@@pastramirants3896 Lee didn’t take off his weights in his fight with Dosu, or use anything beyond the 1st gate, AND Dosu was saved by his comrade on Lee’s Lotus attack. Gaara was not only able to survive Lee going to the 5th gate(or 6th, can’t remember), but he managed to take the match after. I also wouldn’t call their match close - Gaara pretty much shrugged off everything Lee threw at him and just gets up and walks away while Lee is literally broken. That in and of itself should’ve been enough to make Dosu think twice about this idiot moment lol.

For sure, though their deaths served a purpose to the plot. In Dosu's case, we got to see a veiled glimpse of Gaara's true power, which hadn't been revealed to the audience up to this point. For Hayate, we're able to discover the coup de tat to invade the Leaf Village and the cunning wit of Orochimaru's second in command. In Hayate's passing, we realize that Orochimaru's men are a lot smarter and cunning than at first realized. In defense of other points though, I will say that these deaths, in particular, Dosu's were not executed very well. Kishimoto had built up Dosu to be a rather perceptive ninja who was very conscious of the importance of knowing the strengths and weaknesses of their adversaries. Therefore, it doesn't follow really well, that he would just openly approach Gaara in the middle of the night to kill him. This kind of falls in the face of logic. In the face of what it means to be a ninja. The primary tactic of a ninja is deception/manipulation. It would have made more sense for Dosu to set something up, whether a trap, etc. to kill Gaara. At least, after gaining more info on him. It would have made more sense to do that after having faced cursed seal Sasuke in the forest of death.

Look at the Akatuski, the Kage, Madara, Hashirama etc. Dosu and his team were weak in the Naruto world, so Kabuto didn't need them. He wasn't a top spy for Orochimaru either, him and his team were used by Orochimaru and once he didn't need them he threw them away like nothing. The Sound 5 were above Dosu and his team and they were weak too.

This was so out of character for Dosu, he was the type of character who was very methodical and never walked into a fight without analysing it. This is a perfect example of how Kishimoto writes some of these characters poorly.

I honestly thought that Dosu was a lot smarter than this. He sure showed himself perfectly capable of thinking through a situation when up against cursed seal state 1 Sasuke. He knew the importance of booking it when the opponent was far too powerful. Shouldn't he have at least, have studied Gaara a little more before confronting him? I honestly think so. It seems to me, that Kishimoto just saw him as expendable for the sake of the plot.

People forget that back then, Dosu really felt like a focal point and one of the more important characters. For a side character, he received A LOT of development, similar to the likes of neji, gaara, kabuto and others. He saw through orochimaru's plan and decided to ruin it by attacking gaara, showing his high intelligence. Also he was pretty fucking strong, soloing rock lee and choji without breaking a sweat, with very unique abilities we've never seen before. I guess this entire sequence just goes to show how bad of a writer kishimoto can be sometimes, dosu would never go head to head with gaara in an attempt to assassinate him, he's way too smart for that, he would try to set up a trap or something, but definitely not like this. And yeah, I know kishimoto probably just wanted to show off gaara as one tails monster, but he had no reason to just kill of dosu. I feel like it could've been a lot better if dosu managed to barely escape this attack, that would show off gaara's abilities and also save dosu for further development.

But I disagree that lee would kick his ass without weights. Because if you remember, dosu literally just swung his arm once and lee was vomiting and bleeding from his ears, so dosu is pretty fucking strong in his own right. I'm sure a real fight between them could go either way

What I'm saying is that right after that attack, it was then dosu who could've easily killed lee if his team hadn't showed up. Thats why i said that both of them are very much capable of killing each other, and a fight between them would be very interesting.

I don't believe he's a bad writer, but he may have had pressure put on him to get the manga done in a set time according to some of his blogs in certain pages of his mangas. He showed how he had to go through many sleepless nights and it probably affects his thought process as he has said he spent a lot of time thinking about stuff Shikamaru could do which was why he didn't do much in the series.

(Or they have a really even fight)Sasori propably joins Deidara and they both win against Gaara. Noone rescues Gaara and Kankuro (if he tried to rescue his psycho brother) and they both die. ||| Its hard to say what would happen after since Sasori is alive and a few important characters are dead.Who knows what would happen to Hidan and Kakuzu. Either Orochimaru finds a way to weaken the Akatsuki and achieve his goal or Akatsuki didnt lost half of its members,and they achieve their goal.

I've never cared about Zaku and Kin, but Dosu was interesting. Kishimoto killed him because he didn't know what to do with him anymore. It was better this way since 99% of the Chūnin Exams cast became background characters later on. Neji, Kiba, Lee, Shino, Temari, Kankurō all became irrelevant in Shippūden. Dosu would have suffered the same fate if he lived.

Truly, if i were to re-write Dosu at least a bit he would secretly survive his fight with Gaara and spend the rest of the Chunin Exam in hiding. An we get a scene of him healing himself and realized how powerful Gaara's One-tail is like. He gets a flashback some years earlier, that not only he is smart and strong but he secretly wants too overthrow Orochimaru and become Otogakure new leader. However, he realized he is to weak by comparison so he wants more power and went into in depth research on the Tailed Beast. Orochimaru, knows Dosu wishes to overthrow him and gave Dosu a challenge to try to beat him. Which led to Dosu losing and beaten hard, Orochimaru then says he does not care how many time Dosu tries the results will be the same and tells him if he wants to beat him get one of the Tailed Beast for himself. Which gave motivation for Dosu attacking Gaara that night, so he waits and plans for a second chance to attack Gaara but this time he will be ready. During Konoha Crush after Gaara was wounded by Sasuke. As Gaara was making his escape, he ambushes him and tells Gaara that he has waited for this chance to defeat him and take the power of One-Tail for himself. So they fight Dosu managing to get a few good hits in going all out on Gaara an pinning him. As he is about to give the final blow, Gaara transforms into Shukaku catching Dosu by surprise and before he knows it Gaara attacks him with so much force Dosu could do nothing and eventually Gaara caught a wounded Dosu in sand and gave him a "Sand Burial" ending Dosu's story right there.

By this principle, the power scaling got a bit out of hand :D Shoulda slow it down a little to not end up with extremes like you mentioned. We can see throughout the series that a few years can do wonders on a ninja's potential. If someone like Ino can go from total fodder in Part 1 to pulling off decently impressive feats in the war arc, think about what someone like Dosu who actually showed potential could become. also sound is one of the most broken jutsu, there's a reason Naruto used the frog song against Pain during the invasion... That said I don't think Dosu would really be a good Akatsuki member lol.

Dosu is a classic case of what I call “Boba fett syndrome”; cool and mysterious character with a bunch of potential gets killed off after implying real significance, Imagine if instead of pointless filler episodes, they made filler arcs that fleshed out these side characters like Dosu, a much better and more entertaining / intriguing use of the intermittent episodes in between the big events plus his death seems out of character and he could’ve been an awesome / unique kind of ninja to see in higher skill level action

Now that you mention it, Minato's reanimation coffin was about to come out, but Hiruzen stopped it from fully completing. I wonder if Minato's failed reanimation had Dosu's corpse? We never see if Kin and Zaku were alive before they were sacrificed but, looking at their face expressions they appear to be surprised or well Kin has a surprised look while Zaku has a dazed look on his face. Poor team. I actually like them and wish they could've been spared and looked after by the Chunin proctors after knowing of Orochimaru's return to the Leaf village.

@Light Myst curse mark is senjutsu... Orochimaru uses senjutsu, just not sage mode due to his weak body. This should have been solved in boruto after he got his new body at the end of the war and absorbed kabuto's sage chakra, but we are yet to see him go sage mode so who really knows?

Clarification: in the manga Dosu waits for Gaara to go to sleep but gets tired of waiting and goes up to him. He explains that he wants to fight Sasuke and that getting rid of Gaara (because him and Sasuke were matched up) would give him a better chance of getting that. However he doesn't know about the One Tail inside him and gets killed quickly.

The way Dosu was killed off is rightfully trashed. But to the people that bring up it was stupid of Dosu to attack a jinchuriki, keep in mind a few things. First off, at this time in the series while people could tell that something was off about Gaara nobody except the sand ninjas knew he was literally a monster. Also Dosu intended on attacking Gaara while he was sleep, and was actually surprised to find that Gaara was still awake. While I think that even without the tailed beast Gaara would still trash Dosu, Dosu is still fairly strong in his own right so it’s not unreasonable for him to be confident about his odds against Gaara in a head on fight(without the knowledge that Gaara was a jinchuriki). If Dosu knew what Gaara was he would’ve NEVER confronted him. While I still think Kishi choosing to kill Dosu off as a plot device wasn’t the best move and Dosu deserved better as a character, the scene did accomplish its job by conveying that there was more to Gaara than what the audience already knew.

He did this with a ton of characters and not just in the beginning. Characters he started to develop and forgot about them, their peak moment was very early, they became fan favorites but never had another moment as good as that one. I'm not going to count fillers. Shino: Against Zaku, chunin exams. Lee: Against Gaara, chunin exams. Kurenai: Never. Neji: Against Kidomaru, mission to save Sasuke. Kiba: Against Sakon, mission to save Sasuke. Sakura: Against Sasori, start of Shippuden. Shikamaru gets a lot of development but the Ino-Shika-Cho formation barely does anything and it's supposed to be a big deal.

Dosu could have become a rogue sound joining the Leaf, cause he is the only one of his team who easily figured Orochimaru used them as pawn. By the way I still really think that Orochimaru plan with him at the end was to use him for Edo Tensei Minato, considering that Kin and Zaku were used for edo tensei Hashirama and Tobirama

I was actually planning on making a fan comic of these 3 on Webtoon. My drawing level is pretty decent. But I can’t at the moment due to life circumstances, but yea I completely agree with you-Dosu, Zaku and Kin had to be one of the most wasted characters in Naruto. They were introduced to us as if they were gonna be important players in the story and were given a lot of development as characters only to eventually be discarded and killed off in the dumbest ways possible. Dosu is shown to be a shrewd guy who plays it safe and analyzes situations before barging into them, even backing away from Sasuke in his curse Mark state when he realized he couldn’t take him on. But he decides to randomly pick a fight with Gaara in the middle of the night. And let’s forget Zaku’s dumb death. Apparently, he was able to blow away shurikens and even boulders but couldn’t blow away a few bugs plugging his airholes, and the funnier thing is that he didn’t even feel them crawling on his hands. It would’ve been cool if these characters realized they were betrayed by Orochimaru and fought alongside the Leaf Village during Konoha Crush, or if they were a third party in the fight to subvert Orochimaru’s plan in some way.

@@DetKashif the more you think about it, the more stupid using Zaku and Kin makes orochimaru's look. Why wasn't the edo tensei prepared in advance Alternative and better sacrifices: The grass ninja who orochimaru's kills and poses as for stage 2. The sand ninja who escorted the Kazekage The Kazekage himself, who's sacrifice would have erased all evidence of his assassination. The Forrest full of Genin who sign waivers saying the leaf isn't responsible for their deaths. Point is, you can't argue that Zaku and Kin wouldn't have been better served being placed on a team of ninja for the konoha crush. Zaku's wind style could literally make it impossible for projectiles to hit. And I always imagine Kin to be a sensory type as well as a Genjustsu user.

@@DetKashif there's a war filler episode that shows a different take on this scene. Where hayate comes back to life as a edo tensei. It's implied that kabuto set dosu up just to confirm Gaara's power. If that's the case. It makes him extremely stupid as well. How lucky kabuto was nobody was looking out a window. Or Gaara didn't lose himself to bloodlust and go on a premature rampage. It would have ruined orochimaru's entire plan. Again, there was no reason for kabuto to do this with a serious operation coming up.
