fx9750GIII Financial Menu (TVM - Time Value of Money)

The financial menu on the fx-9750GIII (or the TVM, Time Value of Money Menu), allows you to compute financial calculations such as simple interest, compound interest, amortization, and more. This video shows you how to get to the menu, set-up the menu options, and demonstrates a few of the calculations. The menu uses templates, where you input things like payments, interest, present value, number of compound periods, etc., and then use the Function buttons to calculate different values, such as Future Value of a loan/savings, or payment amounts.

May I ask, why when I use pmt = -9k, fv = 165k, n= 15years , calc I= 2.8%. but when I change the annual 9k pmt into monthly, pmt=-750 , fv=165k, n= 180months, now calc I=2.61%? How come where all my variables just simply change to monthly instead of annual, the final calculated i is not the same between pmt 9k (annual)vs pmt 750 (monthly)??

Because the number of times you are paying interest is not the same (monthly vs. annually). The more frequently the interest compounds, the less interest rate is required to reach the same final value.

Unfortunately, you can't. However, these same calculations can be done in Run-Matrix, by pressing [OPTN] and [F6] until you find the "TVM" option. You can find the correct syntax in the User Manual (www.dropbox.com/s/uww9sdalspi5xje/fx-9750GIII_v340_User%20Guide.pdf?dl=0) on page 230/7-16.

Why is the value always negative?

That is a great question, one I had myself. In reading the manual support.casio.com/storage/en/manual/pdf/EN/004/fx-9750GIII_Soft_v340_EN.pdf to try to get an answer (p 218), it says " either the PV or the FV is positive while the other is negative", which appears to have something to do with the Newton Method that is used to do the calculations (which they show you in the manual, but it's what goes on 'behind the scenes' in the calculator). Since the calculation is the same whether you are talking about a loan installment (so a negative transaction) or a savings balance (positive) it just provides the one value and you then determine whether it should be the positive or the negative. So if savings, it should be FV positive for example. I still do find it confusing but apparently this is normal. Reading the explanation of the calculations was helpful for me.

@@CasioEdTech Oh, I understand now. Everything there is exactly how it looks on a TI-84, so they kept it the same even though it didn't make sense so as to not confuse students who are usually taught from TI-84 examples.

@@dylan.8801 Actually, this is a standard financial calculation process if you look at the calculations done. Has nothing to do with TI. It's a financial app standard - if you look at calculators designed specifically just to do financial calculations, it will be the same (So Casio, HP, etc.) It's Newton's Method.
