Great summary thanks. On the one hand Google are trying to push long term UA users on to GA4 with an upcoming deadline. On the other, when users finally do move to GA4 they tell them to use fewer charts and share reports with fewer people. Are the two halves of the Google Analytics comms department actually talking to each other?

if you ask me, it's 100% a money grab by Google. They have the marketshare for analytics platforms, but they don't make money on the majority of it, so they changed something to make more users customers by forcing use of BigQuery, GA360 adoption due the paid solution having 5x more GA4 API calls, or using an in-between such as Google Canvas (surprise this has a recurring cost as well).

I agree to a certain extent. With the new Looker Studio Pro offering they’ll need to create more of a differentiation between free and paid offerings. I do think it’s a bit brutal doing it this way. After all, Google Analytics accessed via the Analytics website doesn’t have these restrictions, just for customized reporting via the API. So it’s not like Google has totally crippled everyone’s ability to access analytics data for free. Another point to remember is that there are a whole bunch of connectors for GA4 that are third-party and accessible directly in Looker Studio. Google doesn’t get paid for people using those (as far as I’m aware).

100% agree this is a money grab which also confuses me as they don't have that large of a market share for BI visualisation tools. Tableau and Power BI beats Looker in terms market share by a mile. If people have to pay then they might as use some of the other tools.

Hi Adam, does this quota limit problem still exist? I mean around 4 months ago I had this problem then I had to build the data visualization using BigQuery. But now, it seems the quota error is no longer appear. Does they increase the quota limit or what?

It’s strange, I experienced the same thing recently when I noticed that I was able to load full dashboards and run loads of queries without hitting the quota limits. I did eventually but nothing like when the limits were first introduced. They must have increased or relaxed the limits somehow. I still wouldn’t fully trust it and Google could press a button and it goes back to like before. I think using BigQuery or another third-party service is still the best way to go.

What is my incentive to keep working with GA4 (with its cardinality issues and the issues with google as a whole in Europe and Schremm) and now these issues in Looker studio. I am now seriously considering to just quite the google suite and migrate to a more privacy friendly organisation 🤷‍♂

Google Analytics is free and gives quality data that can help you track website activity. It’s just a little harder now to work with that data effectively. I do understand people’s frustration about changes made without any warning.

@@LearnBI There is nothing 'free' about GA and the rest of the google suite. They get a shitload of data. If I migrate my stuff to another analytics and visualisation tool I can guarantee we'll also migrate our advertisement to another platform.

If you don’t pay any monetary value for something it is, by definition, free. Of course they receive your data. I’m sure you knew that when you started using the service. If you feel the trade off is no longer worth it then that’s definitely a valid point and entirely your decision.

@@LearnBI Yes of course, and I expect a service which at least offers me enough value. As said, with all this shenanigans it doesn't anymore. 🤷‍♂ Google is already at the losing end in Europe. Pulling these kind of tricks will cost them a lot over here.
