Gang members have high rates of mental illness. I think art saves when it tells the truth. Not just sentimental superficial emotion. The problem with gangs is that members tend to have adult child issues. They learn gangster fantasies and revenge ideation from a young age. They learn to play politics and psychological warfare. They exploit, extort, and enable others bad behavior with lies. They brainwash, control, manipulate and dominate with lies. Gang leaders manipulate others like toxic cult dictators with thought stopping empty rhetoric, mind numbing cliches, and hypnotic suggestion. And with emotional manipulation. The self aggrandizement and mythology. The power of pity. The power of hate and appeals to rage and pity and shame and fear. Clayton cardenas personal videos on KZbin are a good example of the narcissistic language patterns. What we see are the cognitive distortions and logical fallacies and the narrow minded prejudice against the evil “other”. The rigid unspoken rules and the abusers anti social rules about what is verbal abuse. The frivolous data and empty assertions and pretentious misuse of moral jargon. In dysfunctional families children are systematically taught how to lie and falsely accuse and flip the script and self righteous indignation and evade and divert and deflect from accountability and reasoned deliberation. They learn how to love bomb and play the victim or the big protector and triangulation games. And how to play staging and framing games and bait and bash and flip the script. How to play social control games. The smear campaign, random verbal abuse, emotionally charged moralizing to falsely accuse targets. To pathologize the reaction. To evade and divert and deflect from an open and transparent dialogue with nonsense language. Word salad. “Morals” that are the exact opposite of social norms of moral principles. So brother for brother right or wrong is considered right. When actually a good brother will try to seek truth and find meaning and understanding together. He will demonstrate critical thinking and complex thought. He will try to persuade his brother not to run toward that cliff. He will speak up if he sees his brother running into a trap. The same with “unconditional love”. Love requires some measure of truth and trust. Loving people do not just ignore that a brother decides to become a criminal. Loving people try to persuade the person to straighten out and offer help and try to resolve deeper issues and solve problems in a functional way. Control freaks and gang leaders make up rigid rules that are designed to control communication and block genuine human connection. Like tyrannical dictators, they grandiosely play god and you see their childish omniscient certainty, maniacal sense of omnipotence and omnipresence. Common low life thugs with severe and narrow minded bigotry, who hate all others and lack reflective functioning and objectify all others on a fantasy stage where they are the director, defining everyone elses reality, tend to be psychotics who scan the environment for a pretend evil enemy, and act out their psychosis in a repetition compulsion. They bait and tempt others and scrutinize and nitpick and make up rules and troll storm with nonsense language. They play mind games and are self deceptive. They are constantly provoking and pathologizing the reaction for confirmation bias for their paranoia and hatred and for attention, adulation, and pity. They smile with a saccharine guise and “get” people who think they are Best friends. With undetected stealth. They abuse and bully innocent bystanders who are pretend “bullies. They imagine an innocent question or comment is abuse and overtly or covertly bully the innocent bystander. These kids learn from a young age how to alienate and isolate others, to falsely accuse, provoke and pathogize the reaction and report back to the control freak. These mind games and bigotry and controlling communication, blocking connection with logical fallacies, are what these children live with in their families. The children are troll stormed or seduced into mental oblivion, and then rebuilt in the image of the maniacal abuser, who they parrot, with Stockholm’s syndrome, whose thrall they are in, as child soldiers in an unspoken family gang war and ongoing power contest, sibling rivalry turned into a sadism addiction. Many of them develop callous unemotional traits, and spar with word salad, and win lose in a zero sum game. With the primitive part of their brain on overdrive, they are easily misled by false prophets and hirelings. If an acting coach advises thinking like a psychopath, and disregarding everything but the will to success and power, they swallow the sick ideology hook, line, and sinker. With free floating anxiety and depression, shame and rage, they can seek distraction in a variety of maladaptive endeavors.

I first saw him in the first season of the series Lethal Weapon. He made such an impact that when I heard he was in Mayans, I was ecstatic. He is astonishing in Mayans (and pretty much anything else he is in), as his character Coco Cruz with his signature catch phrase of “My Bad”. His character and the arc he goes through is what makes Mayans such an interesting show. The depth he shows is tremendous, in all the scenes he’s in. You cannot take your eyes off him, and it isn’t because of all the tattoos he has or his unique face, but by the sheer brilliance of his craft. He is what we directors call an absolute dream actor, such range and power that all you have to do is give him words to say and watch it all just happen. And I guarantee you will be floored by the end.
