That's a lot of work for me.... Old house, shallow metal boxes to stuff all that wiring into. I'd need to chisel out the old clinker block a bit deeper to fit a deeper box! Grrrrr! Great video. Well explained. Thanks.

I was always taught to take feeds to switches, I've being doing it since an apprentice. Also 3 core to lights is very useful, allows for various switching alternatives, if downlighters were installed etc.

Another great video. Would love to see a video on wiring up a changeover switch for a Generator for a house. Many thanks.

I realy love this idea and such a great way of getting ur neutrals connected neatly . BUT what worry me is people using blue black wires for switching but not putting sleeves on and at a glance u presume they are neutrals

@GSH Electrical I suppose it depends.. What the client wants, cost, time, and practicalities. Would there be enough room in a typical down lighter fittings to aconadate the permanent line conductor? Your example showed a ceiling rose to accommodate the extra feed cable to extend the lighting curcuit. But I guess a junction box would be needed if you were extending off down lighters?

I've been future proofing since 2000. I've never liked three plating due to fancy light fittings only having room enough for three wires (switch line, neutral and CPC). I've been in the industry since 1988 and all colleges used to teach was three plating for domestic lighting.

Interestingly, all the 1980s houses on my estate were wired like this on the ground floors - they were ahead of their time!

@GSH Electrical I actually think there's a lot to be said for the old 'Octopus Wiring Systems' way of doing lights - makes it very easy to add, remove or modify how fixtures are wired

Traditional 2 plate and 3 plate wiring avoided running neutrals through switches as there were no BS approved connectors you could joint them with hence it was considered bad practice when I did my “tech” 35 years ago 😮

Do you have to put the neutrals in the loop hole or can you still have them in connectors in the back box but connect the remaining wires instead to L1 and Com only?

I'm not a spark but I am a builder who did electrical installation at college some years ago. I do most of our electrical work and have it tested after completion. Can I ask why you doubled over the ends of the neutrals when you put two conductors into the same terminal please?

I dislike placing the neutral at the switch… but nowadays it’s becoming a necessity because of wifi lighting controls.

@@GSHElectrical Mainly thee extra cables, come across many situations clients wanting dimmers installed and just not enough room in the back box. Now this is going back some years, now a non issue with the deeper boxes now used. 20mm deep has become a rarity now with 25mm being the go to. Suppose i should have said i did dislike!

Sonnoff are now making WiFi smart switch modules (that fit inside a 25mm back box) that do not require a neutral. They are very reasonable in cost. They require a bridge module but no biggy. Can retrofit in current configuration.

@@GSHElectrical No but have used sonoff and they work okay. Although might not be popular in some commercial places due to the Chinese app you need to install. Work with Alexa, Google etc though.

One thought is that future systems maybe be POE for switches/smart equipment and not be mains connected other than to the Poe switch(different kind of switch ;) )

I’m not sure that I like the idea or the neutral going in the back of the switch. The DIY people will just pull the switch off and replace it with a 2 way and bang. Same as when they charge a ceiling rose they just connect the lives together and the neutral together simply discarding the brown sleeving on the switch live . In the old days it was always bad practice to have a neutral at the switch something we would never do . Unlike today
