All it takes is practice with the goal of taking command of the instrument in every way just as you would if you were studying bassoon, oboe, flute, violin....etc. Both musicians had very good control from pp to FF with beautiful sound. Sound was homogeneous bottom to top. Bravo!

To be honest the bassoon sounds like a alto saxaphone and a rock guitar mix and the contra sounds like a deeper version of the bari sax

This works quite logically, the contrabass has its own similar raspy sound, so every sound transfers perfectly to the contrabassoon. Lovely idea, and a good way to show off an instrument that has little rep of its own

This was beautifully played. The tone was amazing. I play bass clarinet and clarinet, but ever since I started to learn bass clarinet, I’ve gravitated to lower sounds. I used to like higher pitched sounds, but now I pretty much like every lower instrument sound just as much. (Piccolo, and ridiculously high notes on clarinet are a different story. They lowkey hurt my ears. 😂)

Chapeau, excellent performance, it can't be done better! I appreciate your playing, the sound of your instruments very much. Could you imagine to play this music with contraforte instead of contrabassoon? Contraforte might be a little louder in order to match the sound of the bassoon.

I loved “the classics” all my life..now 80 years old, and never heard of a contrabassoon !! I love it, don’t tell me “you can’t teach a old dog new tricks” . Did Beethoven (my favorite) score the contra, or is it the conductor’s choice? Notice horns (French) and bassoons play together. Explain, please ! Well done the video ! 😀

I play the contra and there's a lot to admire. Getting the trills up in the higher register is tough, somewhat easier on the bassoon. That is darned tough instrument to play, but I love the deep throaty notes of the contra.
