I started listening to to trance & dance music in (give or take) 2001, which quickly evolved into hardtrance and shortly after hardcore/ hardstyle for me. I've been listening to the genre for a good 6 or 7 years now, and while I appreciate both the 'light' and 'dark' side of hardcore, my preference now goes towards the lighter, happier form. It brings back memories of happy hardcore and rave, and I don't mind the fact that it commercializes. Just means more people will listen to, and love it.
