I just had my ACL and Meniscus repair surgery yesterday. I woke up to use the bathroom and pop another pill for pain Management. During my surgery they performed a nerve block which assisted in a better recovery out of anesthesia. I'm begging to feel my leg again and it feels heavy. I have never been this restricted from everyday life. I am also an ex athlete who enjoy still being athletic at 45. I so needed this positive but truthful reinforcement and actually what to expect. I am 23 for comparable measures. I had ACL, meniscus and MCL surgery with a bruised knee cap 2 years ago. It was the worse pain i have ever experienced and i have a very high pain tolerance. Was peeing in a bottle for almost a week as i physically couldn’t take the pain of moving it in the slightest. I took physical therapy extremely serious and had a very good physician. After about a year i was at or very near what i was at prior to my ACL tear and even played basketball at pretty much at the same level maybe just a bit slowed. Fast forward to today 2 years later i just had ACL and Meniscus surgery on my other knee (yes they got both of mine sadly) from playing basketball again. I told my doctor and all my friends that will be the last time i pick up a basketball as it’s not worth going through this again. However i had surgery less then 12 hours ago and it is not nearly the same pain although i used the same surgeon because of how well my first ACL healed. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m used to the pain, know exactly what not to do and what to do, or if it’s just a case by case but i expected the worse pain imaginable like last time but i am already walking (on crutches) to the bathroom and as long as I’m taking my painkillers and icing it the pain isn’t really bad at all. I share my story to show that if i can do this TWICE anybody can. YOU can do this. Your brain is a powerful tool don’t let it physic you out. You are much more powerful then you believe. Good luck all !!

I've torn my ACL twice (once on each knee), and I just got to say that the recovery speed can very a LOT. Speaking from mine and several other ACL tears recoveries I got to know personally, this recovery was actually really fast and successful. This is to say that you should not base your recovery stages solely from this video, as that can lead you to frustration and potentially re-injure yourself. My best advice is to always listen to your body and to focus on your own recovery, on your own specificities. Be disciplined and intentional in your recovery, and don't rush it! You got this 💪

These comments are reassuring. I tore my acl a few days after my birthday, and just recently got surgery after months of waiting and rehab. It’s been so frustrating cos i basically felt normal prior to the surgery as I’d been doing so many excercises to put on as much muscle protection as possible, I was even confident enough to dunk (off my unaffected leg). But now after the surgery even the tiniest movements are so painful, even though I’m pumped with codine. I thought something must’ve gone wrong till I checked the comments, cos this is way worse than when I tore it even, glad to see this is normal.

What I’ve learned on my healing journey was listen to your body before anything . Yes you should still heed the directions of your physician or orthopedic , but listening to your body and altering your eating habits are key . I’ve been able to heal fast and almost get full bend of my knee sighing 3 weeks. I’ve been able to put slight pressure on my knee since week 1 . My pt doesn’t want me to push myself as hard I know the risk but I listen to the signs of my body aswell as the warnings of the system. Staying determined and motivated is key

Can we start bending knee right after ACL surgery? So let's say after 2 days after ACL surgery we start bending knee gently without pain. But it can be up to 30-40-50 degrees possible. The question is: won't it stretch ACL unnecessarily?! Won't it lead to ACL being too loose in the long term?

I am 4 months into recovery from a ski accident. I broke the ACL tibial spine with part tear to the ACL. No surgery required so far, the break is apparently the better option! Although initially more debilitating the recovery I am hoping will be easier. I am back at the gym resistance training, cross trainer and cycling. Dear Andrew, thank you for the interesting video. I am a student studying physiotherapy. At the moment I am in an internship at a rehab center and I am going to see a young man, who is 25 years old and whoes left ACL is partially damaged. It happened in August, when he was playing football and was kicked posterolaterally in his left knee. The MR-scanning showed a partial lesion of the ACL. He is employed as a social educator in an institution for young people, but football is his favourit hobby. He hopes to avoid surgery and even to recover so much that he would be able to play football again, but he is nervous about the outcome of the treatment, because he still has pain. He walks without a stick or crutches, and is able to climb the stairs, but you can see something in his left knee, if you look closely, as if he takes care of it. He cannot fully extend his left leg, probably because the VMO-muscle is not strong enough. What exercises would you recommend to such a man? Thank you.

Considered myself very active prior to injury. 35 years old but still strength training 2-3 times a week and playing rec ball twice per week. That’s how I actually injured myself. Looking forward to starting recovery and getting back to normal.

I had to revisit a summary of post op rehabilitation. I’ll be going in for my 2nd ACL repair. I’m a former professional ballet dancer and the first time around from injury to full-time dancing again took 6 months. My body is hyper mobile so strength training beforehand as you’ve mentioned in your video- definite game changer and something I’ve added this time around. Glad to see the surgery was a success. Thanks for the video.

I have to move super slowly and with help to get out of and into bed and I gasp and scream from pain without Percocet. I even had to use a bed pan last night. I'm dependent entirely on my mom for everything right now. I'm amazed that this man could walk and bend his knee so freely before surgery, but I guess I'm no where near being a professional athlete. I'm hoping despite this extreme pain it'll get better quickly.

@@seancarterx So when I tore my ACL back in 2015 I didn't know it was ACL and was misdiagnosed. First few days after injury knee was swollen and had pain when bending my knee. 1 month after injury I was limping but then it became fine in regards to regular daily errands. after a few months of injury I was even jogging normally and pain free but I knew something was wrong in my knee I felt it is weaker so I went to another doctor and they did MRI and it was confirmed as ACL. You can live with an ACL tear if you don't do sport activities even my doctor notified me that. But the younger you are when you do your surgery the better and quicker recovery you will have. Pre-surgery I was a bit overweight so I only did diet and exercises to reduce my weight so I can have better recovery and less chances of re-injury after surgery. Now I am doing well and feel more confident regarding my knee but still scared to go back to sports yet so I am giving it another 1 or 2 months til I go back to sports . @@icebox544 hi there... I completely understand that you feel nervous....nobody wants to go for surgery. But I can honestly say that I never had pain post surgery. When I tore the acl that was pain! Afterwards.. Nothing really. I used paint killers in the hospital and the first day, but stopped after 2 days. Everybody is different. I have a patella graph.... What are you getting? If it's hamstring that will be soooo much easier for recovery. My best advice... The quicker you can start with rehab the Better. On 4months I'm really doing anything in the gym! Besides running and jumping as my doctor is old school and Unfortunately I need to listen :-)..... Small victories everyday that's the key. On a mental and emotional side everybody's yourney is different, but on a physical side start pushing from day one ( listen to your doctor of course)..... I went from 2 crutches to 1 one crutch on the 2 week mark and My biggest regret was that I did not do it sooner. ..... In short... Don't be nervous... It's really not that bad. The worst thing tor me is the frustration of waiting 12months before I can go back to sport.. Please ask me if you any others questions, maybe may story can help. Good luck with the surgery! Go for it... Fix it, do 200% when it comes to rehab...... Focus on first getting range back and then power.. Very important..... Remember the good time before you tore the acl :-)

@@MrMagicR Thank you so much for responding! I am two weeks post injury and I just got cleared to walk on one crutch outside and no crutches at home. My graph is going to be from my quad. I don’t know if that makes recovery easier or harder than if it had been from the patella or hamstring. Good luck with your surgery bro, don't be too worried if you end up losing a significant amount of muscle definition, tone and size on the leg that was operated on shortly after surgery. I did a massive amount of prehab and I remember looking down at my leg's muscle that first week post-operation and seeing almost all of the muscle in that leg that was there a week ago vanish. I was off my crutches within 6 days and I was as mobile as I could handle and it happened regardless. It took two months of dedicated commitment to rehab exercises for me to get back the muscle that was lost, but I got there and it was very satisfying when you get it back. I guarantee you that if you wholeheartedly committed to rehabilitation then it's just a matter of time for things to return to normal, but if you get the operation and don't do proper rehab then you were probably better off not getting surgery at all. But I know you have got what it takes King, it's a long battle but the hardship and struggle is worth the end result.

I tore my acl and meniscus 11 years ago at age 60 while working on the job and had to battle with my employer (a local government) through the process. I was able to get the meniscus repaired but the Doctors and them told me at my age I wasn't playing pro football or going cross country skiing and was at that point in life that I would be just sitting in my recliner with my TV remote control so I just learned to adjust my lifestyle to get away without it and maybe I'm glad that I did hearing how much pain and difficulty others had after surgery. I torn 3 of the 4 rotator cuff muscles 5 months ago and couldn't function without having it repaired but it was much easier to recover from than I expected.

There was a PT that I hired forced me to do some stuffs like farmer's walk with 18 kg of dumbbell each side and lot of joggings at the fifth week of the recovery. Even though i had already warned him about the amount weight that he put on the exercise was too much and heavy and also before that I told him about every stage of the acl recovery and he was bragging about he knew everything knee anatomy so he didn't had to listen me. Til one day my knee was aching during the framer's walking practice, i stopped the training immediately and had a serious conversation about his knowledge of acl injury and that asshole confessed that he had no knowledge as long as experience in acl rehab, he didn't even no what was acl stand for. No words could describe the furious when i heard this. Right now is nearly 6 months after the reconstruction, and i'm gonna go to the hospital to re-exam whether my knee is ok or not. I know the pain of tearing an acl. I tore mine at 12 years old and at that time my growth plates were still open to much for them to do surgery without hindering my growth. So they had me do rehab for 3 months and then see where I was. Well after those 3 months I went back to playing soccer full time with no issues. During the 3 months of rehab I worked hard to get range of motion and rebuilding my leg muscles to adjust to not having an acl. Now it’s been 23 years later and I have zero knee issues or pain work full time on fishing boats, play soccer still and rollerblade often. I am one of the few I have heard of that can live a normal life without an acl and be so active. One thing that’s for sure is that my right hamstring(torn knee side)is 3 times larger than my left one. I asked doctor in high school why it was that way. He’s response was that my hamstring and calf work together to balance my knee from slipping like the acl is supposed to do

Good video! I am 8 days post op, done very intense pre rehab that helped out tremendously! I’m a gym rat and also a physio so rehab is not a problem. Progressed to one crutch today, doing my exercises 2-3x a day. Stay consistent people, ice regularly with elevation+ankle pumps to push fluid out.

Hey thanks for the advice! How are you able to bend your knee? I tore my ACL and meniscus and I can somewhat move and bend my leg a little bit but doing a full bend or be confident enough to do workouts I can’t. Any advice?

I plucked my acl bone off tibia but acl was intact. I'm on my 9 month painful recovery. Did 2 months crutches, split on couch. Past 7 has been painfully exercise, stretches and learning to walk again. 88% helped up now, pain zero - one. I can run/jog now with no pain happy for that. What a Long painful recovery.! Quad accident.

Having surgery to reconstruct my ACL, MCL and LCL in just under a month, really nervous for the operation having lots of anxiety around it and also the recovery and how bad the pain is going to be, anyone have any tips going into surgery and after? Also currently doing physio to try and get full movement in my leg but I feel like I’m getting no where with it. If anyone has any advice or tips that would be super helpful! x

Hi, I also had reconstruction of both acl and mcl and stitching of meniscus. My pain was not that bad actually, but i have to be a lot more careful than the guy in this video. I stayed in bed for around 5/6 days and i still can't walk, probably not yet for another 6 weeks without crutches. So I'm definitely a lot more slower than this guy. Just make sure you have a brace to stabilize the mcl (i only had one after 1 week ). This makes you feel more confident to walk around on crutches and do exercises like bending.

@@saar1241 hey, thanks for the advice! Unfortunately they found more damage in my knee when operating as I also had a fall after the accident, the pain was horrific if I’m being honest and I couldn’t walk on it for a good 3 days but I’m now 3 weeks post op and getting better every day, really noticing a difference still on crutches though. Also I wore a brace before surgery but was told to keep it off after surgery but when I’m looking to get back into the gym and my sports again does I knee compression help? I’m unsure if to start wearing one for those activities or not Thanks ! x

@@laurenwheeler2420 Hi, I´m also 3 (and a half) post op right now, what a coincidence! About the brace, I have to wear it because my MCL had been reconstructed so it's for stabilizing while walking. When you go back to sports, you could wear a knee brace too, the one that is less rough and more elastic, though this would limit your movement but could make you more secure while returning to your sports (mine is football/ soccer)

Had 2 done on my left knee, 1st was hamstring graft that failed, 2nd was BPTB and that has been solid. My MCL was repaired 5 times before it was eventually reconstructed and that is a different ball game! Good luck everyone👍🏻

I had my ACL torned playing soccer and did the surgery after 2 months after like 1 month of rehab. I'm now in the 3rd week after the surgery. I was able to walk without crutches after I got back home from surgery and drove my car after 2 days. used crutches for like 4 days when I go outside. I actually didn't have much pain. The worst part is that I vomited like 6 times after surgery due to the side effects of anesthesia. I had to keep my eyes closed all the way home and as soon as I opened my eyes I vomited again. But luckily it stopped after a few more hours. Now I am able to walk normally but some stiffness is still there. Working on my exercises now. I think the doctor and nurses did a hell of a job. Still, a long way to go to get back to playing sports. Hopefully everything will go well :)

Thank you for this! I am on my 6th week post surgery and I wish I had seen this at day one. I thought it was me. The first week was horrendous and I simply wasn’t prepared. He thought mine was a partial tear, but it tore completely off the top bone. Evidently that makes recovery longer for some reason. I was on crutches- 50% weight bearing- for a whole month and I am still locked fully extended. I just began starting to bend it in PT on week 4. This has been very difficult psychologically as I hobble around unable to walk normally and get back to my normal routine of taking my dogs on long hikes in nice hilly terrain. Thx again.

This is not an accurate representation of the recovery for the majority of people. All this video does is make other people feel bad about their own journey and convince people that its okay to be doing things right after surgery that they should not be doing.
