Online Japanese Carpentry Course through Real Construction⇒www.kickstarter.com/projects/1911438091/online-japanese-carpentry-course-through-real-construction We are building a Japanese carpentry school in France. We will document this entire process with drawings, photos and videos, and make it an online course so that everyone can learn about Japanese carpentry in English through this real construction project. We will use traditional Japanese techniques and construction methods, and use local materials such as wood, stone, and soil to build the most sustainable buildings possible. We hope you enjoy our carpentry learning materials. Let’s enjoy woodworking together!

For those who wish to try this type of hand-cut mortising, I would suggest that before using your chisel to make the mortise cuts, you start by using a marking knife to make deep lines just inside the drawn lines on all 4 sides of the mortise that is to be cut. This pre-cut method gives the chisel a true guideline and keeps you from chiseling to close to the 4 drawn lines. In this video, the craftsman depends on another piece of wood as a jig for making the final chiseling, a method which I do not recommend unless you first anchor the piece of wood with clamps to keep it from moving as you cut, something this craftsman does not do, which is not a dependable procedure for accuracy. You will also note that this craftsman cuts a 1" square mortise through the wood for the insertion of a square holding peg. This particular way of binding the wood is both time-consuming, unnecessary and totally disregarding the fact that the same can be done much easier, more quickly and more accurately by using a brace & bit to drill a 1" hole and use a round dowel in place of the square peg. For the purist, both methods are the same, inasmuch as both holes are completed with exact era type hand tools.
