I had neuropathic pain in my feet that was horrible. It would often feel like someone was slowly running red-hot ice-picks and needles into the soles of my feet. I am taking Gabapentin for the same reason. I am considering going off the drug for two reasons. First, I continue to fight weight gain. The drug dulls nerve signals and I think it effects the signal to stop eating. Maybe I am just weak on the eating issue. Second, the drug makes me tired and sleepy. Was driving on a road trip recently and nearly drove off the road. I had other incidence while driving when it was a struggle to stay awake when the drive time was over 30 minutes. I may have to accept the neuropathy pain if I do.

I had a herniated disc pushing on my sciatic nerve most of last year, I have been on 300mg, 3 times a day until I had a microdiscectomy. My recovery has been extremely slow as I had a lot of scar tissue in my back pressing on the nerves for several months before I could get surgery. I still have plenty of nerve pain in my thigh and glute. I have returned to work recently and increased Gabapentin to 400mg, 3 times day. I’m 6’ tall, 210 pounds, I didn’t have any side effects with 300mg doses but felt quite drowsy when I moved up to 400mg but that side effect disappeared after about 2 weeks.

@@maryloumilligan9246 my doctor had me start at only 100mg, 3 times per day and that did nothing, then tried 200mg and no real improvement. Iirc, it took 2-3 days on 300mg, 3 times per day before I felt the effects.

@@anilshanker2674 you’re not supposed to have alcohol, but I did have a few drinks with the meds and it didn’t cause me any issues. Of course everyone is different though. Edit: one thing that I had noticed with gabapentin was if I took a antacids it seemed like the Gabapentin impact was lessened…. Then some googling and that’s indeed the case, they suggest you don’t use antacids within 2 hours of taking a Gabapentin dosage.

I have tried Gabapentin twice. Once for Carpal tunnel syndrome, and once for abdominal nerve trapped in scar tissue (adhesions). Both times, after one capsule only, I vomited for approximately 24 hours. No suitable alternative could be found for the Carpal tunnel, so proceeded (quickly) to have relevant operation. (Worked well, no problem since). The trapped abdominal nerve flares up two or three times a year, and the Amytryptyline works very well - usually. On two occasions, even maximum dosage only gave minimal relief, and the condition persisted for around 3 months. Interesting video.

I was told that Since gabapentin works when passing through the duodenum, it won’t work after gastric bypass surgery where the duodenum and upper small intestines are bypassed. Instead must take Lyrica.

If a resident asks for additional acetamenophen or ibuprofen pain medicine while taking neurontin, how do we explain it to our resident or patient?

If you are talking about residents, I assume you are asking about nursing home residents. Generally speaking the safer choice is Tylenol(Acetaminophen) in older adults without going over the 3g/24 hour dosage.Ibuprofen if especially if given long term should be avoided in older adults.If they do take it it should be given with food and have some sort of stomach protection. The more important question would be why is someone asking for additional pain medication.Is there another trigger for the pain, dosing compliance, is the frequency adequate, drug interaction with another medication( esp. calcium which would decrease absorption of most meds.We are always quick to uses meds and non-pharmacological methods should also be explores such as positioning, physical therapy etc.

This is the best thing for sleep for me. I have stenosis L4-5. I took 300mg at night for 3 months. After reading about side effects and withdrawal if you don't need it anymore, I am experimenting with 200 or 100mg at night. So far 200mg is fine for me. I hope to get down to 100mg. I have not seen any tolerance build-up from this drug. The 3rd-month dose was just as effective as the first dose. Many drugs have a great effect in the first few doses, then seem to be ineffective after that.

Gabapentin should not be used as a sleeping agent although sedation is a side effect.Discuss with your health care provider as she/he knows your medical history.Have tried Melatonin in the past?

I just started this medication 4 days ago. I have Polycythemia Vera.. diagnosed 2 months ago. The Gabapentin has reduced my leg and arm aching considerably and I feel a sense of calm.. euphoric almost. I’m very happy so far since I was prescribed Xanax when initially diagnosed with my blood cancer. I was scared! But.. I was as scared of being on benzos for more than a month. I am on 800mg twice a day,... if I forget to take it, It causes suicidal thoughts,.... I take it for PTSD. on it, I am sedated all day,...
