I've wanted to try something similar to this for years. The difference is I wanted to make the rear axle electrically driven, thus turning the car into a 4x4 hybrid. I figured I could remove the air conditioner compressor and use that bracket to mount the generator. Batteries can go wherever.
@ancientapparition16384 жыл бұрын
the issue with that design is if the batteries are mounted on the bottom of the car or in the rear your weight distribution will be messed up. of course I guess if you only use the rear motor in short bursts it wont mess it up too much but then whats the point

@@doyouhavetono Glad you're getting it. Remember electric motors can engage and disengage at the speed of light. Clutches and syncros are slower. Torque converters are even slower. A little extra boost from an electric motor would make any car feel like it had nitros. Zip Zip Zoom.

Back in the early 90's, in Scotland, I worked for a guy called Ian Wilson who built and raced rally cars. He had a Skoda Favorit that he had put in the engine, gearbox and axles from a Ford Sierra Cosworth 4x4. He took the turbo off and ran the engine on twin 50 Weber carbs. The car also put much larger brakes on it, so it was in tarmac spec, but could go to gravel if needed. It could really shift as it had about 160+ bhp.

how did they connect the gearbox, engine and transfer case together since they are from different vehicles?
@RustyorBroken4 жыл бұрын
At 7:03 he is fitting the shaft of the transfer case into the output of the transmission. Immediately after that they show him tig welding on the transmission housing. They only show about 1 second of welding. Immediately after that they show the trans after welding. He added two bosses and a flat strap bracket as a means to mount the transfer case to the trans housing. It all happens very quickly in the video. I had to watch it 3 times to figure it out myself. At 7:10 after the trans is in the car you get another shot of the new bosses and bracket that were added by welding. They then bolt the transfer case in.
@peugeoting4 жыл бұрын
so they welded together a mounting to hold the transfer case and then used a bracket to seal the connection between the trans output and transfer input? how did the shafts even work together?
@RustyorBroken4 жыл бұрын
Most of the cars they use are rear wheel drive, but this one is not. It is a front wheel drive. At 2:00 you can see how the new parts are going to fit into the vehicle: transfer case, rear axle, and the drive shaft that will connect the two. The transfer case they have sourced is designed specifically for front wheel drive transaxles. It is meant to fit in between the trans and the wheel hub on the right hand side of the vehicle. Notice the short half shaft that is connected to the far side of the transfer case when it's sitting on the floor. The issue that they have is that the input shaft of the transfer case is not compatible with the splines output of the transaxle. That's why they cut the input shaft off the transfer case, then cut the end of the car's original long half shaft, and weld the original half shaft piece onto the transfer case input. At 3:46 you can see that process. The transaxle already has a seal for the original half shaft, likewise the transfer case (probably) already has a seal for it's input shaft. At 7:07 you can see the seal in the transmission case for the original long half shaft that will now seal around the transfer case input shaft. It's the black rubber donut looking thing that is in the middle of the screen (the same area where they welded the bosses and bracket for mounting the transfer case).
