Another great thing about it was how it's one of the few times a Leela-centric episode addressed her growing feelings for Fry. Most of early Futurama was about Fry's schoolboy crush on her, with her either ignoring or being receptive of his advances, only for something to ruin the mood. Then there's this episode, and Leela's actions show just how deeply attached she's become to Fry, even though it's long before the pair actually took their relationship seriously.

The worse thing about Futurama is that it lulls you into a false sense of security with its comedy, then beats you over the head with feels when you least expect it. Its also the best thing about Futurama. These episodes are an "odd man out" so to speak and it makes it that much more sincere when a show like this does drop an episode that hits you in the feels.

And it doesn't always have to be a cop out. I always hate it when they use this cliche as way to resolve everything. They have no explanation of what happened or how it happened. Nor do they know a way to resolve it. It's basically a "Get out of jail free" Card. Also sometimes adding an "....or was it?" twist can raise more questions. Sometimes, it works. Sometimes, it doesn't. Now, sometimes the cliche can work if it's used to teach the main characters a lesson. For example, in the 80s TMNT episode "Shredderville", after Shredder got away again, the Turtles were fed up with all of it wished that they were never mutated to begin with. They fell asleep and woke up to find their lair in shambles and NYC under Shredder's control because they were never mutated. After all the chaos ensued, they woke up again only to find everything back to normal. And this nightmare taught them a lesson to think twice before wishing they were never mutated.

There’s a Darth Vader comic that shows this pretty well, where it shows him overthrowing Palpatine and going to Obi-Wan for forgiveness before revealing it was just a force vision of his. It works because you obviously know that it’s not real beforehand so it’s not just a cop-out, but also that Darth Vader is strong enough to do so and the only thing stopping him is Palpatine’s influence over him.

The only good 'it was all a dream' plot. I think pointing out that wanting to have somebody stay by her side is a really important here since it's a central aspect of the Fry--Leela dynamic. Leela having been an orphan and having nobody else (at least early on) is an important part of her character development, and seeing Fry stay with her through that (toward the end of the series' initial run) feels like an important end to that arc.

They managed to perfectly balance the sadness with a few minor, silly jokes lightening the tone. I think the reason people don't consider this episode as emotional as Jurassic Bark is because the writers chose (correctly, in my opinion) to not go all in on the drama, otherwise it might've been too intense. - Starting the ending scene with Bender's sassy "You've killed Fry." - "I've tried, bed sores hurt!" - Fry's surprised face when he realizes Leela is awake - "Vroom, vroom!" - "Like a parrot of the sea, he was!" And when we were all already bawling our eyes out, the "You could really use a shower" dialogue. Truly masterful screenwriting.

This episode is amazing because of the genuine way it portrays grief. Not only does Leela touch on the 5 stages of grief, we are shown the mourning process from a more functional point of view. When you lose someone you’re close to, living life without them feels surreal. You question if it really happened, and vivid dreams of them being alive again are very common. Not much is worse than that moment when you wake up and realize it was just a dream and they’re gone for good. You question your sanity and long to go back to dreaming of them. You wish life without them was a dream and that you could wake up ‘for real’. This episode is one of the few instances of media illustrating this situation, and it does it so well. It gives us the happy ending that we unfortunately don’t get in real life, and it’s one of the most beautiful endings a story can have: one of extreme relief, joy, and pure love.

Love this. For him to stay, knowing she might never wake up...for him tò beg for her to.wake up...to comfort her for two weeks...love it. Not only did he comfort her, he got her a gift, gave her his jacket, spoke to her...it was like he was telling her she would be okay at first. In the end, he was desperate. Like he knew it was getting worse. My theory is at first he was like "It's fine, I'll be here until she wakes, won't take more than a few days at most, maybe hours." As the episode progressed, he realized things weren't as good as he thought. He thought a gift would help, a jacket so she had something familiar to wake up to, and his voice to bring her back. That was all she'd need, until two weeks went by. He grew desperate. He pleaded for her to wake up. As she was waking, how he looked...he knew there was a bigger chance of her never waking again. For that split second, he was the most serious. Because he nearly lost the woman he loved. I think, had Leela passed, he would have mentally lost it.

One running gag throughout the series, and played with in the episode "Farewell to Arms," is Fry trying to do noble acts of heroism to save people, mostly Leela, but ends up causing more trouble, which was also the case here; if Fry hadn't tried to protect Leela from the wasp, she would've gotten impaled and would need immediate medical help, but she wouldn't have ended up in a venom-induced coma. Then again, there's no way Fry could've known that beforehand, and perhaps he stayed by her side, not just out of concern, but also guilt for letting her get stung.

Whooooooooo finally had my favorite episode covered. This episode is the episode I always point to when people ask why I love futurama so much. It tells this story so beautifully, and supposedly it was going to be the final episode of futurama. They switched it around with devil's hands are idle playthings cause they wanted to end on a more feel good note. But regardless you can tell that this is where the writing for futurama was at its peak

I loved watching Futurama as I grew up, and remembering this episode brought me to tears again(damn you). This may be the best TV show ever made for all of the details they manage to fit in to their story telling.

I first saw this episode when I was like 8 by (like I assume most kids) sneaking out after bedtime and watching on adult swim. This is probably my favorite episode of the series because of how much I was shocked by it and how much it made me feel.

this is one of my favorite episodes, it's good because you know that it's all going to end up ok because they can't possibly kill off Fry like that, but the twist is still amazing in the end. It is also one of the episodes that truly dives deep into the love that Fry and Leela share

This episode was child-me's equivalent of an acid trip. My mind was so blown watching this as a kid. It did something to me that no other episode of a TV show had ever done. I was confused, scared, ecstatic, sad, sentimental, mystified, and totally disillusioned.

This is an excellent episode, and it kept me guessing. It's only my longtime fandom of sci-fi made me suspect that nothing was real, and even then I didn't guess the ending. And yeah. This is one of the best uses of the "It was all just a dream."

This episode is heartfelt and is the trippy. The first time I saw it, I was 14, and had to stay up 24 hours just so I could go to the hospital to have an EEG test after having two unexplained seizures. So, I marathon Adult Swim all night, and it was getting harder not to fall asleep since that would defeat the purpose of the test the doctors wanted. This episode came on at around 3:30-ish maybe 4 in the morning, when I was basically sleep deprived, and had two more hours or so before having to go to the hospital, and then the coffin scene happened, and my mom was worried that scene would trigger another seizure and ordered me to close my eyes until it was over, and I almost fell asleep right there on her.

8:45 what's interesting is that, if you have a keen eye and a sharp wit, you'd be able too see the red herring coming. Its explained that fry falling into the honey and the honey spilling onto the couch is what remade him, but if you paid attention, you would have noticed that fry was in a space suit when he fell in. Genes wouldnt make it through that at all.

"I'm going to guess it has something to do with the cereal..." You got it. Back in the 80s and 90s when there was Saturday Morning Cartoons, ads for sugary cereals were EVERYWHERE on TV. And "Honeycomb big! Ya Ya Ya! It's not small! No no no!" was the catch phrase of that cereal.

I always felt this episode was great, but it hit even harder when I watched it after my wy wife's stroke. I was there by her side every day, talking to her, singing to her etc. while she was in a medically induced coma. With her mind going from the bleeds and all the surgery they had to do, it made me think "did she hear me?" and "what was going through her mind the entire time?" she did pull through (it was touch and go for a while) but has aphasia (has trouble finding the right words/communicating), so even if she somehow remembered anything furing the coma, it's not like she'd be able to say.

One thing that is iverlooked or just kinda not noticed is that when IT happened. Bender would have been the only one awake on the ship, fry has the stinger in him and Leela would be totally fine (not fine at all she would have passed out) So that means, bender had to get rid of the bee and fly the ship back to Earth as quickly as possible thinking his friends were going to die.

i swear one of these days you and Johnny are gonna get into a collab (hopefully) and I look forward to when/if it comes. that aside, this was a good pick Shady, I remember this episode being such a mind trip because you couldn't tell what was actually happening versus what was a dream and by the time I got to the end I was thankful out of relief of knowing things were going to be okay. P.S. I subscribe to both of you and when you uploaded your video I honestly thought it was Johnny doing a video on the episode until I saw your name. so don't put your thumbnails down dude, you both do a great job

There's an interesting throwaway line after the first dream sequence with a Fry. Leela says something along the line "I know that Fry is real, my own subconsciousness never treated me so well". And throughout the episode, everyone, other then a Fry, is rather disrespectful towards Leela, constantly doubting her and giving backhand compliments. Aside from being a fuel for comedic moments, it also characterizes Leela as someone with a deep rooted insecurity issues, that constantly pushes her to prove herself, explaining her motivation behind "reverse psychology" bit at the beginning. What a fantastic writing to get all of that through one line of dialogue.
