All this technology is great, however when you can't even get a dwg. drawing in national grid and correctly orientated or better still a pdf with the coordinates N, E and with the decimal point in the wrong place what hope do we have.

I’ve been a freelance site engineer for 10 years now and to be honest I can’t see myself lasting in it for another 10, the industry has was too much negativity associated with it. I can see that there’s a lot of new technology that we have at our disposal now but at the end of the day, the only one that most companies are actually using is machine control just because it is actually useful, but as a freelance engineer why should I spend my own money for the training and software that I might use once on a job and then not have any use for it for 2 years until the next job comes around? Not only that I could go do a simple RC Frame job for 270-300 a day and only require CAD and a PDF viewer, or I could do an earthworks job where I require LSS, N4ce CAD, Civil3D and whatever else for £270 - £300 a day still. It just doesn’t add up 7:30 to 5:30 as an absolute minimum on every single job that you go to, no matter where it is or how long it takes you to get there. Not only that but try getting work that is consistently local to home because if you drop unlucky and there’s no local work you’re paying £200 a week out of your own pocket for hotels. The pay is better nowadays, but rates were absolutely stagnant for at least a decade and only in the last year have they creeped up by £20 - £30 a day, Old grumpy foremen, snide PMs and CMs that do everything in their power to shaft you of your hard earned wages as well. Turned up 5 minutes late once? Dock him half an hour but we won’t do anything the other 4 days a week when he’s there 15 minutes early and dropped his plans on Saturday because they were desperate you to come in. In fact only the other week I started a job, worked Monday, had Tuesday and Wednesday off because I was genuinely ill. Went to site on Thursday still I’ll, but well enough to work and was told not to come back again which I felt was pretty bad and then I asked for my timesheet to be signed for the Monday and the PM and Foreman looked at me and told me “Fuck off, I’m not signing anything”. Anyway I went to ACAS and I’m putting in a CCJ against them which I will win, the funny thing is they could have paid me my wages of £300 for the day but now it is going to cost them minimum £1000 to appoint a solicitor, £300 for the solicitor to appear in court, Court costs and I’m also still going to get my wages at the end of it as well as damages as their actions left me unable to pay bills all because his head was so far up his own arse that he thought he was above the law. Imagine if someone didn’t have the knowledge to do that and what they would do instead of doing what I did. It’s no wonder that construction employs 9% of the workforce but accounts for 27% of suicides in this country, the biggest proportion of the 27% is plant ops and I’m sure I don’t have to explain myself why to you as I’m sure you see how they get treated, especially if they’re an agency driver Idk why I went on this tangent but you absolutely can not ignore the fact that there is something fundamentally wrong with the industry and with everything I’ve just said it is no wonder that people aren’t coming in to the industry, or they don’t stay in it

I’m sorry you’ve had to deal with issues like this. Don’t get me wrong I have similar experiences, and it took me a while to find the right clients. Clients that appreciate me and my services and who are willing to pay a premium. I think it’s hard for freelancers starting out too, but slowly I think as we are becoming a minority, folks are starting to appreciate us. I hope it gets a bit better for you.

Hi, great channel! Really unique for UK. Quite strangely I would say for such a vast and interesting domain, so thank you for all the advise given over the years :). I am a land surveyer but I didn't practice here or in 10 years so I am looking for a complete course, theoretical and practical(as much as it's possible) within UK borders in regards to site engineering and I remember you mentioned a course you did that took 2 weeks. Is that still available? If yes can you send a link please, I don't think it was mentioned specificaly. Thanks!
