I was at sick kids hospital while this was going down. The ventilation system in the building closed to the outside in case any irritants made there way inside. My parents also needed a police escort to actually enter the building. There were people there specifically to destroy property and cause chaos. Even at a young age I could tell most of the people were the ones considered "odd" in school. In my entire lifetime this is the only protest I can think of that got out of hand, the scale of the event had drawn people from all across Canada and America. These people didn't help clean up the mess, or donate to those who had suffered. They were just anarchists who saw an opportunity and took it. It was amazing seeing so many people outwardly condemn the destructive behaviour and come together in the following days. I still remember the viral clip of looters in an Apple Store being stopped by a local who threw the stolen goods back into the store after stopping a thief. I like to believe that man represents the majority of torontoians. However naive that sounds.

People mostly don't like anti riot officers, not really the cops. Though resentment agaisnt figures enforcing authority has always existed. People, especially the downtrodden, do sometime resent the police. And social activists dislikes anti riot because well, they are the ones trying to control them and often suppress them.

The purpose of anti-riot is to break down a riot, on most occasion the purpose behind them is to intimidate protesters away, and arrest the more violent individuals. A plan is usually to fracture the riot and take down those considered 'leaders' to then make it go back to an ordinary state. It is legal to protest, so long as there is some knowledge to the authorities before-hand so that they can send officers to make sure a political protest does not get out of hand. Many officers today are trained in social grounds and community building, so it is uncommon for riot police to be needed, unless the protest turns violent. As you saw here, police cars were already broken and there is damage to public property, hence fourth they were necessary. People dislike the overwhelming force because they cannot beat that overwhelming force. They forget it happens in any riot unless the government itself is inherently corrupt. We can always take the example of our favorite historical reference on the internet and in debates; Germany. When Adolf performed his 'Beer Hall Putsch' which was his first attempt to take power, he did it in the form of a riot. How was he stopped? Taken down by riot police in the German Wiemar Government. The number of protesters were 2,000+ approx and they used weapons, with the intent to take down a government. The Riot Police? 130. Now there are cases of riot police being used to assist in the aims of the government, hell, using the same example, when Adolf got out of jail and wrote his book (Germany was in it's golden age at the time until 1929 when it crashed down due to the Wall Street Crash), and then took power through political means, he then used the police to impress authority. But thanks to those 130 officers at the time; they managed to put the dictatorship on hold for a while longer. Overall, you would be able to tell when the police are acting out of order. There are 'corrupt cops' sure, but there are also 'corrupt protesters', both of which seek to profit from their position and don't care about the end goal. To label an entire group of individuals who's duty is to protect and serve as foul, (I saw some comments saying 1 in 100 cops are good. Are you kidding me? Why would they want that role for corruption? Prison Wardens can get off with higher power fantasies, or even being in the army. By the same logic, the people who are there none lawfully must, by definition, be lower. What are we talking: 1/1000? 1/10000?) is unfair to do so. And even then, some of the police may even agree with some of these guys politics (Ding Ding, welcome to a free country) but might have the job to, oh I don't know: pay the bills, feed the family, gain social status, keep the house, have a life? Or even, as most officers do and I believe chose the role for: "Protect and Serve". If they protect their community, then that helps them too. You would know if the police were being dictatorial: -This is a country that allows guns quite openly; yet they still resort to tasers, pepper balls, riot shields and batons, sticking to intimidation tactics and otherwise respecting their human rights -They let the protesters sit on police cars -They let some strange chick blow incense around. If it was as dictatorial as people thing, it would have been a gun slam and then be shot in the head on the floor for dissenting. By all means, protest and dislike something, but don't blame the riot police when they show up to protect their community who have to go to work in their now broken car just because someone does not like something someone else is doing, which has nothing to do with you in the the first place.

KaiserlicheDeutsch I respect your opinion but I still think riot cops can be deployed unnecessarily and this starts fights because they're geared up for war and are often sent to peaceful protests, also ive seen several incidents where riot police have used their weapons poorly or unnecesarily, e.g. on youtube there's a video (I think from the G20 riots) and one protester is hit in the head with a gas cannister and several others try to lift him up and out of the area, and one riot cop sees the group lifting him up and flashbangs them.

Cops beat them while on ground. "they fled the scene" and "resisting arrest" is what they put in the official report. Multiple cameras show that just a lie. No cop punished.
