I think a big difference to consider is how the FX3 manages the ergonomics for the top handle audio attachment as opposed to Sony A7Siii’s handles its alternative, the K3M. The FX3’s handle system actually allows for safe expansion from the top handle for a monitor where the A7Siii has little to no flexibility on making a sturdy setup with it. This makes FX3’s audio interface viable in more shooting configurations and situations.

I just sold my Pocket 6K, loved it, but mostly being a "one man band" I bought the FX3 and so far really happy. Very light weight and autofocus, In body IS is amazing. I got tired of stressing about whether I was in focus or not and lugging my rigged P6K all day was taxing to say the least... Most of my videos are on the web for viewing and not many would ever notice the difference. You forgot to mention false colors missing also..

@@frankhu8692 You are exactly right about that. Most of us aren't even aspiring to a "serious" cinema camera. We have day jobs, buddy. So, high quality KZbin clips are all we really want to produce. Hence, FX3 > BMPCC.

Honestly, I have a lot of the same sentiments you have about the BMPCC 6K Pro, stressing out about focus is one major reason. Of course AF in FX3’s is so reliable that it completely took that stress away from me as well. When I used it for the first time I was blown away, and the image quality is pretty good as well for small one-man show kind of setups. But in a bigger production would suffer because of the lack of the basic cinema features. It’s a GREAT camera overall, but just don’t call it a cinema camera

Interesting take on the FX3, even if you take the word "cinema" out of the equation, it still does possess cinematic qualites that you notice whether it's from the a7siii or the fx6/9 etc. While it does shoot 23.98 fps, as opposed to a true 24p with a shutter angle of 172.8, I'm fine shooting on 25P for the majority of my projects. I agree with you on certain things like a FW update to make more functionalities assessable from a D.P perspective, but straight out of the box, I wouldn't invest $6500.00 into the FX3 right now, maybe later down the track if they make a MKii version.

Great rundown as usual, Sherif. Just a few random things (1) I've heard FX3 skintones tend more toward magenta, while a7s III skintones have a greenish tint; (2) the FX3 will have support in FCP X for both WB and ISO in ProRes RAW (not that it matters to me now, since I've switched over to Resolve 17); (3) the resolution is so poor on the LCD of the a7s III that I often find myself having to use the magnifier to see whether there are any zebras in the highlights; and (4) five months later and I'm still waiting for Tilta to start shipping the Arca Swiss QR plate for their a7s III cage so I can mount it on my Gitzo!

Atomos writes: Users will benefit from the full flexibility offered by the ProRes RAW format as Atomos ensures that all the camera White Balance and ISO/ Exposure Offset adjustments will be available within Final Cut Pro to the user. So yeah, it's confirmed. But like I said, if you're serious about color, you'd be better off using Resolve.

@@JonPais gotcha! But you are right about raw. Just looked it up and Atomos issued a development press release. To me that’s cool because the I refuse to shoot and use raw if I can’t adjust white balance and iso after the fact.

I have never been on a narrative big-budget shoot where timecode was a thing. External TC is a holdover from film camera days to ensure the camera was running accurately at the project frame rate. It was also used to sync cameras to tv screens on camera. Broadcast multicamera productions obviously need time code and sync.

You nailed it. Actually the A7S3 is a great camera which basically offers the same features than the FX3. The only thing that I really miss is the fan for Wildlife filmmaking in hot environments.

I guess I am confused but I do have time code on my fx3 and have used it. I can take a picture of it or something? Maybe it is something different but it’s called time code and I use it like that function? I’m confused

It has a time code yes, but what I meant is timecode “in”. Meaning you can jam a time code device in a time ode input. A common practice in cinema camera in a multicam setup and when recording external audio

Great video! I guess the FX3 is the new hybrid, cinema/video, instead of photo/video. Detachable viewfinder is a great idea! I’d put another smart hotshoe on the left side for the viewfinder. Sometimes I do walk & shoot only viewing thru the viewfinder (it helps to hv a spotter). I’m not sure why it’s so hard for Sony to get basic things right (just copy Panasonic and add autofocus); it may be on purpose though, so they can just release a new version & get everyone to talk about it. The FX3 is still appealing tho; I’d take it over the a7siii any day, mostly for all day filming with less noise. Thanks for this video!

keep in mind FX3 shoots photos as well just like S3, viewfinder is better maybe for photos yes, but not necessary. And yeah, weird they can't get things right, but i agree.. possibly intentional, to make you buy more and more. I like the analogy of Panasonic hahaha... yeah panasonic knows what filmmakers want in terms of user experience and customizability, but they suck at AF, FPS and rolling shutter

It's a very interesting camera body for someone who's maybe looking to step up from something like an A7iii, but the price jump is just a bit too far I think and the footage from the Siii/FX3 looks weirdly blotchy to my eyes. I think it's the aggressive in-camera denoising but I'm not sure.

I so agree with you, though I am going to buy the Sony fx3 with a heavy heart, especially for the lack of time code (I use it a lot). As a self-shooting director I need some of these features, and am leaving out the A7sIII only because of the cooling fan (I work in super hot areas, and often have long hours of continuous shooting). I was considering BMPCC 6K pro, but because of the many run and gun situations and hand held shooting I do, dropped it in favour of the FX3.

Good video. What I think it’s that the give those feature as an actual cinema camera so the FX6 would have no reason to exist. The FX3 has just few aspects that make it better than A7S III in terms of material and the fan. But overall it’s not so an improvement to the mirrorless model.

I cannot wait for DCI 4K in firmware update on both a7siii and fx3. They can do it easily since both of these cameras are doing oversampling from 10 mp to 8mp for 3840x2160. Instead of that oversampling they can just give us normal 4096x2160. I know I can get that resolution in RAW but I want to get DCI in internal recording as well!

Nice video. The Sigma fp does everything the FX3 should have done including tiltable EVF, timecode, angled shutter, DCI and it shoots high bitrate 444 RAW. Throw on a cage a calibrated monitor and a PL-mount and it’s a liable cinema camera. For less than 3 grand

The production quality of this video is insane!! Can you please tell me how long it took to produce this (scripting / editing / After Effects)? It would have taken me weeks, if not a month. This type of visually expressive content is nice. PS - The low screen resolution and small size frustrated me so much! Not to mention the missing shutter angle, and lack of screw mounts at the bottom… how hard is it to make a damn cinema camera?

Great video and 100% agree, although having used both I did prefer the shooting experience on the FX3 and it’s made me difficult to go back to A7S iii. I am no Sony fan boy as my fave camera is the S1H. There was just something about the FX3, the weight/ the button layout and size in my hand that i enjoyed. Either way both great cameras and if you own A7s iii you’re more thank okay

One of the few posts that doesn't laud the camera as a feat of magic (Blackmagic?). Given the lack of those most important features, I'm still surprised at how it keeps getting rated so highly. And as for all those 1/4" mounting points, they quickly become moot when you attach the handle. Can you use the remaining two at all when the handle is attached. BTW, the Blackmagic cameras don't have all those mounting points (the top one only being a locating point for a cage) because the body is a carbon fibre composite and would require a metal shell to be durable enough for mounting accessories.

However, one thing that I've noticed since KZbin started recommending me FX3 videos after seeing your, is the extent to which people are rigging the FX3. One of the constant annoyances for me are the ongoing statements that you have to rig out a BMPCC4K/6K before it's usable, yet no one seems to say the same about any other camera and especially the new FX3. I've recently seen FX3 rigs that make my somewhat chunky BMPCC4K rig look positively compact.

Bigger screen, true 24fps, internal timecode, DCI 4k options. That's all it needed to be a true cinema camera and mostly could be added with firmware update.

Great video. I have the FX3. It would be great to get a menu more inline with BlackMagic’s one and shutter angle incorporated into it as well. The lcd is way small to use by itself, it is true that it’s pretty much just a touch menu. I really miss the ergonomics and build quality of the camera I traded in for the FX3, the Nikon Z6. I’m assuming the R5 also feels superior in the hand compared to the FX3. Of all the buttons on the camera the ones that sticks out the most as being non-ergonomic and ultimately cheap is the power button. It’s something that you would find on an electronic device from the 90’s. The top handle feels flimsy and the cold shoe adapter for it is a total joke to put on with it’s microscopic screws. I don’t think dual gain ISO applies for S-Cinetone as 12,800 doesn’t show the noise reduction that Slog3 reflects at that number. With that being said, the image output is terrific and the camera is wildly light. Class-leading autofocus is something I’ll really enjoy having as well. I’ve also preordered the SmallRig cage and a handle which I’m looking forward to getting. Oh yeah, Clear Image Zoom is very cool!

The second base ISO is always 4 stops higher than the first base ISO of any color gamma. S-cinetone has a lower base ISO than S-log 3, that’s why his second base ISO isn’t 12800. You just need to add 4 stops to know the second base ISO for a given PP. Hope that helps.

Personally, they missed one big feature, internal variable ND filter. On top of that , buttons layout, record output setting are not so cinematic enough. Hope Sony improves their IBIS, at least beat Panasonic S1H. ( 3999 euros in France ) we can imagine about price to feature ratio.

We don't want internal ND filter. Because internal ND filters are not a True ND filter; they are just a darkener filter. For Cinema we use external Mitomo True-ND Filter. Only I dislike it, because it does not have DCI 4K; it's just an UHD. Even Cine-Tone we don't want on this travel C-Mera (Cine Camera); I can change tone by computer, while editing. But it's a great camera for a traveler.

Couldn’t agree more. I actually feel that the A7S3 is the superior camera. The EVF, while not as useful for shooting, comes in clutch when reviewing footage in the field. The FX3’s lack of second mounting hole on bottom makes a cage a necessity. The worst in class rear LCD should have been replaced with a new panel with a 16:9 aspect ratio, not the current photo style 4:3 aspect ratio. It also should have the menu system from the FX line... not photo line. A fail in so many ways.
