As someone who grew up during the Star Wars era of stiff-armed lightsaber fights and laser duels with next to no possibility, I can't emphasize how revolutionary the O-Ring Joe's felt as a kid, despite some other manufacturers/lines having touched on it before. The combination of poseability, accessories and cool designs, meant the schoolyard hype for these was pretty tangible, despite not having a cartoon/comic immediately at launch. Vala needs to stop saying 3.75” is a niche scale and no one is making then. There are hundreds of them coming out every year. There are between 1500 to 2000 Reactions and its not slowing down. Almost every major company has a line of some kind. Hasbro is supp returning to the scale in a big way given 6” is getting out of hand pricewise. That’s what the Ghostbusters line is about. Its a test. Vala is too closed minded on this topic. Its frustrating given he seems to be in denial. He’ll never be convinced because he doesnt want to listen. There are thousands of the damn things that have come out the past few years. I know because I have a whole lot of them. Also Im not talking about just o-ring. I mean the 3.75” scale in general. He seems to think 6” is just better no matter what. If the price is similar im going to get the one i like the best scale be damned. If its a nostalgia or retro line thats going to heavily tip the scale in its favor. That can go for a 6” fig if its a retro card like Classified retro or Black Series on a classic card back. Ill take a Dime Novel Legends old west figure from Chicken Fried Toys any day of the week over a 6” figure that looks like everything else. Making these “dated” figures with modern tech has nothing to do with how it feels. Last time i checked plastic is plastic. Isnt that right Bobby? That’s what you like to say when the online plastic salesman give you a hard time in the comments.

😂😂 not like i worked on both scales and know the industry. Oh wait, I should be listening to an armchair quarterback KZbin comment. How many 6” figures are coming out vs 3.75/4”? The difference is 10 to 1 by far. Pretty sure that makes it a niche scale. How many figures does Dime Novel put out? Not many. Bet you if he switched to 6” they would sell more. AWOK as terrible as they are, even moved away from the scale. Boss fight as well. But you seem like you know the ins and outs of the industry so I should go with your expert opinion. Jazware's 1/18th-scale Halo line had a good run (probably failed eventually due to way too many identical Master Chief figures in his _Infinite_ armour in each wave and the general lukewarm reception of _Halo: Infinite_ itself), and Hasbro's more kid-focused Marvel and Star Wars lines are in 1/18th-scale as well (as are those cheap action figure sets that Walmart and Toys R Us sell), so I don't think 3-3/4" action figures will fade away any time soon (for more high-end examples, check out what Hiya Toys is doing, or Joytoy and their immense and constantly-expanding Warhammer 40,000 line).

This scale is great for vehicles down the road (or fitting into existing ones of which there is no shortage). And even if you don't figure those in, this scale allows you to collect more figures and display/store more of them than bigger figures. I'm also waiting for Longbow, and hope I don't have to wait long for them. Picked up the Super7 Reaction + and haven't quite decided on those yet. 6 inch doesn't appeal to me at all because it is bigger, takes up more space, and won't display with my older stuff.

Most of the big, kid-centric action figure lines currently on shelves are in 1/18th-scale, which means that that's the scale that the next generation of adult toy collectors are currently imprinting on and will gravitate towards when they become adults with disposable income. _Eventually, the nostalgia train will dry up just like the 12” GI Joes._ 12" is doing fine. They are pricey figures but they’re still around which means somebody’s buying them. Maybe it’s the Asian market. Joe is a Chinese company I believe. They have great vehicles also. They even make historical figures such as the three kingdoms.

I like Bobby Vala and I'm so thrilled that someone hired Mark "Honcho" Weber but he's being a little silly. There was a reason GI JOE figures were 4 inches tall and that was so they could sell kids an affordable vehicle. Business wise Hasbro wasn't in the action figure game, they were in the vehicle game. They practically gave the figures away at practically cost. The profits were all in the vehicles. They used stickers instead of paint and had the consumer assemble the vehicle cutting the labor costs to a fraction of their competitors. With inflation today a 3-dollar figure in 1982 would be equal to about 10 dollars today. The super-articulated figures of today cost way more than that to manufacture.
@ToyAttics3 ай бұрын
I’m not sure you made a point
@josiahalcorne3 ай бұрын
@@ToyAttics Yeah I guess I was rather unclear. My point is he acts like the 1/18 scale is dead and only a niche product and that o-rings are a niche with in a niche, when the reality is that action figures as a phenominia the way they were in the 70s, 80s, and 90s will never be a thing again. GI Joe wasn't an action figure line. It was a vehicle line that included figures as a way to encourage vehicle sales. It's like a movie theater doesn't make money showing movies, it makes money selling concessions you consume while you watch the movie. Mcdonalds doesn't make money selling Big Macs they make money selling french fries. Gas stations don't make money selling gas, they make money selling cigarettes and food at a huge markup. The highly articulated figures spend so much money on design and tooling that there's no difference in the cost of a 1/18 scale figure or a 1/12 scale figure. but there's still a huge difference in a 1/18 and a 1/12 scale vehicles. 1/12 scale vehicles are too expensive to sell to kids. Unless you're marketing to kids, your toys are niche and your fanbase is dwindling.

I think it's too late now. Especially since 6" GI Joe Classifieds are established now. If 3.75" was readily available when classified started then I'd have gone with 3.75" like the original because of the space, lower price, nostalgia, and vehicles are core to GI Joe (I'm not into 6" + scale vehicles). You can't compete now with near if not over $20 O-ring figures (super7) when 6" ones are a few bucks more and scale with Marvel Legends for example. It would take a huge push with affordable vehicles to compliment them, and the figures need to be too cheap to make sense now a days. EVEN THEN in a perfect storm it's still just niche to an older audience. Would it really be expensive though per figure for Hasbro to give us the true to original form repro GI Joe's? $10 - $15 each? Like how playmates is doing TMNT repro

The comic seems like an afterthought because it is. Or more specifically - a preceived obligitory part of 80s multi-media style Toylines. New cartoons, movies, and comics may do something for an IP in general, but have nothing to do with selling vintage based figures. Whether existing characters or an entirely new Line, the draw here is the style of figure. The other stuff can work as well, but would be part of the fun - not essential to understanding or marketing the brand. Even if the comics/cartoons/movies were done flawlessly, they would still be directed at those that already elected to collect the Lines. If other media somehow managed to pull in new audiences that became interested in collecting the Toylines, O-Ring usage would be a non-factor.

You’re saying that comics and cartoons don’t matter? That’s not correct at all
@solar_ikwla3 ай бұрын
@@ToyAttics I did not say they never matter, but comics or cartoons made in 2024 are not going to drive interest in collecting figures that are O-Ring or 3 3/4 Scale as opposed to a different style/scale if they are not already into it. If collecting O-Ring figures is already niche, the demographic of those who need a push from other media to decide if they like sculpts must be miniscule.

@solar_ikwla3 ай бұрын
@@ToyAttics Even if the toys themselves are perfectly suitable & enjoyable for children, these are targeted directly middle aged collectors. The comics & cartoons would be also. It might be a different story if a company aims directly at kids or a multigenerational audience straight away with O-Ring usage as the stylistic choice for the Toyline. The examples here do not come across that way at all. Even if there was success in bringing the kid/multi-gen markets to those brands - there is no reason to assume Comics & Cartoons would directly lead to a preference for O-Ring action figures.

I think having just been 12 minutes in one guy is wrong- but mostly about the line he didn't mention so his thoughts on that might be different. Starwars 3.75 scale "the dead scale" I think Joe is similar to TVC as it has a huge back catalogue of vehicles and figures that match a little- or a lot depending, but when you move into Six inch.. you can make all the characters.. but beyond smaller vehicles you aren't going to sell mid sized or larger vehicles. Just look at the Snowspeeder or Tie fighter from starwars which sat on shelves.. awful picks imo, they should've gone with at least the X-wing and normal TIe rather than the new one.. but still those sat in stores and basically killed a lot of retail stores wanting to keep big vehicles from Hasbro. Only now 3.75 vehicles from Hasbro are coming back through pulse (E-wing) and Haslabs.. Joe is gonna be similar unless you want to rely on Haslabs for Six inch vehicles exclusively.. and no USS flag will ever be made at six inch scale LOL though i doubt a Flagg could be made today.

Female characters don't sell well to boys under 13 who most of these toys where made for in the 80s-90s... The boy doesn't want to play as a girl and if you do get the girl figure- you only need one because you only have to rescue one girl not a legion of them :) As a collector based toy not made for 4 to 13 year old boys- female characters sell fine because most adults don't really play with toys they just display them or make dioramas or whatever

If Super 7 doesn't do toon versions of characters that were done in the 80s then the line will fail. I don't have the old O-rings anymore and having a toon accurate version would get me in versus only characters that haven't been done. They should be able to mix it to do both. Sadly Brian has stated the same so I haven't bought any of the new Wave 1 yet and won't until I see more classic characters and if they don't, then I won't get any. I don't buy 6 inch as I can't do $300 vehicles and Hasbro isn't doing the cartoon so I have no interest. Super 7's Ultimates are too pricey and that line seems to be in limbo already. For the other O-ring lines, I have zero interest as those aren't GIJOE as I don't care about military figures, its the IP of GIJOE that makes me interested. Time will tell but I am very worried about it as this is the closest we've come to getting cartoon Joes.
