I'm curious, if you're able to share, how often you get paid in installments throughout the duration of a job versus getting paid once the deliverables are sent to the client. In the US, most clients will only pay you once you've delivered final artwork (which typically means 30-90 days AFTER you deliver work). Does it help to have a producer during the negotiating process?

I don't mean to butt in, but I wanted to add my two cents! if you're taking on the commission work because you need the money, view it as simply that - a job. do your best to deliver quality work that will make the client happy, push thru and take the oppourtunity as a learning experience for a new technique or style, or even just in managing a commissioned project. then, spend your free time developing the work that you actually want to create! try imagining the kind of client work that you'd like to receive that makes you feel good and inspired. share that work in your portfolio, and you'll find more work geared towards your style comes in the future and not have to say yes to work you don't want to do just for the paycheque! hope this is helpful! 💕

Hi gorgeous, I stopped taking private commission work a long time ago for the same reason. I think if you're going to be making stuff that drains you, you might as well find work you like and then make personal work on the side. Just food for thought, take it with a grain of salt of course. Regarding your situation now, is there a way you can mold it into something that interests you, if it's a portrait, could you explore new ways to draw people, or use this project to explore unusual colour palettes? Other than that, just realise you're going to have to do it anyway, bite the bullet and get it done. You'll just feel like poop if it drags on, and once your done you can move onto something you find more stimulating! Also, snacks.

furrylittlepeach I am a huge advocate for snacks! But 100% just push through. Break the project up into smaller pieces and tackle it one at a time. The quicker it’s done the quicker you can do things you are more passionate about.

It’s really hard as a small artist who only in the past few years have added color learned how to paint and started taking myself seriously I’ve had many people hit me up with ideas and tattoos they want and work they want me to do for them and it usually is stuff I don’t do or wouldn’t do and don’t find enjoyable or creative but it’s money and my boyfriend tells me if I want to be an artist and sell my work and get out there I might just have to put up with it and make things people want until I’m big enough I have a normal job and I’m very picky and go through depression so it may take me longer so I only take the serious jobs where people can pay me and I won’t be completely miserable keep morals and only take work that fits with your values so you are happy and don’t contradict yourself. Once you take the job you just gotta work through it so you keep up your end and once your done you will be done and feel better

sometimes I don't. Sometimes stress is super overwhelming! I think when you love what you do, working hard can seem a lot more worth it. So in the end when I'm stressed, I remind myself that this is what I wanna be doing, and every job is hard. The most stressed I get is before talks, in that case I try not to overthink it, and think about how it's 1 hour of my life and then its over haha. I'm not sure if this is helpful!!

What stores do you shop for clothes? Ive been watching you for years and always loved your style but never bothered to wonder until now!

My favourite brands are Gorman, Marimekko and Lazy Oafs, all of them do really striking patterns. When I wanna go for basics, I will usually shop at retailers like Glue which house a bunch of denim brands and stuff. And then I like to thrift too, but I can't be in there for long because of the dust (I'm allergic and I totally sneeze up a storm!). I don't only stick to these stores, I really like walking around and shopping, but those are the ones I think of when I think of stores I shop at!
