This is because some of these elements have their number of electrons beside them or beside both. They are used to determine how many of the elements are going to be used in the formula or how many elements are going to be shared.

I still don't get what's the difference between the outer shell diagram, and the dot cross diagram. The one shown in the video as dot cross diagrams, my chemistry teacher calls them the outer shell diagrams and draws something different for the dot cross diagrams.
