Jamaison, that piece is absolutely beautiful! I was asked, last year to do the same thing for a friend of a friend and while I liked the result and it was definitely to the liking of the end customer, I really wanted something more along the lines of what you created. Honestly, that is the loveliest piece I have seen of that type, gorgeous pendant shape as well. You hit that one out of the park! :-)

This is exactly what I want to do for my family with my mom’s ashes. I have my mom’s kiln and all her stained glass and fusing supplies. Problem is I don’t know how to use it. 😆 Hoping I can figure it out.

Thanks very much-- I used this process this week to make a similarly beautiful glass pendant from my recently deceased cat's cremains. I really appreciate your post!

Where do I find the firing schedules? This was fantastic!
@tranick83 жыл бұрын
I have sifted ash on to a solid piece of glass then covered with frit and the ash seems to come to the surface and feel rough and look chalky. would you recommend covering with thin layer of frit and fire again? I was hoping to achieve a shiny smooth surface in one firing. Is this not likely with ash?
@JamaisonSchuler3 жыл бұрын
I would think the frit tends to melt and settle around the ash and not give you enough of a protective layer, especially if you are only using a small amount of powder or fine frit. I think thickness and density is your friend here, so I would use chunks of 2 or 3mm sheet glass or coarse frit. I essentially “cap” with a small solid piece of clear to ensure the ash is fully encapsulated. Even coarse frit could melt to one side or another creating a crack or vein for ash to peek through. So if this were my piece was was trying to save it, I’d either cap with sheet glass or a heavy layer of frit, not a thin layer as you said. Just remember that frit traps air and can itself look cloudy if you layer it on too thick. Good luck.

Hi Jaiason, I note that on instructions you say to prefire ashes to 1500f in quick fire kiln. As I don't have a quick fire do you have any recommendations for regular kiln. Starting today on creating memorial pieces for friends son & want to ensure that I do my best Thank you in advance for your help & for this instructional video Cheers Kat

just rewatched your additional video on doing ashes & it appears that you used regular FF in regular kiln Thanks again
@JamaisonSchuler3 ай бұрын
Yes, regular full Fuhs would be fine. Basically take it up to the same temperature and maybe hotter and/or hold it a little longer than what you’re gonna do for your actual final firing.

Hi Jamaison, where can I get the mold you used?
@JamaisonSchuler3 жыл бұрын
It was a jewelry frit casting mold from Creative Paradise. They have many on their website... I think my mold is similar to this one: www.creativeparadiseglass.com/product-p/lf151.htm

This is such a beautiful piece, and your video is so respectful and well laid out. I am trying this for a family member and I have a question. Were the ashes fused on the irid side of the glass or the back? Thank you so much for sharing your information with us. This really is the most beautiful piece I've ever seen with memorial ashes.
@JamaisonSchuler4 жыл бұрын
The french vanilla frit was the base layer, then ashes, then clear cap with irid facing down, against the ashes. Thank you for your kind feedback and good luck!
@juliedumas11324 жыл бұрын
@@JamaisonSchuler When you prefired the ashes in your Quick Fire kiln, were they on a piece of glass, or just kiln shelf? I don't have a Quick Fire so used my regular kiln, with a slower ramp than AFAP. I sifted mine on some iridized clear, and they adhered to the glass, but when I full fused them on the frit base, arid side down, they didn't show up as beautifully. I would appreciate any feedback you might have.
@JamaisonSchuler4 жыл бұрын
I just pre-fired them directly on a kiln shelf by themselves. Then I sifted them to use the finer powder, and I placed that powder on my pre-fired frit, capped with clear and fired.

I'm wondering, can this process be completed using a microwave kiln? I have a regular electric kiln, but we don't yet have a hookup for it where we've moved...I'm wondering if a microwave kiln would work, but I've never used one of those...
@JamaisonSchuler3 жыл бұрын
I don’t know… I don’t have an experience with a microwave kiln.
@mikebgold3 ай бұрын
yes it can be done with a microwave kiln but sometimes the glass gets too hot and ashes tend to gather into the center.
