Future Driven Forum: Leveraging Advances in In-Vehicle Technology to Mitigate Driver Distraction

Each year, more than 3,000 people die on U.S. roads as a result of distracted driving, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). However, a February 2023 naturalistic driving analysis from NHTSA indicated that distraction-related fatality numbers were likely under reported and that the actual annual fatalities are likely more than 10,000.
In 2006, the Automotive industry developed a set of voluntary driver distraction guidelines to combat this continued problem. NHTSA went further in their 2013 driver distraction guidelines focused on in-vehicle electronic devices, however stopped short of finalizing guidelines focused on portable aftermarket devices and auditory-vocal distractions. Since then, significant advancements have been made in in-vehicle technologies that have the potential to play an important role in addressing driver distraction.
This webinar will seek to update viewers on what technological advancements have been made over the past decade, how those technologies can be leveraged to support the driver’s attention in an increasingly complex driving environment, and what format those solutions might look like in the context of the U.S. regulatory environment.
