Thanks Lars. I was also confused about heights and was working from the top down. Your explanation is much better.

hey lars, great vid, it took my a while to figure these out...i did not hear mention of the following in the heights tab for the drilling operation.. the feed height setting controls what the height the tool will rapid to...then once it reaches that feed height setting, it continues down to the hole but at the feed rate setting (plunge rate) that is set in feeds and feeds tab . so sometimes if i have a really small drill bit that requires a feedrate of say 3 ipm, with a chip breaking partial or full retract cycle it can take a really long time for it to get down to the hole if my part is kinda tall.. so i set the feed height lower and closer to the hole top (+1mm above hole top)and make sure my retract height is high enough for the tool tip to clear any obstacles that may be hit when the tool tip is moving from hole to hole. rick

Hi Lars, First Thank You for all the great Videos. I use you, Titans of CNC, Lets Machine and NYC CNC for my CAD and or CAM training, you all are awesome. One trick I picked up on with Heights was for facing, 2D contouring and Pockets was to set all the tabs to Model Top and use dimensions for the positions. After doing that a bit it was easier, for me anyway, to get a better handle on what each does in a given operation. Now I may vary it a little for different things, but it removed or simplified it for me starting out. What are your thoughts on that, can you see any disadvantages to doing it that way? Thanks again, Mark
@cadcamstuff
@cadcamstuff 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Browningmotorsports Thank you for watching! Titan and John Saunders are both on my hero wall :-) No, I think that is a totally legit way to do it. Thinking about it, if I was programming a part that also had a 2D print, I might do it your way. Just because the print dimensions would overrule anything else :-) Best, Lars

Lars, you got me over the hump. I was confused trying to understand what the software was trying to tell me with the color of the height clearance planes. If the table settings color matched their respective planes I probably would have figured it out. Thanks

I know I'm nit picking, but I'm just curious why you choose the top height as the stock top (which isn't there anymore since it's been faced off) and not the model top? Just curious... This means your tool would be machining in 1mm of emptiness...

Hello Lars. When I post a facing operation, the software is automatically removing .135 (it is subtracting my model finish dimension from the stock dimension, then dividing it by 2) How to i tell the software to only remove .020 on the facing operation? Thank's so much! dave.

im having the same trouble as Jeremy: "I'm still confused. when i press go, it wants to run straight across the top of my model to the starting point instead of retracting then moving. but during the operation it retracts like it should."

So I'm struggling with a problem that I can't seem to figure out. For years now I've set my retract height to .01" to reduce the time the machine takes to rapid up. Especially in tight 3d adaptive operations where the tool rapids up in z many many times. The problem is no matter what I program the retract height to be, it's always way higher than I programmed. Not only that, but it never changes the retract height at all unless I make it some absurd height. I've checked my setup model, and have tried every option there is in the heights tab. Please help!

Hi great videos followed and placed a basic shape on the top plane z axis up y point to rear and x left to right as you look at the screen , my object is on the top plane when I select the bottom perimeter and add tabs the point direct upwards instead of out to the side ?

Lars A good video on a point of confusion. My question is: why after the facing operation, wouldn't using 'Model Top' instead of 'Stock top' on the subsequent operations be a more logical reference? I never have need to 'face' a part.
@cadcamstuff
@cadcamstuff 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim Mac Thank you for watching! I you stock is set to the same height as the model, or if you have done the facing, they are the same. But, most CAM people are very caution minded, so I think most people like the safety of stock top. Great question. Hope you have an awesome day!

I think that was not the case. Unfortunetly through the searching of the problem I changed things so many times that I've lost control of what i finaly was changing. My assumption was that the problem was with the height of the BOTTOM setup - just some miss-click and that give me error. But thanks again :)

as it turned out , I simply need to zero AFTER I load the g code in mach 3.. not before.. So from fusion to mach 3 to the 6040 cnc , there is some confusion , but its all worked seamlessly since I started zeroing the machine after loading gcode.

how do you set DOC on profile milling? if im profiling out of a billet, I need an infeed (Depth Of Cut ) rather than just plunging to max depth through solid material. I don't think my end mill OR VMC would like that!

Hi crozwayne Thank you for watching! There is an option for selection in the depth of cut so you can select a vertex on the screen or you can use the offset field to enter a depth

Hi Lars. I recently made my own CNC but i am struggling with one part. Which height will tell me the starting (home position) height of my cutting bit. If my feed height is 5mm and clearance along with retract is 10mm for 2D contour process then how high should i keep my bit and start my gcode?
@cadcamstuff
@cadcamstuff 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Prashant Kumar Thank you for watching! I am sorry if the video is not clear. Not sure I can do a better job than I try to do in the video. But, as you start the program, the software will read the clearance height and go there. Best, Lars

@lindsay5985

@@airgunningyup and Prashant Kumar, When you enter CAM in F360 the first thing you do is set the stock origin to the top of the stock. When you fire up your CNC you need to home it to the top of your stock; to do this you need a Z-probe.

Thanks Lars you do great vids , BUUUUUUT fusions height tabs are the rube goldberg of the machining world 99% of machinist's program from top of part as the ABS reference . I waste so much F#@$ing time with this tab I have to change to modal top every single time every tool, Oh and no user defaults ya for the values but not the ref point I HATE height tabs.

well yeah all that sheet is great but i tried diffrent methods and my Z axis cant freaking get it... as soon i hit cycle start in mach3 the Z axis its going way far upwards than the heights settings iv put in there, It have to do with this line here (g28 g 91 z0) how the fuck do i set this up T_T when i was running some tests on halftoner there was an option SafeZ that i could just set the distance that the spindle will keep when going to another task and it was doing that... unlike fusion faqin rocket sience
