As someone that studied Artificial Intelligence in 2019 and restudied now I can assure you that Generative Ai is just a magic trick, it gives you the illusion that does something. Ai algorythm are really, like REALLY, good at recognize pattern in data. They were created for data analysis. Ai takes a lot of datas and tries to find some pattern in it, STOP. I can't forget my professor's words "Ai is just a fancy way to do average on datas based on different parameters. And is funny that Ai is garbage at doing average between numbers" The generative Ai now is just an extension of what the pattern recognition did, with more layers. With GPT for example OpenAi uses an Ai to recognize your text, converts it into weights (is like a huge array of numbers) and finds the words that on average are more similar to the responses USUALLY the training data contains. For example if I have the text "What's the best food to put on pizza?" the Ai convert your text into weights and finds in its dataset something similar. If, for example, the Ai has 10 answers to that question and 9 said "Pepperoni" and 1 "Glue" (cause someone was joking) the Ai usually gives you the answer "pepperoni" but can also with 10% probability tell you "glue". For this reason Ai is not reliable because of course data could be "poisoned" by sarcasm and jokes that Ai can't IN ANY WAY comprehend. You can have a 80-90% precision Ai at best because of this. Data must be clear and categorized by humans to give a meaningfull result and it takes a lot of time Of course if you add generated data in the model the precision decreases because Ai generated contend is at the start faulted. And this is what happening right now with Chat GPT, Gemini and so on. And don't let me start on the overfitting of the model. Ai is just smoke in the eyes. Companies are already facing trouble of laying of people changing them for Ai and now they don't have the humans to fix Ai errors. And a lot of small Ai companies are closing because costs are huge and the benefit is negligible. The best Ai (the ones we will use in the future) were already here years before ChatGPT: google translate, Nvidia DLSS, After effects rotobrush, all the system of face recognition, taht was all Ai but no one made so much noise telling that. Remember: Ai is really good at recognize and will be used for that, for creating is mathematically imperfect, better pay a human.

Your point about the jokes and sarcasm rings so true. For my undergrad machine learning class I tried to train a classifier to see if it was able to tell apart headlines from The Onion articles vs The New York Times. It did pretty well at classifying what looked to be incredibly comical and incredibly factual, but when the onion began to satirize the, at the time current, Trump administration, it quickly became unable to tell apart what was just The Onion joking and the New York Times actually reporting on the presidency. I wrote a report about it for my project and this experience has kind of stuck with me ever since.

Humans are a magic trick. They give you the illusion of doing something. Neurons are really, like REALLY, good at recognizing patterns in data. They survived by analyzing patterns in their environment. Neurons take in a lot of data to find a pattern in them, STOP. I think what you're ignoring is the impact of scale on neurons or parameters. If you put a brain with an equal number of neurons and synapses as models have nodes and parameters into a human sized body, you definitely do not get human levels of capability (keep in mind language models are significantly smaller than the human brain), and we've shown that a lot of patterns we see in AI models (ie: convolutional networks) also exist in the human brain in various capacities (though obviously not all of them). What I see in AI is a lot of emergent behaviors that we don't necessarily expect to be in the model as they weren't explicitly trained for certain things, and yet end up doing them anyway. Inductive reasoning (ie: Chain of Thought, etc) wasn't really a trained element in models, especially early ones, and yet it worked surprisingly well because the models built internal representations that happened to lend themselves to that task and style of prompting. Now, I'm not saying that existing models are self-aware on the level of humans (though I certainly propose Claude 3.5 sonnet seems to be aware of its existence as a language model) as is, but I do think that we've shown a lot of capabilities and neural structures in the trained weights of these models which does suggest they are at least capable of certain types of reasoning, and certain types of "thoughts" to at least a limited degree. The reason you're so confident of human capabilities is because you are human, and have wrapped your worldview around it. As someone that regularly trains AI models and keeps on top of all the latest research (keep in mind, in 2019 it was a *very* different landscape), I think there's a lot more going on in these models than this extremely pessimistic and reductive take would suggest. I also think that you're ignoring the impact of a lot of auxiliary systems built around AI models, like advanced prompting, agentic workflows, tool use, scratch pads, tree search, etc. Just examining their output as, say, a chatbot, isn't really indicative of their capabilities any more than directly scanning somebody's brain for their gut reaction to a question would be. In reality, humans are able to model answers to outputs in a latent "scratchpad" (we think in our head before answering) but we expect to essentially see into a model's imagination (by immediately taking the first output they give us), and we hold AI models to a much higher standard than we hold ourselves. You are absolutely correct that there are people overstating the capabilities of the models we have, though, and they almost certainly don't "experience" things in the way we do yet. However, I don't think it's crazy to suggest that they have at least some latent representation of the world, and we've seen research and visualizations to suggest as such.

Speaking as a disabled and chronically ill person, none of the things listed in that article need AI to be made and of the things where AI would be integral (describing facial expressions to blind people) it's so far from what a disabled person would actually find useful that it's borderline offensive. It's like when proponents of generated images were arguing that disabled people could use it to make art, when many artists are disabled and can make art just fine without it. What we want is to be listened to, not be told what our needs are or to imply that what we want is to be like able-bodied people. But no one considers our needs even when we state them expressly. Passing someone your credit/debit card is illegal (at least in EU) so even now that person has to pay with their own money and then get it back from the person who asked them to buy something. Sure the disabled person can still give them cash, but realistically almost everyone uses cards anyway. So payment via your face is not something that creates any new issues here in that sense. Getting rid of the cash is the issue, but even without the facial payments there are some people that wants to remove cash (for better security/fraud detection and so on). Sure facial payment has a lot of its own issues (I'm more than happy with my actual payment method with Google Pay via NFC in my phone and don't wanna change it), but the argument you provided here is not one of them.

AI has already taken the jobs I was promised when I started college. One of the recruiters told me that the jobs they offered in in my freshman year don’t exist anymore since it was cheaper to hire on IT guy to maintain the AI to do the jobs that you used to get out of college. Hell, I had to convince the bosses at my current job not to continue development on an AI that would have replaced me by showing them the errors the AI makes.

If I had the chance to express what would go wrong if they replaced peoples' jobs with AI, I would take it in a heartbeat. The cycle repeats. They're going to find the jobs that they replaced people with AI are going to not be done as well, nor are going to be done to the standards expected over the long haul. Every few years the next big thing comes along and companies think they can let go of customer service agents, salespeople, programmers, etc. Documentation? Still has to be written by a human being the first time. I work for a small software company, and if I asked ChatGPT to write my software documentation for me, it'd start hallucinating within three sentences because our software is closed sourced and has a small user footprint.... so the only documentation that already exists is what I wrote!

The galling thing is that it doesnt really work, at least not as advertised. They already tried the facial recognition thing for shops and it failed, theyve been trying self driving for years and its still really not that close to ready despite repeated lies about how far its come, go back even further and you have the massively over-hyped dictation software that still doesnt do a good job over 30 years later.* Now we have the LLMs but a large part of why they are as good as they are is because of the absurd amount of information theyve brazenly stolen, and there just plain isnt enough left to greatly improve upon what they have. (On the contrary, model collapse looms.) Its the same pattern over, and over, make a break through, explosive growth with sensational headlines and fear mongering, then slam in to a brick wall as the break through hits its limits. Rinse and repeat; This has been going on since before most of us were born. Turing himself massively overestimated how rapidly AI would develop. Thats not to say AI isnt going to change the world, it already has, and not just because of incompetent managers sacking everyone they can to replace them with wholly insufficient technology... In reality its more behind the scenes and frankly insidious. It runs our searches, our social media, when people refer to 'the algorithm' thats AI, it governs much of what you see and hear online, (and usually does as bad a job of it as every other use of AI.) The likes of Facebook already proved it can even manipulate our emotions, without oversight or consequence for doing so. Should have been regulated decades ago, but nobody in charge understands any of this or they just plain dont care as long as lobbyists are filling their wallets, so we have to put up with corporate giants running societal experiments on us all to increase their profit margins; The dystopian future is already in full swing, its just more tedious and annoying than the movies and books told us it would be. *You can actually draw a direct line from the technologies of dictation software right up to ChatGPT. Its a lot more iterative than people imagine. Humans are quite susceptible to being fooled by systems that are easily anthropomorphised.

The AI we are being sold isn't the AI of sci-fi. That has been rebranded as artificial general intelligence, and is still very much sci-fi. The AI we have is predictive, based on statistics. Statistics calculated from the training data it has been fed. It then works by taking the input, turning it into numbers. It then calculates the most, or one of the most, likely outputs, which is a string of numbers. Finally, it converts the numbers into words (or chunks of words), pixels in an image, or whatever. The AI doesn't understand its own output, it's just crunching numbers. Which is why hallucinations are such a hard to resolve problem. It's also why it has no problem-solving ability. It can come up with somewhat novel outputs, but can't validate them as being a potential solution or not. TLDR, AI has been massively oversold, and the robot uprising is still decades away.

That is a false way to view this. A false distinction. The AI we're seeing today, is one more huge step on the path to creating something even better than what's imagined in fictional AI stories. Most AI in fiction, always has a significant flaw or shortcoming, which we're already seeing won't be the case. There are also papers coming out now, which prove LLMs are Turing complete, and even capable of intelligent reasoning as we scale them up and improve their preprompting logic. How you're describing AI, is little more than an outdated skeptic's talking point, and does not hold up. Self improving AIs are merely a year or two away, once agent systems are configured and deployed properly. That's when things will take off. Even if LLMs didn't improve beyond what we have today, they'd still change everything about our world, over their deployment in the next few years. We are a LOT closer than you seem to think. And yes, one can even use LLMs to build a robot that works similar to how we imagine them in fiction. I've actually designed a framework to achieve that, through nothing but self prompting feedback loops, and secondary scripts to manage environment simulation, and organize context memory.

Good video, however I wanted to chime in by saying that there is another serious problem that you didn't mention here: AI-generated photorealistic images. Lately we have seen how these tools that generate images from text have progressed, allowing us to create images that are already indistinguishable from reality, some even without any filtering or censorship allowing us to create images that have the potential to flood the Internet with misinformation and drive our society into chaos. The latest developments in this area are really worrying and these tools continue to improve every day and so does the misuse of them.

I think the biggest issue with ai "art" defenders is, they don't get that creativity unlike tech, does not move in a linear line. AI as a tool that would help art "progress?" sounds very naive since art does not really progress but rather change. If I take all tech from the 60s and compare it to tech today, there would be a clear winner. the same can't be said about art. The only thing ai "art" is achieveing is filling up space with meaningless images adding to overexposure and overstimulation

I could vouch for my own ai "art" use case in a way. Previously when hiring an artist I would have to communicate with them using words, and I'm really awful at sketching. In the end this resulted in a lot of back and forth and a lot of overhead work on the artist's side of things. Nowadays I just spin up an instance of SD, generate something relatively close to what I like, move things around in Photoshop, and basically go like: "composition this, character that, details and style are all your call". The artist then does their job and it's perfectly how I wanted it from the get-go. Unfortunately, most people are cheap or distasteful enough to just call it a day at the photoshop step of this workflow, or even prior to that.

Stuff like this is the reason I have my front camera taped up. I don't need Apple scanning or using my face any more than I'm sure they still do, and certainly not to give me targeted ads. And, I just feel uneasy using my phone while knowing I can be seen constantly, even if no one specifically is watching. Having to take selfies only in the mirror or by taking off the tape every once in a while is worth it!!

I’d recommend looking into GrapheneOS. It’s a custom Android ROM that’s easy to install on only Google Pixel phones (you can buy a used one if you don’t want to give big G money). You can actually turn off your mic and cameras, as well as being an overall GREAT privacy centric phone operating system. Been using it myself for about 3-4 months, I’ve been loving it! It also doubles in De-Googling yourself and could get you out of the Apple walled garden, two in one!

Facial login tools like what you see on your phone are a bit different, they only run locally and the data is encrypted, this isn't supposed to leave your device and if it does it's exclusively for the purposes of security access on devices you've synced together. Facial payment at checkout is a whole other can of worms that ties into a server.. somewhere.. that's when it gets sketchy.

This doesn't even scratch the surface. First of all, the current AI hype is based on LLMs (Large Language Models) which - by definition - have no reasoning ability whatsoever. The best ELI5 take I've heard is "spicy autocomplete", which is *surprisingly* accurate. Despite this, many (possibly even the majority) of "AI" products are advertised as if they *can* reason. Second of all, the already existing problems around AI technology are way, *WAY* worse than what you describe. AI tech is already involved with insurance companies, having likely already made "decisions" that cost lives. Similarly, I know that at least the German government has been using "AI" to classify dialects in spoken language; a process that like all AI is extremely unreliable, yet it's used to decide whether people are given asylum or deported back to places where straight-up terrorist orgs like Daesh/IS or the Taliban are in control. AI has already been killing people for years.

On the other, the field itself arguably isn't at fault - but given how many bad actors it has, even that isn't really a valid point. I'll admit that AI _could_ be useful as a tool in medical research. Improving accessibility using AI for people with disabilities is fine by me, too, as is AI giving me more FPS in games by upscaling from a lower resolution... But, beyond that, I loathe AI. I can't count how many times I've gone online, seeking image references when doing art, only to find AI slop *_everywhere._* I don't want some shoddy approximation of what a species can be drawn like that would only pass for a casual observer, I want to see how *actual artists* render characters and species through their individual creative approach - an approach where every line, colour, lighting source, background choice, pose, and so on, is all *deliberate.* Another creative field AI is also a major threat to would be voice acting. I've seen voice actors justifiably raise issue with cretins running their highly trained voice through an AI to make it spit out rubbish the original actor would never say - or things they would have said had they been *paid for it.* We don't need creative fields being automated so we can toil away in miserable jobs. We don't need to have an AI sold to us to do all the work when a pack of pencils and a sketch book is less than $10. We DO need legislation to protect individuals and industries where the upper management would sell the kidney of their top employee for a chicken sandwich... And that's not even touching on how much energy is dumped into AI and the climate impacts associated with funneling so many resources into AI. In short: fuck AI. :3

I agree with the environmental costs of running generative and LLM's. It's quite massive(just like the internet itself btw) and people could theoretically do it cheaper. *Theoretically* Because in truth, the arts don't provide *real* value to society. It may provide soul food or inspire someone to shape reality around them, but on it's own as a product, it does *nothing* except carry a burden to society. Now, of course, as a sacred tradition, it can never be eliminated, but there's no reason as to why an AI can't replace it. It's ultimately doing the same task with a different approach. Does it lack intent and meaning? Maybe. But that's subject to the person consuming it, not the creator themselves. And quick tip, a web forum about art would probably do better than a random Google search, especially now with the "slop" filling the scene.

That said, I do staunchly disagree with your stance that "the arts don't provide *real* value to society." Part of me does question how to perceive the value of anything, but regardless of how you apply value, I'd still disagree that art doesn't provide value to society. Boiling it down to the most transactional side of things, art can be a means of people making a livelihood - skill and talent that people want to pay for to bring life to concepts. Personally, I hope to supplement my income through art in the future, but I've still been doing it for the last 12 years for free. In any case, I'd say economic activity through art poses a value to society. By putting paint to a canvas to produce visuals, ink to paper to create a story, a voice to a microphone to sing wonderful tunes, and other creative avenues, we can create things that resonate with people in so many ways. Yes, the response to a given piece of art is subjective, and not everyone will ascribe the same value to something... But I'd never go so far as to say art provides no value to society as a whole. A sweet song can soothe heartbreak, a fictional story can inspire "what if" scenarios that lead to innovations and further thought, a hand-crafted image can birth a cultural icon to reflect society, and again, much more. Art is a means of creating a snapshot of society for future generations to view, and our way of looking back in time to learn about past periods of humanity. All that has tremendous value to society, and I wouldn't want to leave creativity to an AI to generate a close approximation of what I'd like to see when I can instead get exactly what I want by making it myself, working with others, or paying others to make it for me.

There are people who change drastically after weight gain or loss, illness or surgery. My main beef is that AI will just be used to eliminate everything creative in society and force workers to only be used for menial labor because tech bros don’t believe that creatives are real jobs and they’d rather auto generate music and art. As a crocheter I am very aware of how AI is already destroying small designers by promoting products that can't be done. At least not in a way that makes it look exactly like the AI image. Well, there is a new yarn subscription service called Hooks and Needles, and it uses 100% AI generated images and reviews on their website. So many yarn-based KZbinrs are already being sponsored by that company and they will feature that yarn, the projects, and everything else on their channel. I don't think I have ever seen a yarn-based subscription company have that much of an impact on multiple types of yarn related channels. It is completely suspicious to me, especially when you take into consideration how many yarn-based subscription companies have had to shut down their websites recently.

The playing field was level -- they just chose not to invest in learning the skill. They think their ideas make them special. They also think that they're entitled to scam people with their glorified grift machines. It's really hard to argue with people who are this disconnected from reality. Stealing data using a non-profit organization, under the guise of "for education", twisting the meaning of "education" to be synonymous with machine learning, then implementing a fun trick in their ML model to employ a mechanism called "overfitting" in order to force the output to be different from a single existing image (to skirt direct plagiarism), then selling models with their datasets (containing copyrighted work) to be used for commercial purposes to REPLACE the people that were stolen from... It IS factually harmful, AI companies and its userbase are wrong -- it's not fair use, and no amount of data laundering will be enough to gaslight your victims into believing they were in the wrong.

A lot of these issues stem from the fact that we still don't have a regulatory framework for data privacy or many of the problems computers have introduced into our life. Now that AI is rolling around, those issues are even more exaggerated. It should be illegal for any company to gather any data about you without explicit consent unless said data is required to do business (in which case the data should only be stored and used the minimum amount of time required to do said business unless the customer consents otherwise). It should be illegal for them to buy, sell, or store data about you without consent. They should be required to allow anyone to request their data be deleted at any time they wish. There should be strict rules in regards to the security of data that is collected, stored, and especially sold. There needs to be serious consequences for companies that fail to meet data security standards. I could go on but these are things that should have been in place before AI became a thing. Now regulators are going to have to also write up rules regarding AI, in particular how it impacts data security (AI can scrape and compute a massive amount of data), IP (AI models are trained on other people's data), ect.

Need to make a point that the AI the medical industry use DOES NOT use the same data set nor models that OpenAI and all of the other techbro companies does. The biggest confusion aibros seems to try and justify the exploit from these companies is that medical industry uses it but ignores the big glaring issue that the model these medical companies and studies use aren't even the same as what OpenAI even do. Facial recognition for payment is not only invasive, it is also a terrible idea. Biometrics (facial recognition, fingerprint scanning) is your username, not your password! Think about it: people see your face everywhere, you leave your fingerprints lying all over the place, etc. Just as you are supposed to see usernames BUT NOT passwords. So if you can "pay with your face" you basically gave them more than just your money (also your privacy, getting your face tracked) for less security (you are not supposed to fork over cash with only a username)! Terrible proposition all over.
