Hi Lars, parametric modeling is a great feature. In extruding the bottom part you did not use a parameter for thickness. How would you do that?
@cadcamstuff7 жыл бұрын
Hi Marcel, I would use the Parameter option under the Modify drop-down. I thought that was a little too advanced for this video series. Thank you for watching the videos! Have a great day!
@finbat7 жыл бұрын
The only change I would make is when you are doing the "as built joint" is to select the bottom panel first and then the front. In this case is does not matter, but when you do other joints the order of pick is important. The first picked is the component that will "move", so in this case since the front is grounded, I would pick the bottom panel first.

At 9:35 it looks like the bottom panel isn't fitting inside the groove, but is floating next to it. So when you cut the bottom panel it wouldn't be large enough to fit the groove on all sides.
@TheMetallerik7 жыл бұрын
You are almost correct, I noticed it too. When extruding bottom pannel at 9:50, there are 2 rectangles that needs to be selected. Otherwise it wont connect to front pannel.

Thank you for all your videos. I've learned a lot. I do have a question... shouldn't the four inner edges have been projected for the bottom drawer part as opposed to the outer edge? So that the bottom drawer panel sits in the groove and doesn't fall out? Or did i miss what was being selected?

3:27 when I try to use the colinear command it flags up an error saying 'Sketch geometry is over constrained'?
@learohke77223 жыл бұрын
While I don't know if I've found The Way, I certainly have found A way. When I make the rectangle and try to apply collinear, I get the same error message as you. Looking at the points of the rectangle, I noticed that some had a dot, and an icon next to them, the "coincident" icon. Indeed, I got three icons per dot. Clicking one of the icons, and then pressing delete, I was able to remove the constraint, and -poof-, collinear worked like a charm! I still have no idea why coincident was applied, but at least I know what caused my problem. Hopefully, it's the same thing that caused your problem.
@koootzz12 жыл бұрын
Hi. A late response but I found if you draw the 2 point rectangle so that it is not touching the existing edges, I.e. smaller than the panel, you can colinear all four sides of the rectangle and that works fine.
@SimopsAus7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Lars.....excellent tutorials as always! Couple questions......for the bottom panel could you just select the inner bottom edge of each of the four grooves and use that to sketch the size of the panel and then extrude......why use projection? Also seen on some other tutorials use of the Epsilon command for parametric dimensioning of parts......is this just another method or am I off the mark here? Cheers
@cadcamstuff7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking the time to watch the video. Hmm, not sure if you could bypass the project command for the bottom. Would be could if you could. I have to test that out :-) I am not sure what Epsilon is? Best, Lars

Having the same problem as below. I'm using the free 30-day version and when I go to use the colinear tool to create the dado on the right panel I can not select the small line segment in the adjoining face board. I have to create the dado cut and then use P to project onto the other side. Then I can use the colinear tool. Glad I saw the posts after 2 days and 4 different recreations :)

I am honestly not sure exactly what is going on. It has nothing to do with the software version because trial and paid version are the same.

Hi Lars, Thanks for responding. I noticed other users below having the same issue. I event started the entire tutorial over thinking I missed a step like grounding a piece or not connecting properly. Every component is black ( fully defined). I can select other segments "through" the design but not the segments that are the notch. As others below said I could use the "P" command and project over to the other side then "cut it out," but then I still have issues making the pieces colinear. Maybe there is a version difference? Love the series. It's been immensely helpful and yes at times frustrating :) Please keep the series going! Rob

Amazing tutorials as always! I have a question... Why does it matter if a component can "fly" around the scene? Wouldn't that be actually good in case you need to quickly change components position?
@kodiak2fitty5 жыл бұрын
In this case, we know we want the pieces of the drawer to remain together; yes there are other cases where you want components to freely move. If the boards weren't constrained in the real world by dovetails, glue or screws, it would fall apart. Lars covers joint in other videos where you can, for example, spin or slide 2 components with respect to each other.

Hi Lars, Great tutorials, but i'm having a problem with the bottom panel. After projecting the lines around the back edge of the slots when i Press/Pull the bottom panel the part that would locate in the front panel slot is missing. Seems when i select the bottom for the Press/Pull i have to select two parts, the main panel plus the part that would locate in the front slot. You seem to grab the whole panel in the video. Best practice would have been to offset the four corners of the projected rectangle by a few thou inward to allow for changes in humidity that would cause that bottom panel to expand and shrink. If it expands it will press the edges apart, or warp the bottom.

Hi Lars, got another question here...I keep having the problem where it won't allow me to select the faces as you are doing. For example, when I try to do the Project command to generate the bottom (8:54) it's not letting me select the bottom face of the dado- the highlight jumps from the back of the groove to the inside face of the drawer front panel (under where the bottom will be). It just skips over the bottom face of the dado.

I just created another sketch and replicated the problem we have been having with the collinear command. Lars, Love your videos, you do an excellent job of teaching 3D modeling the "proper" way which makes life so much easier. Question: Would it be possible to model something similar to this video using pre-existing (semi-complex) components instead of modeling every piece? My goal is to model a full CNC/3D printer/Laser Cutter/whatever frame out of aluminum 2020 extrusions from McMaster (part # 5537T514). Starting simply: If possible, how would you go about modeling a box that is parametrically driven like in this video here where changing one or two dimensions would effect the constrained other components where you might normally use and extrude to control the length instead of a normal sketch dimension? Thank you and keep up the videos, they are very useful! -Eric P.S.I'm not sure I was clear so let me know if I should clarify my question.
@cadcamstuff7 жыл бұрын
Hi Eric, Thank you for taking the time to watch the videos! It can be done with some limits. First of, when you have an assembly, you can control component locations with joints. It might start to get harder if you import a screw from McMaster and then you want to change the length via the Parameters list. You might be able to cheat by making a rectangular side view box that cuts the length of the the screw and then drive that box length via the parameter table. btw. the parameter table I'm talking about can be found at the bottom of the modify drop-down. So I think my final answer is that it could be done, but I might in-vision some parametric headaches could occur :-)....Proof me wrong!!! I will be rooting for you!!! Hope this is helpful.
@eda731947 жыл бұрын
That's actually exactly the issue I had the first time I tried doing this, I changed one length and had to correct several errors. It worked but took me 15 minutes every time which defeated the purpose. I'll try using that trick of driving the length via boxes instead of using the parts directly. Thanks again, it was extremely helpful!

Hello Lars, Your tutorial series are really helping me mastering Fusion360 but I'm stuck. When I try to do the colinear selection for the bottom slot, I can't select the horizontal surfaces of the front panel. I select the horizontal line that I've just made on the right panel, clicked on colinear, and if I try to select the top surface ouf the front panel, I receive the message "Select other geometry". Try as I might, just can't get past this step. And if I do, the model don't become parametric. I tried, and learned and now know this step is really important to master. Thanks in advance and keep up the good works!
