Alistar is a gem. Once again you've boiled down some rather complicated information in to an easy to understand 10 minute video. Brilliant! THANK YOU AGAIN!!!!!!! Now if Sony could just let us assign what we want the wave form to look at with out attaching it to the SDI spigots, that would be great. The FS7 allowed me to set the Video Signal Monitor to always look at S-Log (when I'm shooting S-Log) by setting it to SDI 1. I would set the MLUT to go to the viewfinder, and SDI 2. Then I could send the same MLUT to the viewfinder and my HD monitor, so they were both looking at the same LUT (you always want to use the same yardstick). However, the waveform in the viewfinder always showed me what LOG was really recording, so I could see if something that looked blown out in the (crummy) viewfinder was actually fine. ALSO: They got rid of the High Low Key assignable button which was so useful on the FS7! Yes the monitor is better on the FX9, but its not that much better! Between having my waveform set for LOG, and the High Low Key button, and the Zebras reflecting what was in the LUT not LOG (that's another thing that could just be assignable) I was always sure of my exposure, while looking at the LUT for focus, color, and exposure both in the viewfinder, and my HD monitor. Yes I know that if I switch the SDI output to 4K, it will change the waveform to S-Log. I don't own a 4K monitor, and I don't want to spend thousands of dollars buying a new monitor when my $3,000 HD monitor which I really like has been working just fine thank you very much.

As an 8 year user of the FS7 and FX9 now just expose using the waveform. The goal is to have an even fat line in the middle. Or that your main subject is around the middle. These cameras have so much space to correct a slight over or underexposure that there's no reason to overthink it.

Dear sony, so why exactly can't we use mluts while shooting 1080? It would be so helpful and gamma assist doesn't really help if I want to overexpose 1-2 stops or send previews to external monitors.

So when I go to CineEI mode and adjust the ISO or EI it acts like actual gain…the picture gets brighter. What are the settings I need to have for it to work correctly? It’s supposed to get darker when you raise the EI and I would then adjust the lighting to exposure if I want to over expose a little. I have 3 FX9’s and they all act the same. I’m running firmware version 3. Please help. I’m wanting to show people how to shoot log but I need to figure it out first.

What level do you generally set the Zebras when using Color Display Assist for caucasian skin tones? I don't usually have the time to use a white or grey card. On a normal Rec 709 camera, I set the zebras for 70, or 68, so I can use skin, or concrete, or grey trees, or any number of things to judge my exposure. I'd like to be able to do the same thing when shooting Log. A colleague once told me to set them for 60, and then I'd be over exposing by a stop which isn't a bad thing with S-Log.

I’m a bit confused regarding the output format and mlut. On a graphic in this video it says that if you are recording in uhd you cannot output a monitoring lut. However , the opposite is true in my case. In uhd, I can output a lut, it’s when I’m shooting in 1080p that the output mlut option is greyed out?
@sassanfarproductions41682 жыл бұрын
Are you differentiating between viewfinder and monitor output LUT. The graphic is saying in 4k you can choose different MLUT settings for either in HD they will be the same. It's possible you are in HD and just have your MLUT turned off entirely for both
@nega90003 жыл бұрын
The Mlut settings seem deliberately designed to trip you up. Would be so easy to accidentally bake in a look without meaning to. Far better imo to have it off in all circumstances and just use Gamma Display Assist if you want a rough idea of what it'll look like processed.

When you are changing the EI value then the exposure meter changes. What does that mean? Does it actually change the exposure of the film or just the brightness of the display without having any effect on the exposure? And why does the exposure meter only goes to + 2.0 or - 2.0? And what does the number after EI mean? Something like 4.0E/H?
@SepianProductions2 жыл бұрын
That’s exactly what I’m wondering. If I’m recording slog 3 without a lut in the end product why make changes at all to the EI since that doesn’t make any changes to you’re recording unless you record and mlut? This is the only area that I’m unsure of, I thought only the aperture change would offset the overall exposure? Cheers mr.Chapman you’re content on Sony is unrivalled

I'm wondering if someone can help with something. Right at 5:09 in the video where the LUT s709 is circled, on my camera, I have the letters EC directly to the left of that. Does anyone know what the EC means? I looked in the manual and all over the internet and I can't find what EC means. I don't think it was always there. Not sure what I did to make that appear.

Shooting at 4000 base iso for low light situations and then reducing EI to 1600 will give less noise?
@andrewjeremysilke2 жыл бұрын
My understanding is: Reducing EI is not going to alter the actual footage at all. But it will make the footage appear darker on the monitor. The only situation where you'll want to reduce the EI by 1 or 2 stops, is... if you plan to increase your slog3 exposure by 1 or 2 stops for the purpose of raising the noise floor of slog3. (aka reducing the noise of blacks). This raising the exposure would be done by aperture, using less ND, longer shutter etc. If you raise the exposure of slog3, but don't compensate by dropping the EI down 2 stops, what you see on the monitor will look inaccurate to what is actually being filmed by the slog. Some people don't think you need to overexpose the FX9 by 1 or 2 stops though. So this is only if you feel like you DO need to overexpose your slog.

I am so confused. what the difference between ISO and EI ?
@shem443 жыл бұрын
ISO changes the sensor sensitivity and the final slog3 recording. EI only changes the exposure of the MLUT on the external monitor and does not affect the final slog3 recording. As mentioned by Alister, when in EI mode, you are not able to change the ISO values so you have to choose to use either 800 or 4000.
@olaraay3 жыл бұрын
@@shem44 thank you Shem, but Im still confused. what if you bake in the LUT. Would the EI change the exposure on the final output? What is the point of having EI in the 1st place when it doesn't do anything to the final image ?
@shem443 жыл бұрын
@@olaraay You can choose to bake the LUT into the internal recording but adjusting EI will still not affect it since EI mode is restricted to 800 or 4000. If you have shot with RED you will know that is how it works too. Just like photography in the past where you have to choose to buy ISO 100, 400 or 800 negative film and only use Aperture or shutter speed to adjust the exposure. EI is there to assist you to "see better" if you need by adjusting the exposure index.
@olaraay3 жыл бұрын
@@shem44 so basically the EI is there to see if you can push it if you wanted to push it in post production ?
@shem443 жыл бұрын
@@olaraay For many cameras, it is normal to overexpose by about 1-2 stop when shooting dark scenes with lots of shadows. And in post you lower the exposure by the same stops to get a proper expose image and to "MINIMISE" the noise. That means during shooting, u should lower the EI by 1-2 stops and you will see that the image is underexpose thru the LCD. What you should do is to increase the exposure by 1-2 stops either by opening the aperture or add more lights to get a proper exposure in the LCD. Now imagine without EI to guide you, you will be viewing an overexpose image throughout the whole session because you purposely overexpose by 1-2 stops. Does that makes sense?

From what I understand, adding Cine EI without adding the waveform is just absurd. Without the waveform monitor, there is no way to know how is the amount of light in a shot affecting signal values. Without a waveform you need another monitor for the same purpose. The FX3 and 30 don't have the waveform. It's frustrating how Sony is moving ahead in a weird thoughtless fashion. A pattern can be seen here. For example, when it comes to noise reduction, you cannot turn it off on lower end cameras like FX30 and FX3! Sony cannot do this to its customers just because they have a good autofocus system and a lot of top end social media influencers. Cine EI is a wonderful tool but how is it getting implemented shows how Sony wants customers to spend more on its hire end cameras. If you don't have money, you would get a crippled product. And, what happened to A7siii for which all of us waited endlessly and they bought it once it was released? That camera is getting a bastardly treatment because now Sony has the biggest pretend cinema camera of the century: the FX3! Unbelievable.
