relate!! it was pretty hard to use oil pastels for me just because my art teacher gave me the wrong type of paper to use (she gave us regular construction paper :,))
@wynfrithnichtwo84232 жыл бұрын
@Ve3-j4h Dark Sky BadBlack sanded works with both types and all hardness grades of pastels. Technically speaking oil pastels will work on almost any support a person could come up with such as rocks, wood, various varieties of paper and canvas, glass, etc, etc, etc; however, to answer your question sanded papers work.
@ARTLAVASTuDioLoRiCH2 жыл бұрын
@Ve3-j4h Dark Sky BadBlack paper which is meant for oil painting bec the paper needs to be primed for oil medium. If not, then the oil in oil paint and oil pastels will "eat up" the paper and the oil will seep thru.

After my grandpa died a few years ago I got a bunch of his art supplies, many of which looked to have been untouched for decades judging by the styles of the packaging, and that included his oil pastels which were totally dried out which was a bummer to me, but I think his soft pastels are still functional so I gotta remember to learn how to work with those one day, and then another day get some decent oil pastels of my own cause it looks so fun to use.

I taught elementary school art and loved using the Crayola Portfolio series with some Pentel oil pastels for extra whites, etc. Portfolios are soft so they break and smush easily which can be a drawback with kids and they are also water-soluable. But the colors are great and blend easily, looking fantastic even on sulphate construction paper. I used clear unscented AquaNet hairspray as fixative. Once a set that was sourced through our district distributor had yellows that molded once on the paper. I called Crayola from the classroom with the kids present and told the rep I had some unhappy campers in my room as their work was ruined. The company sent a total replacement set for free. I'm not a fan of the stiffness of oil pastels in general but cannot use chalk pastels, sadly, as I am allergic to the dust - as were some of my students.

Ooh, this feels so nostalgic for me. When I took art classes as a teen, we almost worked exclusively with oil pastels (I think my teacher liked them because they were relatively cheap and easy to clean up). I didn't like them at first because it felt like it was only a small step up from drawing with crayons as a kid, and I wanted to use the more 'glamorous' mediums like gouache or oil paint. However, as I worked with them, I came to appreciate this medium in itself. I like the texture it produces, the feel of the oil pastel in my grasp, the ease we which you can use it, the different effects it produces... Watching your video has inspired me to go find my old oil pastels (hopefully they haven't dried up!) and try using them again.

Lovely video. I have this same set, I bought it recently after digging out my old 12 set from the same brand and playing around with them and actually enjoyed blending the colours together. I had never seen anyone use them when I bought the first set so never understood what to do with them, got frustrated and put them aside but this time around I had so much fun with them. It helps that they are so cheap so you don’t have to feel too precious about it.
