As someone who works at the YMCA I have to say that Gabby working there is honestly the best thing she could do for her mental health. The YMCA is a very open and welcoming space and very accepting of people with mental health problems, it's somewhere comfortable and each YMCA holds a small community of people you get to know personally. The YMCA is also majority older demographics especially for Zumba so she's able to be there without the constant fear or worry someone might recognize her and harass her further.

i don't like jason nash or (anyone connected to the vlog squad) but i think it's kinda weird how people don't mention how much david exploited those people. like his vlogs became merch ads at one point, he didn't give anyone a cent from that. he pocketed all money. if you think about it in terms of regular job... having a boss who has you make a fool out of yourself on camera, create a cult-like enviorment, and ... not pay you a cent. that's not normal. regardless of what jason is doing right now, the whole situation is fucked up. especially now that david flaunts his wealth in ways such as comissioning eyeball art. and natalie is in her girlboss era... i don't feel bad for jason cause he's a creep but it's still a shitty situation. going on tiktok live to beg for roses is fucked up ngl, but at the same time crazy that david did so many shitty things, including harassing journalists who wrote about him in negative light, sa, and causing someone to become disabled (let's be real, jeff's injuries make him unemployeable irl, i have serious retinal detachment going on and it comes with many limitations) and yet is living lavish as if nothing happened.
@CJAmara Жыл бұрын
I slightly disagree. During the height of the vlog squad, ALL of them were raking in cash. David was not paying them, but they were benefiting and they were all getting hundreds of thousands, if not millions of views on their own channels. Yes, David should have paid them and a good person would help their friend in need (David is not a good person), but they should have all planned for themselves. The expectation that the David gravy train would last forever or that David would sort them out was misplaced and short sighted. It’s sad to see, but Jason is a man in his 50s with children and should have carved out something for himself and maintained some sort of independence. But yes, David is trash. Jason is trash. All the vlog squad are trash.

Honestly, I don't really get the influencers who make big money not considering getting at least some valid degree from real universities. Especially if they actually don't come from already well off family with big businesses and assets and huge connections. Now that they're earning enough money to pay for a high education, they should have taken that chance (just as a backup plan or just to have a degree). Because for a lot of people who can't get a higher education, it's a matter of money and not being able to afford it. If I was earning that much money at a young age, I wouldn't be so stressed about going to uni.

You learned, achieved and acquired more in your first 16 years of life than a certificate from a school. You still have all that knowledge, and those skills. Sometimes we let arbitrary outside benchmarks define us, and while I don't want to shit on graduating from high school, there is more to a person than if they did or did not graduate high school. It was unfair to curtail your education. I am sure you developed a lot of life skills, and enormous personal resilience from your time at home that many kids graduating college don't have. Believe me, I hire these idiots, and some of them don't know how to mop a floor or change a rubbish bag. They are highly educated, well read, polished young people, but are effing useless at the most basic tasks. Frankly its embarrassing. I bet you know the value of a dollar better than these twits I hire. (I don't say this to justify taking you out of school, I say this to point out that you were still learning and developing skills, and that you don't have nothing to show for it). I spent most of my 20s lost, and it took a long time to get myself back on track, so I feel you. Just remember: you didn't FAIL high school, you were denied the opportunity. So don't carry yourself like it was a personal failure.

I feel like tiktok influencers don’t understand that their “influence” is minimal compared to any other platform. The fact that anyone can have a video go viral and get a bunch of followers quick is exciting and you THINK that 100k or even 1m followers is huge! Which it would be….on a different platform. There’s soooo many tiktok accounts who will get 300k followers in a week after a viral vid but then you look at their account, no one actually cares about their content unfortunately. Then on top of that since there’s so many micro influencers with inflated numbers, sponsorships get ran through so much faster than when there were just sponsors on KZbin and Instagram. TikTok basically speed ran its life and has aged the quickest out of any social media platform imo (similar to vine honestly)

I dropped out of high school, and I don’t regret it, however it was during covid when my public school was clueless, and I went straight into a college program that knew what they were doing with virtual classes, which allowed me to get a high school diploma. I then promptly dropped out of college in under a year of getting my hs diploma because I was struggling so much. (I recently found out my therapist thought I should have dropped out of college even earlier lmao. Academia is not for me.) There’s no shame in dropping out, but you do absolutely still need a HS diploma or GED for any sort of job. If traditional high school isn’t working for you, for the love of whatever you believe in, please look into getting a GED or into non-traditional diploma completion programs. If you don’t think you can afford them, there’s a lot that are specifically targeted at those in lower income brackets, as well as for people who are currently in the workforce.

These former/newly part time influencers are young enough to pivot into other categories. The other young members of the vlog squad mostly went to OF (not exactly an option for Jason). Then again, Jason has been working in entertainment in general for long enough to know that nothing lasts and that he needs a backup plan/savings for his kids. I also have to wonder why David has done absolutely nothing to help his former right hand man out. Based on how these lucrative snapchat deals work David could easily get Jason a good deal as well. About the Jason Nash interview: When he gets asked why he doesnt get a job the other host pipes up and says "its people with regular jobs asking that because they cant do what Jasons doing and theyre jealous." That is such a typical out of touch influencer thing to say. They always think everyones jealous of them. No what i think the audience is getting at is if Jasons struggling with money so much why doesnt he get a job which would be a stable source of guaranteed money. And Jason saying that he "doesnt have any skills" and thats why hes not getting a job is bs and just an excuse to not have to get a regular job. Most customer service jobs dont require any specific skills or experience. Him being an "influencer" for so long would actually help him to get a job like that cuz it would show people skills, not being shy to interact with strangers and overall good social skills. But Jasons not gonna do that cuz he'd think that a regular job is beneath him and would be embarrassing but i'd wager that begging for gifts that are literally equal to a few cents on tiktok everyday for 8 hours is prob alot more humiliating.

If you don’t have health insurance pray that you never get sick(I did this for 7 years), find a small cheap apartment to live in and accept it’s will not be aesthetically pleasing, no car will learn to walk, and sometimes you have to work 50-60 hours a week to just make ends meet(I also did this for a little while). I think we as every day people have learnt to accept all the bad and live with it in such a way that influencers are just not use to anymore. I’m sorry this is happening to them but I know they will figure it out and learn to be happy with the little, like we all have.

I also think the way videos are monetized affects it. Before adpocalypse there was at least a chance to make some money without having to work constantly or have a million followers. At this point it seems near impossible to be able to rely on social media without getting burnt out and exhausted.

This is also true, and as rates were so much higher. I could have probably supported myself at this size in 2015/16

The illusion that education is solely valuable if it is used for work is one of the tenants of capitalism I hate the most.

On the note of resume vs CV, though im sure someone else has already commented this by now. They are considered different things in English, resume is more widespread and generally only one page long whereas CV is more academic because it has space to list out any publications, research, etc.

The mature student thing might be unique to Canada. I have applied for college as a 22 year old and didn’t need anything extra as to when I applied at 18. Same if I were to apply now at 30. And there were gaps in my schooling.

I'm disabled and I was forced to drop out or university partly due to being stuck in poverty. If I had the wealth and privilege of the influencers who can simply drop everything to go back to school, I would do it too. I also understand that studying and finding work isn't equally easy for everyone.

I live in Australia and when I was growing up CV was used more often but these days they use resume (much easier to spell if you have to write both of them out in full). Was looing to confirm that I remembered that correctly and the site that I was looking at for that said that they were the same. Found an American site and for it CV and resume are 2 different things A resume is a one- to two-page document presenting key facts about your professional experience, educational background, and skills. A CV (Curriculum Vitae) is a longer document that details the whole course of your career. A resume is used for job search, and a CV-for academic purposes. Also found other sites that were saying that it depended on the country that you live in for which is used (it said that Canada was one that uses resume).

Real quick about returning to college here, in jc's case he wouldnt really have any difficult barriers starting college at any community college in la. Tons of people here cc's are about 24 and up. He would probably have more issues being a bit infamous haha Oh and we dont have any names or status per say that would require him to specify himself as anything other than a college freshman just like a high school graduate
@MikasRhetoric Жыл бұрын
Interesting I thought the systems were similar enough that it was the same process
@MCECRG Жыл бұрын
@@MikasRhetoric okay this has been a thorn for me haha! And I think there is something comparable between the systems. Im not sure about colleges or uni in canada, but here there are no dejure barriers to college because of community colleges but there absolutely are for Universities and if he wanted to attend a university he would absolutely have to apply as a special status but we call them "transfer students" because the only way into a 4 year is through community college, and there, the most you can usually attain is an associates degree but not all people attend community college for a degree or transferring so it is quite open. Though, there are specified community colleges with bachelor programs because of how inaccessible University generally is. And as a transfer student from community college to uni, you definitely don't start as a freshman and are a junior.

Good video. These "influencers" really thought they'd be able to make all this money for basically doing nothing. Well, the good times are over and these washed up influencers have no idea what to do next.
@Ypsilion Жыл бұрын
I think we are starting to see the consequences of what happens to influencers after they get burned out and lose relevancy. What I realized is that these "flop influencers" are mostly the first/second wave of influencers. They are "flopping" or quitting, and it's starting to show what's behind all the PR packages, influencer events, and big LA homes. It was very shiny at the beginning, only seeing the positives, but making them drop high school, college, or normal corporate jobs. Most of them didn't know how to diversify and grow their channels, which made them stagnant and finally burn out and/or lose relevancy.

On one hand, you have influencers who figured out that specific career path wasn't fulfilling. More or less that they had other options. Meanwhile, you have controversial influencers whose own actions led them to this point in their lives. I feel like with any career, a backup plan is needed. Or at least considered. Not all things work out the way you want them to, or make you happy in the pursuit.
@LifeOfTheAngels Жыл бұрын
a lot of influencer longevity is purely based on luck anyway, you would have to be EXTREMELY lucky if you’re trying to make influencing/youtube a full time career, its literally a freelance career and in most freelance careers you’re not guaranteed a consistent stream of income no matter how long you’ve been doing it, it’s just smarter to have a fail safe no matter what, like simplynailogical has been doing KZbin for a long time and she still works a government job despite having a multi million dollar business, but some of these ppl set themselves up for failure (the gabbie hannas and Jason nashes) bc they’re narcissistic weirdos
@MikasRhetoric Жыл бұрын
That’s why I’m trying to get a job with my degree despite still growing
@CJAmara Жыл бұрын
Simplynailogical is a very good example. I also think having a “regular job” keeps you grounded, allows you to maintain perspective and ultimately it gives you security that influencing cannot.

Also some of the things these influencers were known for just aren’t relevant anymore, some are able to make it work and some aren’t especially if it’s something that’s gone out of style, like gaming, commentary on niche topics, and book content are in, and society has simply evolved past the viner, content house, hyper edited, vlog style content; beauty is about to become less relevant in a few years bc of how problematic the space has become (and capitalism), it’s just a sign of the times constantly evolving and shifting interests

I would prefer to see Gabbie apologize, simply because of how viciously she treated so many people. But if she were to apologize to those people privately, I think that would also be fine. I'm glad that she seems to be doing better, I just wish she would have taken accountability for her actions. But maybe that will come in time, who knows. But I could do without the people who defend her and her actions all the time.

42:35 if she truly retired from being a public figure, I don’t think she *has to* come out and apologize. At this point she’s nodody to us, just a regular person that doesn’t owe strangers anything. If that makes sense.

I think we also have to recognize that the younger influencers (like ones about to be 20) are the first young teens to have widespread access to a potentially high paying job. When i was 14 or 15, KZbin was just starting to pay people. The only jobs I could get were being a cashier, making minimum wage. Now kids can make thousands at 16, 17, 18 to the point they could support themselves. I really think the pandemic made online spaces so saturated that the value of influencing has dropped significantly. Which means influencers really are just making minimum wage except the ones turning 20 are the ones who don't have much to fall back on. At least some of the older ones who were around before influencing and stumbled upon fame either have job experience or education. Its really sad that influencing kind of bolstered a generation of devaluing education in combo with the crippling prices of higher ed in America. Tldr: a combo of unfortunate circumstances has led to young influencers having little job opportunities outside of social media

Yes this is also true! Like I have no idea how I would have managed money at that age
@mellybobelly369 Жыл бұрын
I think it's worth discussing how already having money (and one step further, having money to BURN) helps a lot with becoming a successful influencer. Alix Earle comes to mind, and that's no shade to her! She has clearly found her niche and is savvy with her content strategies, but her family being loaded absolutely helped her success... at least indirectly. Like I'm sure she never had to worry about rent or using her bf's car like that one failed influencer mentioned.
