The word Mall comes from "The Mall" at Buckingham Palace and Pall Mall so it's very British. The Americans say Mall meaning a Shopping Mall whereas Aussies usually call that a Shopping Centre. In Australia a Mall generally means a street with no cars primarily a place for walking and window shopping.

Finished up settling in Adelaide, a great lifestyle, great beaches, a city that is easy to get around. Great weather, very mild winters. It's just a great place to live , and of course some of the best wineries in the world .

We did a road trip to Adelaide from Melbourne just after you left. Stayed for a week in Hahndorf, now travelling home along the coast. We love the city… it has so much charm and character, and so easy to get around. Could easily live there, but my life and family is Melbourne.

Charlie and Rob, my top tip for visiting Adelaide would be to go on the dolphin cruise, early mornings. You can choose the boat ticket, or the swim ticket. I think you get the best views on the boat ticket. The company is called Temptation Sailing, the catamaran leaves from Glenelg, marine biologists guide you on the three hour cruise. (Doesn’t run during winter, book first.).

An interesting fact many may not be aware of is that when Colonel Light laid out the city he kept defence in mind, The parklands around the city were one cannon shot wide, the four Squares (Light, Whitmore, Hurtle and Hindmarsh are one Cannon shot from the parklands, and Victoria Square is one cannon shot away from the other squares.

So glad you love my home city of Adelaide…I’ve stayed at the oval hotel…it’s really lovely and you have breakfast overlooking the oval…really special. Next time, maybe go up into the hills if you’ve not been there before. You can go to Mt Lofty Botanical Gardens, Cleland and Hahndorf…which is really busy, packed with tourists on the weekend. You can go strawberry picking at Beerenberg at Hahndorf. There are loads of wineries too. It’s about 20 minutes from the city to the beach and 20 minutes from the city to Hahndorf but to go north or south is longer. Thanks for posting this. 😊

There is so much going on in Adelaide, and surrounds. It can be quiet if you want it or you can go out and about nightly to different venues". Adelaide is by far the best city in Australia and one of the best in the world. I’ve been to 40 different countries always loved coming back Adelaide. I hope we never become a republic I can’t think of one republic in the world I would want to be like. We know we are better off as we are. God forbid that we should turn into the US of A, we don’t have high streets. There are heaps of restaurants You obviously didn’t go the whole length of the mall. Lots of little cafes and restaurants.

There are hundreds of restaurants in Adelaide, just venture into adjoining streets! Gelaterias, ristorantes, pizzerias, etc. I’ve eaten at many of them during my GP trips in the past, before they moved it to Melbourne. Adelaide is a mini version of Sydney.

The shopping centre, such as the Myer centre, city cross and others are where you'll find a lot of restaurants. Also, if you carry on further down rundle mall, you'll reach rundle street. And that is absolutely full of restaurants and places to eat.

That building you are referring to is not on top of the older building. That yellow modern building is behind the colonial structure and not on top of it. However, yes they did add a modern section on to it but rather beside it and not on top of it.

I used to run regular day tours from Adelaide..before I moved to Thailand..I may return to do it again...In one day, we visited Mt Lofty, i spectacular hills drive, Hahndorf for 75 minutes, Victor Harbor for lunch , a walk up the Bluff, A winery stop in McLaren Vale and sunset or summer evening at Maslins Beach viewpoint (Spectacular), variety not possible in many other cities in the world...

The 20 minute rule tends to apply to East to West traffic.If you go North or South to the outer suburbs, it will take you probably more like 45 Minutes, but heavy peak hour traffic can increase that slightly. Adelaide is often thought of a very large country town because of its accessibility and easy travel time for a lot of the City.

When Adelaide got the "20 Minute City" reputation it was completely accurate, but in the last few decades with increased population and expansion of the suburbs, the time has slipped a bit it is probably more accurate to say it is the 30 - 40 minute city now.

I first heard of the phrase "20 minute city" back in the 80's and it was pretty much true you could travel to most suburbs in twenty minutes then except for the rush hours. You certainly can't say that today.

Interesting fact. King William Street runs through Adelaide from north to south for several kilometres. Intersecting streets don't continue with the same name, which can be a bit confusing for visitors. This is because city planners decided that "no-one crosses the King" !

Adelaide was named for the Queen consort at the time. Victoria was the future queen,. There would have been a lot of interest in the British monarchy. After George 111 and his mental health issues, the regency and the short reign of George 4, short reign of William 4/ 4 monarchs within 35 years . Certainly big influencers of the day. queen Adelaide was well loved. We were told in history class that she was instrumental in keeping William in check to get him over the time needed for Victoria to be old enough ( to not need another regency.) If Victoria’s mother had taken over spas reagent she would have been heavily influenced by her Svengali like advisor. Who knows how things had turned out. We, thankfully, will never know.

Just a footnote. I drove from Craigmore to Sellicks Beach one day. It took me an hour and a half. If you’re not familiar with the layout of Adelaide. That’s going from a very North-Eastern suburb, going south until the hills meet the gulf. It’s a good distance. That was before things like the Port expressway etc.

May sound odd, but Adelaide is a kind of mini version of Los Angeles. Flat plane suburbs but with out freeways, the foot hills to the east, the linear beaches on the west side, although no Mexican culture. City evolved from farm lands, grapes, fruit orchards and more. Plan is guided. Mediterranean climate. The tram from Glenelg typifies and exemplifies that red car romance of LA’s past. I could go on with this. I’m proud to say I was born here 😊

We are the city of churches but their are more pubs than churches. We use to be able to get anywhere in 20 minutes but our population has grown so travel time has increased. If you live North you don’t tend to go South. You can get to all the places you need to go within 20 minutes.😊

Americans call shopping centres "malls". We call the open plaza like shopping precincts - a Mall. Brisbane has Queen Street mall, Sydney has Pitt Street mall and so on. And with some of these mall's there are arcades and mini shopping centres on the sides if you look carefully. And you'll find restaurants and cafes in some of them. While online has grown a lot in Australia especially during covid, I guess we do still like to shop at the shops. We're an outdoorsy society, we like to get out and about. We don't like being inside all the time. I've heard that market is really good! Nice vlog guys. Keep 'em coming!

I've never been to Adelaide but the more I see the more I want to visit, the market is very famous I think I would spend a heap of money there. Malls in Australia seem to be a shopping street where cars are not allowed here In Sydney we have Pitt Street Mall in Melbourne they have Burke St Mall. I worked on George St in Sydney's CBD for about 10 years and the rents were crazy high resulting in a high turnover of businesses they were working all week just to pay the rent and wages most new shops were lucky to last 6 months Great video guys you should work for the Australian tourism industry

The history of the word "mall" has less to do with shopping centres or high streets than is realised. The name mall comes from a 16th Century Italian game that resembled croquet and was played in alleys. The Italian name was pallamaglio ("palla" being ball and "maglic" being mallet). The French adopted the game as "pallamaille" and in 17th Century England it was adopted as pall mall. The alley in which the game was played became known as a mall. The street Pall Mall in London was originally one of the alleys. The Mall in London between Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square is also so named because it was once an alley in which pall mall was played. When interest in the game waned the alleys were refashioned into landscaped and tree-lined places for promenading and socialising. The National Mall in Washington DC is an example of this. By the mid-20th Century the word "mall" began to be applied to other outdoor spaces, including shopping malls or shopping centres. The obvious connection between the original use of the word mall and its more recent use is in the reshaping of public spaces for socialising and recreation - hence most Australian cities and towns that removed cars from their major shopping streets renamed the spaces as malls (e.g. Pitt Street Mall (Sydney), Bourke Street Mall (Melbourne), Rundle (Street) Mall, Adelaide , Queen Street Mall, Brisbane because without cars the spaces were expected to become more social. I seem to be in the minority, (I'm South Australian) but I've always felt that the Oval redevelopment is only 75% complete. To me the Cathedral end missing a stadium is like missing jigsaw puzzle piece. I know its because the scoreboard is heritage listed and cannot be touched. But I wish we could somehow incorporate it.

Amazon Sydney & Melbourne have 50 acre robot operated logistics centres plus smaller sites across the cities. Am tends to be a bit pricier than shops. Nearly all my purchases are online e.g. food and o/s from USA, Germany, Croatia, UK recently. Cities used to be a lot smaller with light traffic so speeds were higher. Now even on weekends Melb is a huge traffic jam. High immigration killed it. Country towns are booming as people escape.
