I found this very useful, the hard part which I had to replay was the transfer from covalent bonds being strong in a molecule to bonds between molecules being weak. Good place where students might create misconceptions.

This is a basic physics question I don’t know the answer to and perhaps someone would be kind enough to help. When electrons circle nuclei in covalent compounds, do or can the electrons get shared between the elements, traveling in figure 8s and circling multiple elements of the compound? Thx
@njsevers
@njsevers 3 жыл бұрын
Overall great video (and the rest of the chemistry ones). But the use of the word compound throughout this video is fundamentally wrong! A compound consists of more than one element bonded, therefore diamond is not a giant compound, nor is C70 etc. Also the displayed formula for hydrogen chloride should be H-Cl (lower case l) not H-CL.

Can a molecule with a full valance shell bond with an atom that doesn't have a full valence shell?
@fuseschool
@fuseschool 3 жыл бұрын
The atoms with a full valence shell are the noble gases - the larger atoms, especially Xenon, can form stable compounds with Fluorine, which is the most strongly electronegative element (attracts electrons strongly). Between molecules 'dative' bonds are common - e.g. the oxygen atom in water has a full valence shell but readily bonds with atoms needing two electrons to form a bond, such as H+ bonding to form H3O+ (hydronium ion).

Does this only happen to non-metals?
@urmom-zr3pd
@urmom-zr3pd 4 жыл бұрын
Covalent bonds happen when 2 nonmetals share electrons and ionic bonds are when a metal and nonmetal attract because 1 might give a valence electron away making it positive and when the other atom gets that valence electron its negative then they fuse together. So yes if you are talking about covalent molecular bonds then it has to be 2 nonmetals.😃hope that helped you should watch Tyler Dewitt’s covalent vs ionic if you’re really interested
