I totally understand where you're coming from. This video is addictive. His dance moves are something beyond this world. I hope you're doing well in Mexico.

One of the most iconic TV performances ever, imo. That rare kind of moment that crashes through the layers of distance and removal that characterize passive consumption of content and forces the viewer/consumer to become a fellow human witnessing another human feeling something and pleads that feeling be shared. They were already established and rising by the time of Singles, but this appearance (and Letterman's subsequent meming/replaying of Herring's dancing on ensuing broadcasts) gave them a seismic boost in the indie realm that, I think, made their career into something totally else. It still comes up in interviews years later. I personally remember people talking about this afterwards at a point when late night tv appearances generally meant very little, but the infectious, strange, and strangely touching nature of it just HIT people like few things like that do. And if you haven't seen it, their performance of Light House on Austin City Limits is nearly as impeccable and moving.

Thanks for the suggestion for ACL. Joseph Campbell once said, famously, that he doesn't think people are looking for the meaning of life, but rather a feeling of being alive. I think the singer here embodies that...if that makes sense.

@@wallbangerreactions Love that. All about the heart, not the head. Very applicable quote. Another being that classic line from Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, who once said something like 'people go to a concert to watch someone believe in themselves for an hour,' and that certainly also applies here for sure.

the band badbadnotgood has a fantastic rendition of this song, definitely check that one out, too (link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIjce3iegq15mq8). the lead singer of future islands (samuel t. herring) also contributes to another badbadnotgood song, "time moves slow", which is one of my favorites!

I love how you say you have seen it before. I can't stand these reaction people that claim they haven't heard of Elvis or the Beatles. So false
