This is what it means to be a furry. Putting effort into something so tedious but rewarding in the end out of something you love. It's the artistic passion of the community that joins us together in our love of these amazing anthropomorphic beings.

To the people asking, the clay sculpt here is NOT the actual mask. It's the base, what the mask is made from. A mold is then made from this sculpt and finally, a resin, light-weight, finished mask will be made from that mold.

I suggest looking into what works best for you, but quick-setting liquid resin should work fine. A company by the name of "Smooth-On" makes a lot of resins, I don't know exactly what kind to use.

if you make this out of clay, what's the cheapest option for a mold? (I know people do that rubber box method but that looks expensive)

Cybera Shivak Epoxy resin can be used for an fursuit mask and for the mold i would recommend silicone.

Despite this being a resin mask, it's really helpful for those like myself that plan on making foam heads to see where to add extra padding to form the desired shape of the animal you're going for. Thanks for this video!(:

well, the good thing about resin masks is it's easy to recreate with a mold once you do it... and it also allows smaller headshapes AND easier ventilation. but foam is cheaper for the first head if you're only doing one.

@TheRazorKitten The sculpt is clay and the mask will be slush cast resin (a thin resin shell like a masquerade mask) and then padded out with carved foam for comfort inside and to form the rest of the head/ features specific to the character or species.

Man, I'm artistic and could make a fursuit head, but I just get lost in all the materials and techniques and steps. I've made two foam heads, the first was huge and the most uncomfortable thing I've ever had on my body and the second was also enormous but just looked derpy.

okay I take back the foam comment, I hadn't seen the whole vid. I'm pretty sure that's just clay, and it's a base for slush casting resin.... I could be off though... I can't tell from the images. Because yeah if that wasn't a resin shell it could be pretty heavy.

This sculpture is *for* the resign. It's being made so they can make a silicone mold around the clay base and then they use the mold to create a hollow resign mask for the fursuit head.

+Taijitu KGriffon (NitrousAircraft) It's a cool process! I myself, am planning to do a life cast of my head (using smooth-on silicone) then using that mold to make the clay base for the fursuit (what she's doing here) then I'm going to cast the mold with silicone, like I did with my head. By doing the mold of your head with a life cast , you don't have to use a store bought one and the resign mask in the end will fit to your face much nicer. When its hinged and done, the jaw will open and close perfectly since it's an exact fit. It's more money and a lot more work, but the product you get will have much higher quality and you can use the life cast to make more molds of your head for any project.
