My therapist told me that not doing something or procrastinating usage the same energy as if we do what we are avoiding. So the motivation is there but for the incorrect direction.

Yep, that's why after a full day of procrastinating on work and beating yourself up about it, you can feel as tired as after a full day of work.

Another tip about feeling productive, I'm a musician in year 12 atm, and I try to make sure that everyday I practice for at least 15 mins, or if I'm feeling really unmotivated, I simply listen to my pieces and follow along with the music. The small time commitment means that I don't feel pressured into doing things for a long time if I'm not up for it, but often once I start I can often play for much longer. It also helps to know that this practice is not a performance, and I am the only one who needs to know what goes on during that time :)

Agree! Feels like people have this idea that ADHDbrainers either can't or don't need planning, but my days & weeks are planned to the details!!! Otherwise my life would NOT function AT ALL lol (hello hyper focus, burnout & workaholic tendencies). I use a kind of similar model as she & it's as you say, a good structured way but flexible too! Also: having small to-do's to check of during the day is a great motivation activator for a brain that has a difficency in exactly that area. Gotta do what you gotta do to trick that brain!

i've found one thing that works for me in balancing assignments and personal work - is that after working on assignments, i will reward myself with breaks and to work on personal stuff during those breaks. it helps me look forward to working on personal pieces and to get excited and play around with having freedom in what i create. sometimes it goes the other way too. if i feel burnt out i can work on less creative things to recharge and to take my mind off the more detailed things.

"You need to take care of yourself so you can create your best work." I remember meeting Sha'an at a general assembly creatives talk back in Melbourne 2 years ago. I personally haven't done any creatives work AT ALL for the the past 3 years back then because I was so crippled at the thought of even starting because I was so scared about being rusty. I remember telling Sha'an about that and her telling me that it's okay to have creative blocks and that we shouldn't push it. It stuck to me for the longest time. 2 years later, I've gotten back into it, started doing commission works and have fallen in love with the process again. Thank you Sha'an!

In relation to the breaking up the work time versus play time, I've found it helpful to break up my space into "zones", like Im only allowed to play video games on my bed while I do my work at my desk. This is helpful to me cause sometimes I'm too lazy to get up and walk over to the bed and dig out and set up the things I need to play games.

I'm in the pre beginning stages of working on my book series and have started creating a productivity system for myself. I'm definitely downloading the template. I love what you said about having a safe space to create. It's so important to the process. I don't want to get into the habit of being afraid of sharing my work due to my perfectionist tendencies but I also don't want to feel pressure to share so I made a private IG page where I can see my progress but still feel safe to create and play.

LET ME TELL YA SOMETHING SHA'AN! Since watching this video and starting to use your planning method I have DOUBLED the amount of things I've been able to get done in a week. My planner has a little space to record "total to-dos done" at the end of the week, so it's been cool to see that number grow! I've also fixed my messed up sleep schedule and I'll just say that learning your method helped that problem get solved too. Thank you for sharing your art and your strategies!

I love this video because your method of organizing tasks into manageable pieces is the recommended process for people who have anxiety about moving forward. It is often paired with CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), to help make the changes or take steps that are needed to do the next phase of growth. It is also recommended to people in general because it's such a great method for productivity. Also, for those who struggle with starting and completing a task, there is a last step: Review. You ask yourself questions about the task like, "Did you succeed or not? What kept you from doing the task? What are some solutions to the hindrances that occurred? Is this doable or does it require more steps or subtasks?" then rewrite your task with the solutions in mind. Can't stress this enough how awesome her suggestions are!

SHA'AN! Thank you for this! I have a similar method and planner with week to a page on the left and blank page for brainstorming and to-dos on the right. What I'd love to incorporate from your method is having the long term goals somewhere big and visible at my desk. I feel like I sometimes get bogged down with all the busy work and sub tasks, so it'd be nice to have the big vision around to remind me why I'm doing what I'm doing. For both personal and professional goals. Yay! Perfect video for the end of the month. Here's to a productive June!♡♡ Thank you again, my dear! Thank you so much for this video! SO helpful. I had a similar system going (weekly priorities) but never thought to compile a separate list to pull smaller tasks from. I also used to schedule my day by every HALF-HOUR - which is terrible and takes all the fun out of the creative process and stresses me out. A few weeks ago I switched to not assigning a time for anything, and let myself fully focus on each task at hand without worrying I was "behind schedule". I'm excited to try this method!

i'd love to hear more about how you work with clients, for example taking feedback, or how to eloquently teach clients the dos and don'ts. I feel like when I get client feedback that I....don't agree with, I get super defensive, and feel like my skills and knowledge aren't being trusted. I've also had problems with recently with work being used where it shouldn't be, or a client asking for more work after the completion of a project without compensation. I'm always split between running a business and being nice, and definitely afraid of feeling greedy!
@furrylittlepeach
@furrylittlepeach 4 жыл бұрын
Hello angel! I can definitely talk about this more in another video, but just to quickly answer it here. You should be clearly laying out deliverables and licensing before you begin the project. We usually sign contracts with our larger clients that cover this, but we also present our own written agreement that specifies costs, deliverables, project duration, how many rounds of feedback, kill fees, payment terms etc. Having a document ready for every project that outlines all of this means you don't need to feel bad when you're asserting the conditions of the project because they've already agreed to them. In relation to the client feedback you don't agree with - try to differentiate between whether you're hurt that they want to change something because it doesn't align with your vision and wants or if you actually haven't addressed their needs in the creative solution. When we work with clients illustration is a service, and for us to be successful our client should be happy. When I was young and still doing design I used to make the mistake of blaming clients for "bad feedback", but really it is our job to educate and convince our clients about why something is not a great idea. We should be looking out for their best interests and there will always be a solution that meets their needs and ours - it can just take a little while to find the solution. I get defensive to begin with to, but I never respond until I have found a solution I am happy with. If I really believe their feedback is at the detriment of the project I will gently explain why and try to get them to come to that conclusion themselves. If you are uncooperative or brash it is likely you will not have the chance to work with them again. IMO it's never a choice of running a business OR being nice. You can educate while being kind, while asserting yourself and cleverly running your business. The confidence to do this will come with experience but keeping all of the above in mind may help you get there faster. I am very fortunate to be at a point where my clients come to me for my work, so often it doesn't take too much to keep both parties happy, but if you aren't in that place yet and aren't happy showcasing your commercial work maybe schedule in some personal projects that really showcase your skills and your creative voice - it can be a tool to use in the future to show clients what you mean and maybe why their feedback may not be the right route.
@furrylittlepeach
@furrylittlepeach 4 жыл бұрын
sorry for the super long response!! I hope it helps and doesn't come across like I'm not on your side, I just feel like being honest is going to help you most. One other note: try not to take feedback as they don't trust you, take it as a suggestion or a question. everyone has different experience and they might be tackling the problem from a different angle which means their solution looks a little different to yours.

Every Animal Crossing anecdote in this video is... Uncannily relatable 😳 I use a similar system to yours, Sha'an, though my work and personal/outside-the-office pursuits have separate diaries, which I feel is more suited to my current job. The personal one is like yours. The work one is a freebie day-to-a-page diary that work gives out - I use lil sticky notes for my task dumps instead. Each project I'm on gets its own sticky note, and they move around with the days, or float around the front inside cover if I'm not actively working on something but am still thinking about it. Kinda like a dashboard. Every morning I get my day's task list in order, and mark the non-negotiable tasks. At the end of each day, I relocate any incomplete/leftover tasks to the next day so they don't accidentally get missed. This enables me to keep my days flexible, but also reminds me that while not everything has to get done immediately, there will come a time when I will eventually have to stop transferring the item to the next day and just do the thing, or nix the task entirely because it clearly wasn't important enough to the process. I love capping off the day by looking over tomorrow's schedule, and basically doing future-me a favour by preparing whatever I can to help the next morning start smoothly. (Very satisfying!) My favourite thing to remember is to "eat the frog". Whenever it's possible, I do the most dreaded things first! So it's not hanging over my head all day. Makes the rest of the day feel like a real treat. Thanks for making this video - you shared lots of tools to add to the toolbox! Take care 🤗

I stay productive as far as creating (I'm an artist & make KZbin videos) by not taking too long of a break from creating. When I say creating I don't mean a finished amazing piece - I mean that I'm daily in my sketchbook or "showing up" to make a simple easy piece of art or I'm working on my videos. I find that creating feeds my creativity. When I take too long of a break from art I find it hard to get back into the groove.

Love it! I’m gonna try it this month. I’m always struggling with big item todo list. Writing down smaller sub task is a great idea. Would love to see more of these productivity/planning stuff as I admire how you are able to produce so many things and work on so many things.

loved this! It would be really awesome to learn how you organize your files on your laptop between client and personal work. I find the nuances of remembering storage, file types, and years get fuzzy after a while.

So I'm very bad with keeping up with journals haha! Instead, I'm using the notes app from apple. I've been using this week and have been so productive and been on point! Thank you so much!

I’m gonna try this type of layout this week ! I love organizing my tasks but I haven’t found the “perfect” layout and system to go about it yet. I feel confident with how you go about planning your week. I’m excited lol ❤️

I love this video!😍 when I work on long projects I set a 90min timer and that tells me when I need to take a break😄 and I find that I can stay productive for 90mins if I can see the time going down😂

I find that going outside for fresh air or exercising to be a great way to get ready for productivity 🌻 but also, if I spend too long doing it, the tasks I have to do become more stressful because of the lost time 😆

Yes!!! I've been walking every day during covid and its been so nice. Before there would be some days I didn't leave the house. I'm definitely going to be keeping it as a regular part of my routine when things calm down! Great advice!!
