Take a glimpse behind the scenes as the most winning Formula Drift team in history undertakes an extensive race car build in only four months to launch the Rockstar Energy Drink / Nexen Tire Toyota Corolla Hatchback just in time for the Long Beach season opener.
This fast-tracked race car build was made possible thanks to driver Fredric Aasbo, team technicians "Shaldo" (Shawn Hillier and Aldo Villagran), Georgheinz Rios, designer Jon Sibal and Chris Woodward from TRD.

The Papadakis Racing team began drifting in 2004 and is the most winning team in Formula Drift history, earning the 2015 title with driver Fredric Aasbo, as well as back­to­ back championship titles with driver Tanner Foust in 2007 and 2008. The Rockstar Energy Drink / Nexen Tire Toyota Corolla Hatchback is the latest competition build from the Hawthorne, California, based team.
Team owner Stephan Papadakis is a legend of sport­ compact racing who began building his reputation in the 1990s with the first front-wheel ­drive, tube­-chassis drag car in the U.S. The team earned multiple records and championships in the discipline, turning in elapsed times and trap speeds previously thought unattainable in front­-drive drag cars. Papadakis' successes in front­-wheel drive were matched by his efforts in rear­-wheel drive when he campaigned a Honda Civic that became just the fifth car to join the NHRA's Sport Compact 200 MPH club.

@therealnightwriter how's he a dumbass? They literally toss every component outside of the harness and drivetrain, which they usually sell off. How hard is it to pull parts off of a car when you don't have to keep track of a single bolt, nut or panel? Not too hard. I can single handedly pull an engine and trans in under 2 hours with hand tools while organizing all plugs, hoses and hardware. Imagine if I had 4 more of me working to strip the rest of the car.

I have to admit, if these cars were RWD I would buy it in a heartbeat. Toyota has stepped their game up when it comes to more "economy" based vehicles. I still think Mazda is kong though because their cars are fun to drive, look good, and they're affordable.

I love Toyota, but they keep trying to make all their cars more sporty. If they simply made their entire line up RWD they would get so much recognition from the young crowd they're trying to target. Can you imagine a RWD Camry or Corolla? That would set them apart from everyone else by a considerable amount. There are benefits of having fwd, but the hearts of young men long for the driving dynamics of RWD.

the could have already been doing it, they have to make two separate CV shafts and one differential anyways. The only difference is the rear differential would require it's own casting instead of sharing one with the transaxle, and then a separate drive shaft. Otherwise it's the same number of bearings, motormounts and bushings. Most of the cars already have a rear subframe or something like it. They can't go back and re-design the cars but "Moving Forward" they could change it up. It would still be cheaper than making AWD cars. They really were on the right track with the Scion FRS and Toyota GT86 or whatever it's called. If today's Corolla, Corolla hatchback and Scion IM were rear wheel drive, that alone would be a major selling point.
