Unfortunately none of the rooms in my house are really big enough, not even the garage :( so I had to make the track in the back yard instead.

One of the best decisions I made all year that's for sure, the cost to fun ratio is off the charts with these.

Those look like a hoot! Shame they can't do jumps though. If that size track is 'spouse limited', might be cool to get some used turf carpet and cut some more tracks to lay out around the yard. Kinda like sections of slot car track so you can mix it up. Have some x-overs and bridges. Old garden hose for track walls where needed. Great.....now you got me thinking of my yard.......LOL!
@hikingphotog
@hikingphotog 11 ай бұрын
Not limited other than I didn't want to take up too much of my yard for it, and its about as big as those things really need, its hard enough to get a few laps in before someone gets stuck anyways. I have been thinking about the turf carpet idea, would be a good way to race even when the track is wet (these things really don't handle sticky surfaces well, they just roll for days on tight cornering). I'm also wanting to put in more of an oval in the other corner of the yard and maybe make that one big enough to be able to use the 1/16ths on, if only just barely.

Am I the only one wondering what that track looks like from satellite images of Google maps? 😂 I'm not criticizing, the video is great. Love the slow motion footage. 😉
@hikingphotog
@hikingphotog 2 ай бұрын
They haven't updated the satellite view yet, but its not as bad as it seems to be, more like a Z with a longer top for the straight. We wanted an L shape but with a chicane on the short end of the main straight. So I guess its more like a squared J with a diagonal return across to the main leg.

That's awesome to see another video of your track! Your previous 284161 video is what led me to purchase mine. Right now mine has a broken triangle-shaped lower arm labeled B. Ordering a metal replacement and will see if it fits! Also broke one of the plastic poles on the battery mount and I'm ordering a original replacement part for that, couldn't find a metal one.
@hikingphotog
@hikingphotog 11 ай бұрын
Thanks, glad to hear it! So far the only thing we've broken on these has been one steering link (fixed with some super glue and heat shrink) and possibly one rear diff. We got replacement diff but haven't taken the time to put it in since its been awful weather the last few months.

@AwesomesMan 11 ай бұрын
@@hikingphotog update: the metal lower control arm doesn't fit with the stock suspension so I had to order the stock plastic control arm instead. The good thing is that these R/C are quite easy to work on! Unfortunately now my steering servo is broken lol. Makes a whining noise and internal gears run max speed on its own and it gets super hot. Was interesting to open it up and look at the gears but I think it has a short or something in the electronics so not something I can fix. I'll have to order a replacement steering servo. The gears in the servo had zero lube/grease so I'll probably open up the new one to lube as well.
@hikingphotog
@hikingphotog 10 ай бұрын
Yeah, we got the metal shocks to put on them but then found out the screws for the shocks don't match up quite right. Still need to see about swapping the diff out to see if that fixes the slowness problems (drives like its got a dead battery the whole time). As much as all these cars are supposed to be based off the same chassis and use the same parts, guess there was some leeway in manufacturing.

Can anyone tell me if there are oil-filled shocks that will fit the 284161 model. Great video.......!
@hikingphotog
@hikingphotog 9 ай бұрын
They do, but appears as though its a crapshoot if the screws fit the existing mounts very well. All those models use the same parts so just look up for one of the others if 284161 doesn't pull anything up. You can find them mostly on ebay or aliexpress.

Hello, what do you suggest me to match the grass on the track, sand, dirt or what? I see that you have it cut very close to the ground and it is very even and what do you use to prevent the grass from growing? Tks.

Well as a biker i know that packing in the dirt helps very well to create a flat surface and prevent weeds from punching through. Sooo wet it and pack the dirt with a roller, hard bike tires or a shovel's back end, would be my humble advice. Does leave a much flatter surface but also gives a great opportunity to add some bowl corners/slanted/banked elements. But mann this backyard track looks fun! 🥹

We've got a couple of wire baskets we use to grade the track, which helped pull up the remaining grass and helps prevent new growth. Along with continued use and wear and packing, should help keep it clear. I have on occasion pulled a few new growths by hand to make sure I got all the roots.

Spraying salt mixed in with vinegar can be applied with a cheap plant/garden sprayer. (Warm the vinegar on the stove to dissolve the salt.) About a litre of vin. to a cup or so of regular salt. Can add more salt if the salt is still dissolving in the vinegar. (Liquid can only hold so much solids in dissolve suspension). Add a squirt of dish soap too, to help it stick, if you want. Just do if when it's warm out and not going to rain. Ecco friendly too. Can also burn with a propane roofing torch. Just need to heat the plants so they shrivel a bit. This basically boils the liquid in them. Leave'm to die or hit with the a fore mentioned salt and vin. solution. Redo as needed. If you want it packed hard right away, rent a plate tamper from a box store. Or buy or make a hand tamper and thump away.

Its a busy stretch of dirt for sure... then these crazy massive machines start ripping through their colony... I always like watching the bugs running around on the close to ground angles. Spiders at least get smart with it and stop moving when the cars get close and then start moving again once its clear.

How did you clean the rc? Just shower it? Was the dirt stuck in pinion and spur gear?
@hikingphotog
@hikingphotog 2 ай бұрын
Yeah, it was a tiny piece of rock/sand that was lodged in the spur gear. I cleared it out with a tiny pick that I used to just slide between the teeth as I spin the gear to make sure they are all clear.

Needs some jumps
@hikingphotog
@hikingphotog Жыл бұрын
These little things don't do jumps very well, the suspension has practically zero travel. Jumps also require a lot of dirt, that I don't have extra of in the yard. I had to dig up a patch of grass behind my shed in order to get enough dirt to fill a couple of large depressions.

Realy nice track! I drive my WL´s in the garage ;) But it looks like it´s time to go outside! How did you made your track? Is it just a real deep cut with the lawnmower or is the grass completly removed? My indoor-track: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5qxi4avaZKtZ80

@hikingphotog 5 ай бұрын
It was a process to get to where its at now, and still stuff to do. We cut it down as low as the mower would go, then deep raked it and hit it with the weed eater down to dirt. It was still very rough and full of grass roots for a while but every time before we ran the cars we'd take a couple of metal baskets with weights in them and do a few laps grating the dirt. It slowly got smoother and smoother, you can see the difference by the 6 minute mark. Now its very smooth but having some issues with weeds/grass encroachment as well as all the birds that love their dirt baths (sometimes it looks like the track was carpet bombed from all the craters the birds make). I've actually got a 12x28 roll of outdoor turf carpet that we want to roll out and race on but don't have the open area for it at the moment. I'd even like to get some other outdoor carpet to cut out and put over the track to keep the birds off it but to allow us to race when its otherwise muddy. You can watch the initial progress of the track in my first 284161 video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWGYkpmHjZ2IbNE) The night racing progress as the track smoothed out and we got better lighting (kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJ-yh3-KjahpetU)
