My western ear has taken a long time to understand the guqin but with this piece I can really appreciate the playing techniques and enjoy the tone and melody. slow down, and find peace inside. Combine with Chinese calligraphy, Chinese painting, Chinese game Go and Yin Yang, will help understand GuQin better and easier, they are in the same paradigm.

The trick to most Asian (especially classical Indian) music is to hear the micro-tones (steps smaller than a Western semi-tone). It takes practice and focused attention. Those tiny shifts that sound "weird" or "off-key" to Western ears are actually subtle melodic variations, and sometimes, exquisite new harmonies. The richness, depth, and mastery there to discover are truly astonishing. Happy listening.❤

It may not stir the emotions or prompt dance, song or foot tapping but in my opinion it can be felt and enjoyed for its texture of sound and tonal purity when you understand the nature of the instrument and its playing disciplines.
