Sat down to watch examples and techniques this morning, particularly about FW inks. After viewing parts of 5 videos before yours here, I was surprised to find the awesome amount of information you shared, because it knocked the others out of the ball park. Even comparing FW to Dr Martins blew me away because Dr Martins was the first non acrylic to use, but was quickly disappointed with the impermanence of it, compared to FW. Learned so much I had to say thanks and great job speaking, sharing and teaching. I got the exact information I was wanting to find and even more.

Cool video. I have used the FW Acrylics for awhile and they are really amazing for how versatile they are. Being able to get opacity and transparency in the same medium is rare.

what are favourite FW shades that you come back to or use all the time? They can be mixed in a palette of course, but trying to decide what to get as my first 3-4. It's hard to tell how it'll look on paper when buying online. Great videos btw, I could watch you blend and paint all day!

any chance doing some more videos on blending fw inks... i only use these inks but sometimes find it difficult blending as the ink tends to draw alot quicker... thanks and loving the videos keep up the great work.

michael walsh Yeah i think i know what you mean, i try to just use a little paint and not let to much go in the water so it doesn't all spread into it, i do think you got to work it back and forth on itself a little more so it doesn't just draw out quick like you said. They also can leave marks if they dry a little whilst trying to work with them because they dry pretty much permanent . Yeah ill do another video on them, thinking of drawing some flash then painting it with a voice over of how im going about it, ill use some FW acrylics to colour them with!

I have a bottle of FW black I use for inking because it cooperates with Copics, unlike regular india ink. I might have to check out the colors as well. I color with Dr Martins Hydrus and Syncromatic watercolors but I can a big advantage to having such bold colors available, especially for reds.

James Fielding Cool i would like to see acrylics mixed with copics! I've only ever tried using pro markers. Markers get expensive fast when you want to get a few colours haha. What do you think of the Hydrus and Syncromatic ones? Ive never tried them before.

I only use grey Copics because it's convenient to have accurate gray tones and you only need a few of them (I have N1, N3, N5, N7 and N9 and I can get a pretty good gradiation). The alcohol in the ink dissolves the shellac used in normal india ink so it's really helpful to have the FW. I bought two empty Copics and filled them with black ink: One is Speedball Super Black, which is cheaper, and one is the FW, which is more expensive. It's a very convenient marker system. When I get around to buying Radian watercolors I think I'll put them in empty Copics as well for convenience. The Hydrus and Synchromatic are nice. I have the first Hydrus set and it's literally just high quality pigments in a liquid suspension. They're very concentrated so if you work with, say, Ultramarine right out of the bottle you will get a very dark and opaque blue. But if you add water it becomes lighter and more transparent. The colors are very vibrant and because they're composed of a single pigment rather then formulated dyes they're a little more stable when you work with them and they're also totally permanent and lightfast. I haven't used the Radiant colors yet so I can't compare but the Synchromatic seem similar. I have #2 Cadmium, #27 Magenta and #39 Cerulean. I chose these colors because they're Process Yellow, Magenta and Cyan and I wanted to experiment with that gamut to try and replicate the look of Technicolor film, as well as the 4-colour look of vintage comic books. These behave the same way I've seen the Radiants behave: Not water resistant at all (which is helpful for blending; if you don't work fast with the Hydrus it will stain the paper and leave darker marks), bright clear 100% transparent colors. I only just got these recently and I haven't done a lot of experimenting yet. One thing I've noticed is that by mixing the #2 and the #27 I get a very nice bright scarlet red, while with Hydrus it's a little more difficult to get a red that doesn't skew pink.

James Fielding Ah thats cool, you can fill copics up with inks? Hydrus sounds good being permanent and how they are really strong pigments, you got to be confident messing around with those permanent inks haha i like the leeway i get from them not being waterproof and being able to play around with them more. Lightfast tho thats a good quality to have don't have to worry about them fading. Yeah guess they all have there own advantages. The Technicolor film idea sounds really interesting you done much with it yet?

bigdaddyrichter Click on this link to see how i paint them kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJTVfYZ4i9qHm7s Mainly use Dr.Ph.Martin's Saddle Brown 13a, but i also like Dr.Ph.Martin's Tobbacco Brown (that might work better for dead people and skulls tho haha) but really when comes down to i would just mix a nice brown/yellowish colour and it works. I don't really tend to use a pink flesh tone i always prefer something a bit darker with more contrast. saying that maybe i should try something like that out to mix things up! hope that helps

I love the fw inks. I just wish it was easier to get a hold of a wider range of colors. getting them in store is a bitch cuz it's usually just the standard colors and getting them offline from where I'm looking is more expensive. but overall, now that ive experienced using these, i wont use anything else. love your art, man!

awesome dude ..do u wet the area before applying the ink? i keep getting a line mark where i load the paint and after I fade it out theres a line..no matter how fast I do it this happens. it doest happen with when i use watercolour inks ..would applying water on area first help prevent this?

How do you feel about using the fw colors to fade over lines? Doesnt it fade them out? I really like the look of bold flat black lines, and would hate to have to go over them a second time

I guess he refer to the fact that FW might be a bit opaque and the black of your outlines below will look "washed out" after apply them

nice vid. I exclusive use Ecoline for my painting, but I guess because I'm into more strictly traditional stuff and I like my colors to be toned down and not so bright, but definitely FW are best for neotrad or pieces which require very even solid portions of colors which might be more problematic to achieve with watercolors.

Diego Delfino Ace, I think Ecoline are my favourite brand, they also got some really cool vibrate colours and absolutely love the dark brown/yellows they do. You ever tried the talens drawing inks?

Tom Smith never tried Talens. Where I live atm I never had a chance to find them. So far I worked with Dr Martens Hydrus series (too muddy and opaque for me), Waverly watercolors (beautiful tones but I cannot get a single shade out of them even pre wetting the paper), Ecoline and Windsor and Newton India ink for my blacks. I want to try the FW black instead of the India ink, so far the best one I ever used is Dr. Martens Black Star Matte, you can lay down large block area without worrying about shining marks at all. Diego Delfino Yeah i seen people using the hydrus and looked almost a little muddy like you said. Waverly ones i was thinking of trying them out seen a few people go on about them in the past. I have always just used winsor and newton because its easy to get hold of and works for me, ahh yeah see i never really noticed this before people started pointing it out, is it something to do with the shellac in the paint? might give that martens black star matte a go, FW acrylics does look a little bolder and not as washed out as the winsor and newton indian ink but i think you get smoother gradations with indian ink but both are fun to use. I don't use instagram anymore, googled your username tho, your stuff is super nice! lovely elegant girls!

Fucking amazing!Im so used to traditional painting styles and I just found tattoo flash art that are so amazing I wish I could have been brung up seeing this rather than a bunch of art by dead white guys

Technically, weren't Sailor Jerry and his predecessors mostly white, and now dead? They were influenced by the Japanese tattoo artists (and maybe tattoo artists from other countries) though. I hear you though, Kuro. You won't see much tattoo flash in university arts classes. Lots of white artists remain unrecognized, as is the case with artists of other races.

Ricardo Rodriguez I also use winsor and newton. Try using more water or you could even dilute the ink by mixing it with some water, this will make the black ink weaker and a more grey tone. In this video all i used was water to fade the ink out.
