That placement for GTA 5 is controversial but I agree. It's not rated very highly by me either. Just didn't care for the characters or story. I hope GTA 6 improves that and is more like GTA 4 or RDR2.

The main reason for that is because of multiple protagonists, they should have stick to just one. It easier to feel and connect to one character if you are spending hours playing as just that one single character. After a while it feels like you bonded and understand that character and wish for the best for him or she. Gta 5 was hard to band with any of the protagonists because you keep switching from character to character.

GTA IV really felt like NYC back then as did III to a degree. I was really impressed with what they were able to replicate. Columbia University, Lincoln Center, even Times Square was impressive to me. They even put an arcade in Chinatown which was the last open location of an old school arcade

I still rate GTA 4 and 5 higher because I love the stories in both, but in terms of pure gameplay, San Andreas still ranks as best in the series. You're never stuck with nothing to do, you always feel like you're progressing, the three cities are truly unique, and the pacing is spot on- the moment you get bored of a section the game will have you pull up stakes and go somewhere new.

In GTA III, when you do the Donald Love mission for Ray, he mentions pictures at a morgue party. That's a reference to cannibalism. Btw. Heartbreaking that this is at the bottom of the list but totally understandable. I still have a serious soft spot for it. I even remember the first 2 times I saw it played and being absolutely mind blown. Compared to everything after it, it definitely falls short in every aspect. That can't be denied.

Vice City Stories, The Ballad Of Gay Tony and San Andreas are my top favourite GTA games. They are bombastic, fun and I enjoyed their mechanics and amount of things to do in each one.

People love GTA 4 for a very simple reason: the story. Yeah, sure, it is barren in terms of gameplay and content, but its story and worldbuilding are undeniably the best in the series, comparable with those of the Red Dead Redemption series in terms of quality and seriousness. World feels alive, believable, and the story is somewhat credible too. It is unfortunate that they put gameplay and content before story in 5 to go with something a lot more straightforward and Hollywood-like but, you can't have everything I suppose.

13:29 - The mobile version was updated alongside Liberty City Stories last year, allowing modern phones to play both games. This was part of an update that added the ability to redeem the game if you were a GTA+ member or even a free 30-minute trial. I hope more of Rockstar's mobile catalog gets the same treatment - Bully, GTA lll, Vice City, etc. are still inaccessible on modern phone hardware, but I'm happy these two got fixed since they're one of the few places available for new players.

I find myself more drawn to the 3d universe stories and content versus the new games. They could have at least included the characters from previous, i dont think to many people will cry over voice actor changes really? Idk i like when the lore get deep and evolving instead of just kinda mentioned in passing or forgotten about. I agree with your list but I would personally switch vc and vcs. Imo vcs did almost everything right and fixed the flaws of the other 3d games like adding checkpoints in the emergency side missions and adding variety for the taxi missions. The empire building mechanics, the even more 1980s vibe than vc and it's emotional story make it one of the best gta games for me. The only reason sa wins is due to it having more because of a bigger map.

My ranking has sort of changed through the years. I have a favorite list, but also a list of what I think are the best if I had to recommend to others. If I had to rank the games today by recommendation, it would be GTA5, GTA4, GTASA, GTAVC, GTAVC Stories, GTA3. I'm only mentioning the games I played. GTA4 would consist of the complete edition that includes Ballad of Gay Tony and Lost and Damned. I think GTA5 is the best because of its innovate character switching feature and huge online game. It delivers old and new with fun heist missions that you can replay along with stranger missions. I also feel the ending of the game is most satisfying. GTA4 has the best character and story in the most grounded GTA game. You feel like you are in the underworld and dealing with violent gangs. SA beats VC because of its size and improved gameplay. I like Tommy better, but exploring in SA is much more fun especially with the jetpack. VC used to be my favorite because of the 80's vibe, but once the nostalgia wore off. Its flaws reveal itself. The gameplay is janky and the way you have to unlock the final mission is a pain having to do those side missions. VC Stories improves on that, but sadly is only on PS2 and Vita.

To me going from the more Gritty and Grounded story of GTA 4. GTA5 felt too silly in all aspects tbh. It’s like they decided to try and be too satirical of the LA lifestyle that the game itself became a big joke that I couldn’t really take seriously. I remember the feeling of seeing Big Smoke and Rider betray CJ. Or being conflicted and sad by the outcome of the GTA 4 choices and even really feeling for Niko and Roman throughout the story. Never had those feelings in GTA 5.

I played V first, I have dozens of thousands of hours on it, I played GTA IV only after playing V for like 6 years straight, and IV is so much better in literally every aspect. I was wondering to myself when playing IV: “damn, going from IV to V was genuinely a downgrade”, and that’s true cause IVs more realistic, and the story is mature and not some bland comedy.

It took me 7 years to even like GTA V. I was always a fan of the main characters especially Trevor, but the story and downgraded gameplay from the heavy GTA IV always bothered me. Replaying most of the games during the pandemic gave me new appreciation for it but compared to my top two; Vice City and IV, and compared to those I prefer watching others play like San Andreas makes me not enjoy it as much. If I go further and compare it to open world adventures I overall prefer like Saints Row 2, Mafia DE, Scarface, and even Mafia 3 which some of those rank higher than every other GTA, then GTA V is a good game but not special like many say. I remember when the game first came out and some of my favorite KZbinrs called it the greatest open world game ever which I couldn't disagree with more. For many reasons of GTA V and the ever popular RDR2 I'm not excited for GTA VI. Rockstar isn't the same company I grew up with loving and the new style isn't something I care for. Its going to be a massive success because people still think this is the same studio that gave us San Andreas but it's not

Regarding the org GTA & GTA2... most if not all mechanics in those games have been included in the 3d titles. So you should be able to judge them side-by-side... they might not score high in direct comparison but what a game does is often more important than how it looks and so on. Org GTA is perfect in the sense that all mechanics, cities, area names, names of the cars, radio stations ... all have been kept in future titles. Would make it an automatic A (or B) imo.

My favorite 2 for PS2 and original Xbox era is Vice City because of the story and voice cast San Andres because it giving so much freedom to the player and also having a great voice cast and PS3 and Xbox 360 onward I still like GTA IV and its 2 expansion games more than GTA V mainly because it didn't feel like Rockstar Games was milking a dead cow with constantly re releasing the game for every time a new console was released

Bro, GTA VC, GTA SA are iconic but and perfect finished games with limited amount of resources but GTA 4 and GTA TBOGT were the games which much expanded beyond the limits and as video worst to best and being iconic or perfect GTA TBOGT should get 1st and GTA 4 second, don't judge on it's on it's effect on gaming and life's of people but on how better the game did then what was expected on there release. Even GTA 5 on 6th is very controversial because like 4 it has upgrade in most elements than any other GTA hence a better GTA than most of the OG GTA's like SA and VC are emotions but projects like IV and V are perfection which didn't won people's hearts.

I loved GTA V the first time I beat it when it came out. I’ve beat it on every generation and release and I started to hate it more and more every time. But it’s just a giant sub par action movie when it comes to the story. Should’ve had another 10-15 missions in it. And the entire dock heist section is pointless. And after you get back in LS the game goes into overdrive to quickly wrap everything up.

so your and my first 2 choices are same, till now I have played 7 gta games (3, vc, sa, lcs, vcs, 4, 5) and I will rank them like this.. 1) san andreas (this is not only the first gta game but also the first video game that I played in 2006 and it will always be my favourite gta or video game of all time). 2 ) vice city. 3 ) gta 4. 4 ) liberty city stories. 5 ) gta 3. 6 ) gta 5. 7 ) vice city stories (I never liked this game, don't get me wrong but why they increase emergency mission levels from 12 to 15 it makes no sense plus why there were so many unnecessary side missions like that air rescue mission which was annoying as hell, beach patrol, fire copter and more but of course the music of this game was fantastic and in my opinion vcs will sit at 3rd position in terms of music after vice city and san andreas).

I have to say, everyone’s default is to say San Andreas is the best and for the time it is. But to say the world of the older GTA games feel alive is a lie. The worlds are as unalive as the worlds in Saints Row. GTA 5 and Red dead have wildlife, people doing things in the day besides walking around aimlessly. I think that’s something everyone looks over when playing the newer Rockstar games how hard it is to make a game world feel real and they nail it with GTA 5 Red Dead 1 and 2. I wish they got more recognition for that and there Rage engine which makes shooting feel so much more real.

I would always perfer the deeper straightforward storyline of GTA 4 and VCS. SA is just way too bloated and dragged out of a story and VC’s story took a backseat after killing Diaz. They’re great games, but highly overrated to me.

I will tell you something. I DESPISE Vice City. Out of all the GTA games I played, it is easily my least favorite. The gameplay is atrocious, the story is barely a thing. I don't care for the 80s and have no nostalgia for the game itself. The idea, that so many people consider it the best in the franchise or atleast one of the best is laughable, especially when VCS is VC, but actually good. And when SA, 4 and 5 are a thing, which are superior to it in anyway.

I'll be honest i always feel like some sort of outcast when i say gta 4 isnt my favorite and Niko isnt my favorite protagonist. I dont find him as well made or as good as other protagonists in the series. To me him and a lot of characters arent exactly layered and the only thing that defines them is either on trait or personality such as their personal traumas. Throughout the whole game every single frickin character you meet is all. I was beat as a kid i didnt have a dad i saw my friends die im sad im just a sad person lets drink im sad. Like damn i GET rockstar wanted to make a thematically different game but it needs layers and more tone than just Look. Sad characters. Its why CJ works as one of my favorite characters because despite having it rough the guy knows how to live and be snarky AND take something serious, he feels more human than the character everyone says is "the most human." Just my possibly terrible hot take.

I think the angle they were going for with Niko, that he wanted to leave the life of crime, worked better in RDR with Arthur and I guess John than it ever did with Niko. I never really felt that Niko did want to get out of the life of crime and there's nothing much else to do in GTA other than be a violent criminal anyway, the game never discourages you from outright murdering all of the city if you so well want too whereas it does make you feel like such a prick if you were to, let's say, murder all of a town with Arthur with the honor system and knowing everything the character goes through. The Darko idea of it not being worth killing him would be great, if i didn't also have to go on a murderous rampage in revenge at the end of the game anyway. It takes away everything they're going for with it. You may as well just kill Darko and put him out of his misery as Niko doesn't really have any intention of not being a violent murderer one way or the other. The story is good, especially for GTA which honestly was never Rockstar's best work in regards to storytelling (Again, RDR blows it out of the water for storytelling imo even though GTA has always been more fun to play as a sandbox) but I don't think it's the masterpiece people make it out to be either. There's a lot of problems and holes in the story.
