Personally, I have to put '84 at the top of my list, if for no other reason than the introduction of Spirit and Storm Shadow. I share your thoughts on the ninja craze. Even as a kid, I thought that the rivalry of Spirit vs Storm shadow in the Revenge of Cobra cartoon miniseries was *WAY* more interesting than Snake-Eyes vs Storm Shadow. (Side note: I always saw Snake-Eyes Ninja as a retcon to his original concept as a commando).
@DestroIsMySpiritAnimal10 ай бұрын

I'm realizing, after watching this video, that most of the figures I owned came from the '84, '85 era. After that, I have no idea about any of them. For me, when you talk G.I. Joe you're talking about the best years of my childhood. From collecting the figures/toys with my then best friend Alex Lee, to running home to watch the latest episode of the original series. That was from about 1982 to 1987. Sadly though, the summer of 1987 is when all of that would have to be put up. That was the summer of transition from 8th grade middle school to freshman year of high school. My friend Alex whom I had known all through elementary and middle school lost interest in both me and the toy line, and so I guess it was time to move on and "grow up". But I will always look back on those carefree days fondly. Trading figures, talking relentlessly about the show and hanging out and playing with my buddy Alex. Good times.

My favorite toy, by far was the Night Raven. Yes, it's basically the SR-71, but I had never seen the plane before that (maybe, I was very young), and I fell in love with the design. It managed to improve on the beautiful Blackbird. I just always liked the designs of the bad guys better. So, most of my stuff was Cobra. I never knew anyone who had a Flagg. I don't know where I could put that thing. My biggest toy was an AT-AT. I was a Star Wars kid, and then Transformers. I really only got into GI Joes figures in the late 80s. By the 90s I outgrew them but still kept my favorites. I have fond memories as a child playing with them. Compared to Star Wars, the toys were built better. You could pose them in ways you couldn't pose Star Wars toys. I had this story of these characters all getting sucked into this other dimension where they would need to get along, form alliances, or bad guys fighting bad guys for power. The bad guys never able to pick a leader and were always fighting amongst themselves. Quite complex storylines for a kid.

'82-'86 best and original era. once 87 hits, it started getting weirder and suddenly everyone had side rockets and neon colors. That was my final year, I finished the POW storyline with Outback in the comics and that was pretty much it.

The best year for me was the 1986 line when I got the Tomahawk helicopter at Circus World in 1988 and Terror Drome at Toys R Us in 1987, respectively. By 1988, it was already VERY difficult to find any discontinued 1986 figures or vehicles. To me, they're much more authentic than the 1988 line (exceptions being Iron Grenadiers, Hydro Viper, Warthog, Desert Fox, Hit & Run, Storm Shadow). I did get the Skystriker, MOBAT and HISS Tank in 1983 but was only 3 years old at the time and didn't appreciate them as much until I was older in 1987, 1988. The smell of the toys walking into a Miami Florida Zayre's, Service Merchandise, Sears, KayBee, Lionel, or Toys R Us in the late '80's and seeing hundreds of action figures displayed. I will never forget the nostalgia. I preferred collecting Vipers like Techno Viper, Hydro Viper, Tele Viper, and Viper. Beachhead, Wet Suit, Snake Eyes, Mainframe, and Flint were easily my favorites on the Joe team.

Never a chance for me in a million years to get the Flagg. Still remember them being in the toy section at Sears and thinking "who is going to buy that?" It would be $600 today. American Girl Doll money ;) In hindsight we definitely had the lower level vehicles. Water Moccasin (1984) and C.L.A.W. were my personal favorite vehicles. Storm Shadow's sword backpack (1984) was insane and Cobra Commander V3 (1987) was best CC. Barbeque (1985) was great, having an axe as a weapon which was fun. Nice for when the O-ring breaks and the figure splits in two anyway, BBQ did that!

1984 by far. Baroness. Storm Shadow. Zartan. Hooded CC. Firefly. Recondo. Duke. Roadblock. Ripcord. Spirit. Mutt. Pick any carded fig at random and you have a really fun, intriguing character. ‘85 was great, too. It has several individual figs that are better than anything in ’84, but overall less consistently awesome. It helps that I was 8 in ‘84, the prime age for engrossing in GI Joe.

As you said, Serpentor and Mindbender were way more interesting in the comic, and iirc, we were first intro’ed to that storyline via comics, so we were stoked when the toys later came out. Not just Star Wars, GI Joe, He Man and Transformers... but properties completely forgotten - like MASK, Dinoriders, Centurians, Robotech, Silverhawks, COPS, Thundercats, etc., etc. PS - That aircraft carrier was a thousand dollars in the 80s. I remember staring at it at Toys R Us for $999.99. lol I don't think most understand how much a grand was in 80s money. as a kid of the 90's its kinda sad to see all the hate for the 90's figures....most of the time ive noticed the collectors that hate the 90s are ones that are too old to remember these figures or just never gave them a chance 1993 was the best selling year for gi joe in the entire og run...beating out every other year that says something right there

Agreed! And if you were a 10 or 11 year old in 92-93 like me not only were these years great but the nostalgia is there for us now as 40+ year olds. I do like how he gives props to the cobra earthquake and the DEF line in this video.

4:28 To be fair in regard to Scarlett. She's a Counterintelligence Agent who knows several martial arts and uses a crossbow pistol. She is an OG G.I. Joe ninja by definition of what a ninja actually is. A real ninja was a spy who knew martial arts.

My favorite year is '85...as someone who loves the troopers/soldiers army building you got Eels (my favorite figure in the whole line) Snow Serpent and Crimson guard. Also was a huge fan of the Dreadnoks so Buzzer, Ripper and Torch were staples in my play time.

Thanks for this video, I really enjoy it. In Italy Joes arived with a big delay (maybe '87), series was mixed and not all the figures and vehicles were imported. First time I saw it was in a little toy shop near Venice: there was the Flagg displayed over the entire shop window. My mom bought me my first figure: Shipwreck.
@rocketimpossible51963 ай бұрын
Great video! I think Big Ben and Red Star were the last decent figures. The last great figures were Bullhorn, Freefall, and Topside in 1990. My all time favorites were Night Viper (89), Shockwave (88), Tunnel Rat (87), Jinx (87), Falcon (87), Iceberg (86), Beach Head (86), Dial-Tone (86), Dusty (85), and Lady Jaye (85). The best years were 1986 and 1987, to me. I had the Tomahawk, Mamba, Night Raven, and the space shuttle, and they were the best vehicles ever. Good times.

Finally someone mentioned Shockwave! I felt like I was taking crazy pills when ‘88 went by with no mention of him. He’s probably my favorite for whatever reason. (What am I talking about? His load-out was frigg’in awesome, and he had a commando/masked-man vibe. Of course he’s the bestest!)

So many memories. I remember when they came out in '82. Star Wars was never the same for me. I would put '82-'84 over anything after, but to each his own. Every year had their gems up until 89 for me. Snake Eyes V3 was the last figure I ever bought as a "kid," and even then only because it was Snake Eyes. Think I was a sophomore or junior in high school. All my child hood Joes were gone but I still wanted that Snake Eyes. Now at 50 I have every Joe that I loved as a kid carded, and complete including the original straight arm '82s. My mid life crisis lol

87 was a phenomenal year. But still heartbreaking how very few of those figures made it into the cartoons. I wanted to see a dark psychological episode with Crystal Ball and Slaughter fighting with either Big Boa or Croc Master. Outback and Crazy Legs became my favorites out of the whole lot.

1984 for me. Getting the Whale for Christmas was the highlight of that year. I peaced out of GI Joe after '86, but started picking the line back up around 2002 with the Joe Night Attack Chopper (For me, it was always about the vehicles). I also remember when swivel-arm battlegrip came along. Local Toys-R-Us had the non-upgraded figures for like 99 cents, and we got a lot of the cobra troopers and such that day.

1984......Best details on vehicles and the Cartoon was most believable. I was in middle school in 1982. I still have most of my file cards. That was pure magic, especially having a parent who was in the military. The worst year I would agree was 94 but it to me really started before then when they started doing the tiger Force I was done. When they released storm shadow and zartan it was unbelievable. I saved my newspaper money and bought them immediately. The cobra rattler having dog fights with the sky striker.... By the way, which spawned one of the coolest GI Joe comics of all time. Also you left out in the comics the g.I Joe yearbook which was a big deal. It let you knew what figures and toys would be coming out for the next year. Last thing I'd say is I agree with Firefly being the boba Fett of g.I. Joe. I got him for Christmas, He was just cool as hell looking and I loved his equipment. Didn't have too many lines in the cartoon which made his character as you said more mysterious.

I wonder if the ‘92 line had dinosaurs due to the upcoming blockbuster of “Jurassic Park.” The idea of world-building is rather hilarious though. I mean, Serpentor? The crocodile man? That Globulous dude? Totally believable! The military troop utilizing a mute ninja? Who has an arctic wolf as a companion? Sadly, ‘Nam was totally hot, hence the US’ failure there. Worthless nitpicking aside, great video. Loved the trip down memory lane. I loved the Rolling Thunder growing up, along with the black jet from that year(?). And I seem to remember another space shuttle type vehicle, though that could be 30 years of cobwebs in my mind.
@DestroIsMySpiritAnimal10 ай бұрын
it doesn't have to be 100% believable, just believable within the rules it sets for itself. They start off with lasers and JUmp packs, so we know we're not in the real military-- and Serpentor was a stretch, but I could go with it--but the Bio-Vipers and mega marines crap breaks the rules it sets for itself. In my opinion anyway. Yeah, I think they released the top part of the Defiant as its own thing and they also had a few more space vehicles. Cobra had some too. The early cobra shuttle was pretty cool

I really enjoy your videos. I am a G.I. Joe fan from way back in the beginning in 82 as a kid. I agree that the early years were the best when the Joes were only a little sci-fi and more military-themed. I lost interest in the late 80s when the Joes started to become too weird. I do hope that Hasbro will give us all the original 13 Joes in the the Classified line. I would love to see a more deluxe version of Breaker with more accessories, even though the RAM mototcycle is cool as hell. My favorites Joes are Airborne (Franklin W. Talltree), Doc, Ripcord, Wild Bill, Grandslam (Not sure why, maybe because he is always kind of forgotten), and Topside (He was more of a simple character that I liked).

Airborne (Franklin W. Talltree) was always my favorite Joe. His figure was so detailed, in my opinion. The picture on his filecard was awesome. I was annoyed when the Sky Patrol figures were released in 1990 and they re-used the Airborne code-name for a completely new figure. I guess that I am just picky.

85 was when figures hit critical mass with pose-ability also. And while Zartan, since his conception, has been my favorite character in existence. Remembering Destro's release puts 83 at my top. His comic book cover, the commercial....and the fact that the first store in Chicago to get him was in a junky amusement park. It was like my first rite of passage...or a holiday, to get Destro. I made my mom take me out of school...haha.....I love that memory...old hot dogs and flat Pepsi on the tilt-a-whirl waiting to get the next Darth Vader...but new. and for me. ...........also I hate ninjas...including Snake Eyes..... Rock n Roll is my shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
@DestroIsMySpiritAnimal10 ай бұрын
Zartan is a great character, up there with Destro. Cmon, how do you hate Snake Eyes? Although Ninjas get a little tiring
@nihilistgelo10 ай бұрын
Okay I like Snake Eyes the commando up through issue 21. But he was absentee in the cartoon or they just made him a clown because they weren't paying an actor to voice him. He became a ninja when everything was a ninja. There were ninja cops and ninja pancake makers and ninja vcr repairman... Plus there's 127 thousand variations of his action figure. It just gets old and every time new figures get announced I'll be danged if there's not a new Snake Eyes...a ninja one. I mean if you're going to get ridiculous on him like he was Batman make Pirate Snake Eyes, Toxic Snake Eyes, various Flag Colored Snake Eyes, Computer Toner Telemarketing Snake Eyes.... Even in the early eighties I used him as an extra Cobra soldier to kind of even up the numbers. Ha. His gimp mask was more appreciated as I grew into my teens but look at that boring unpainted action figure from 1982 and tell me it's cooler than Rock n Roll...ya fibber.
