G.F. Handel: "Joseph and His Brethren" (BBC, 1959)

Here is a BBC broadcast from 1959 of Handel's oratorio made available through the BBC Transcription Service. Anthony Bernard leads the musical forces in this performance featuring Helen Watts in the title role, with Alexander Young, Alfred Deller, and Jacqueline Delman. (The entire listing of musicians is in the opening credits). Sadly, there are some significant gaps where there is a loss of audio, but the overall performance is there and is of great historical and artistic value.

So much more beautiful than the early music versions. How did beauty become optional for the early music musicians and singers? I am tired of bleating countertenors, throaty sopranos and tenors, and scratchy-sounding instruments. I much prefer this version to others we have.
