Based on James Clavell’s novel, FX’s Shōgun is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.

I lived and worked in Japan in the 90s, and it was then that I first saw Sanada-san's acting. He quickly became one of my favorite actors in Japan. Since then, I've been excited to watch his career growing in Japan and overseas. This new project is a great achievement for him. Congratulations to Sanada-san and the entire team working with him to bring the novel, Shogun, to life.

I met Hiroyuki in 2002 here in New Zealand when I was a 16 year old working on my uncles dairy farm. They were filming here in Taranaki. We got to take pics with him and other cast members of the Last Samurai. He was very gracious and spoke about the spiritual aspect of our land. Our ancestral mountain: Mt. Taranaki, doubled as Mt. Fuji in tLS. Since then I have followed and watched nearly everything he’s been in. I absolutely can’t wait to watch this series.

He is one of the greatest. Whenever there is a movie with him, I have to see it, just watched last Samurai these days again. It doesn‘t matter if he plays the good or bad guy, he is the prototype character you think of a Japanese man. Deepest respect 👌

He truly is a legend. To me he ranks up there with Toshiro Mifune. Such a wonderful person, actor, and so much more. I would imagine he would be great to sit and chat with.

This is a masterpeice so far. I hope more people give it a chance. Hiroyuki Sanada is a legend. So glad he finally gets a true leading role in America with great writing. Makes sence the show is so good if he is a producer aswell.

This is what dedication looks like. I think Sanada would want this series to be as authentic as possible, therefore having a more hands on deck approach is crucial, to ensure a more accurate portrayal of Japan.
