Part of the reason I know that Yancy loved his brother is the wife's line. "I know what name you want to give him, Yancy. It's okay." It implies that Yancy talked about Fry so much and with such emotion that his wife also agreed to name their child after him. That says a lot.

I felt this episode heavily. Feeling like someone you care about took the path you wanted to take in your life and holding resentment, towards them for feeling left behind and feeling like you’ve failed yourself, even if overall, you’re a generally upbeat person. Futurama was great at randomly humanizing most characters, from a light hearted, walked upon, impoverished Decapodian, to a billionaire villainous tycoon.
@LauraGrrrr53704 жыл бұрын
Part of the impact of this episode for me was that Fry has so few regrets about leaving his old life behind, it's easy to forget that he had a family who never knew what happened to him. For decades and decades there was a hole in this family, this brother who disappeared on New Year's Eve 1999 and the case went cold (heh) immediately. I know people don't like the retcons in Bender's Big Score, but I do because at least in that universe Fry's family got some kind of closure. And Yancy still named his son Philip. He did love him all along, disappearance or no.

@@RJLiams Also from what I remember the show didn't frame it as Fry only having bad memories of him they framed those memories as backstory not flashbacks which is important. Those glimpses into the past may not have been all that those two had of each other and just like many sibling relationships they have their ups and downs. Fry focuses on the negatives when he talks because the clover connected his feelings of resentment for those times Yancy was jealous of him just like most people who get annoyed by somebody they'll only focus on the negative at the time. It couldn't have been all bad between them because it's evidenced that even though they bickered they still hung out with one another despite the rivalry. I know siblings that won't even acknowledge that the other one exists let alone still find the time to be near each other.

I've watched this over and over and over again when it was on Netflix and just now realized Yancey broke the tradition of naming the first born sons Yancey. Edit: it seems to have been a tradition but Enos (Fry's grandfather) seems to have been skipped for some reason. Thanks canaris4 Yes Enos is implied to be the paternal grandfather not maternal (Fry's mother's father) though it would make more sense. Possible reasons for this: the writers forgot. But it they are in the clear because Yancy Sr said that his grandfather was the Yancy not his father. They meant for Enos to be the maternal grandfather and messed up. Enos was the second born and for reasons unknown it was left to him to carry on the name with his children.

Idk I still find that dog one sadder. Seymore doesn't really ever get the concept that he's not coming back, he just waits for him until the day he himself dies. He only had that 1 nice person come into his otherwise sad life, and then he just one day never showed up again. At least his brother understood that he was missing and very very likely eventually came to the conclusion that he was just dead and wasn't coming back. The dog was just alone and really believed he'd be back.

I could only ever watch Futurama when I stayed at my grandparents house where they didn't monitor what I was watching on TV, and somehow Jurassic Bark never happened to air when I could watch, so this episode was the one that had the biggest impact on me. At the end of the day, this one still means more to me than Jurassic Bark.

i could only watch futurama on the sunday nights that the nfl, mlb and nascar decided not to ruin my life by running long....and that's what really happened to futurama the first time. btw, in that respect this is like the best year ever, no olympics even, but alas, it's too late to matter. not like sports can preempt youtube

10:54 The delivery, the music, everything about those couple of seconds brings a lump to my throat. And if you watch the series in its entirety, you realise that all of the people who truely loved Fri, missed him, and were waiting for him to come home. This is seen most prominantly with Seymor, but you ralize his Mom, his Dad, his Brother, and his dog, the four individulas closest to him which Fri believed didn't care about him loved him and wanted the best for him and for him to come home. Heartbreakingly beautiful.

I'm just glad Shady's covering Futurama now. It's such a great show and I don't think Bojack could have happened without it.

Futurama was such a trail blazer. Before it, there haven't really been animated shows this side of the pond that would combine comedy with raw emotion to this degree of skill and fearlessness, hell, not even golden age Simpsons at it's most dramatic was willing to throw a gut punch like Fryrish or Jurassic Bark; and right after Futurama's first ending, we began seeing more and more shows (specially comedic) both for kids and adults more willing to engage it's audience emotionally as Futurama did like Adventure Time, Regular Show, Steven Universe Rick and Morty and yes, Bojack Horseman. Even more with the rise of binging and heavy continuity.

One of my favorite episodes where I get emotional is Time Keeps On Slippin' where Fry literally moves the stars themselves to finally win Leela's love, but they lost the memory of how it all. Then Fry see's his message, the thing that could win her over again, only to have it implode before she can see it. I think this was a turning point to me where his love became less pathetic and kinda creepy, because you know there is a chance that Leela could love him back.

This has always been one of my favorite shows from Futurama. What I truly liked was how you were up front about how much Futurama you had watched before making this. Actually watching the show vs just having a script comes across wonderfully to me. Thank you. from a long time Futurama fan

The first episode made is think that Fry’s family was horrible, but they actually cared about him, Fry was just having an really awful day, Yancy was probably the one who felt the most guilt for not being nice to his brother when he needed it.

I love and appreciate your acknowledgement of the simplicity of Fry's person at the end of the day. He gave up what he wanted for the person he found most valuable, even acknowledging episode 2 how Fry gave up his dream apartment so Bender could keep his antenna. He's a sincerely good guy just distracted. Also you see Fry consistently getting with other women so it's not like we can really call him a loser by any means.

Benders Big Score has a really great story and emotional moments it’s up there as one of if not my favorite thing to come out of this series. Also this is gonna sound weird but Stench and Stenchibility also had a really sweet story and ending I recommend checking it out if you haven’t.

This is what i needed right now! No-one talks about Futurama enough! Near the end there I think you really captured why so many of us love the show, Fry is a good person, the kind of person we can relate to on a human level, the kind of person you would want as a friend, not many cartoons have a protagonist like that.

This is my favorite Futurama episode. It made me break down, because it helped me to finally get over my childhood hatred for my own brother. Made me finally reflect on things more as an adult, and realize he was not so bad. Made me remember the good things over the bad. This episode is literally the reason I can now speak with my brother and be happy with him, and I was able to release that childish hatred.

Shady, I have to say this because it is important: Parental neglect is a sort of abuse. It is important to emphasise that abuse is more than just being physically violent or calling someone names and threatening them. Neglecting your child is abusing them. So, yes, Fry's parents were abusive+neglectful with him in a number of times. I know we are more used to "clearer" sorts of parental abuse (like in Bojack Horseman, with Bojack's parents and Diane's family) but dismissing abuse that is... Less blantat (not sure if that's the right wording, but I think you know what I mean) is very harmful, especially for people who have been through such experiences. I love the channel, this is a great analysis of the episode, but I really thought this should ve highlighted.
