what is so sad is that all these false accusations make it so much harder for real victims to see justice.

What sucks is neither side is in a good position to prove/disprove. A victim is unlikely to have a record of the event(s), and the accused is unlikely to have an alibi for a crime that might not have happened. You can't prove a negative.

i feel like the first step to handle allegation is to acknowledge that as viewer, it is not our place to judge nor our responsibility to punish. We are ignorant of the truth and incapable of clarifying the facts, we are an audience. The second thing we need to accept is, famous streamers are real people, therefore, serious allegation need to be acknowledged in the real world. This is particularly obvious in the kwite situation, he was accused of sexual assault, it is not something to be handled by channels like "tea spill" or "drama alert". Nor is it appropriate to work it out on Twitter. A good lesson to learn not only on the internet but in life is the fact that we don't need to participate on every discussion. Great video as always! hope you have a great week! (also a recommendation of a channel you might like, that has nothing to do with drama, ive been obsessed with "Final Girl Studios" movie analysis)

light correction: #TimesUp is the movement started by women in hollywood discussing SA and harassment in the wake of harvey weinstein. MeToo was started in 2006 by Tarana Burke, a Black woman w/ no initial connection to hollywood who was just advocating for regular people who had been victim to SA. There’s a lot of conversation surrounding how MeToo was sort of hijacked by wealthy white women with more social capital (who can still undeniably be victims of SA to be sure). While I do think all victims should get the platform to share their stories if they feel like doing so, I just wanted to slip in the little correction because Tarana really does not get the recognition she should for founding MeToo and it’s gotten to the point where the movement, it’s origins, and it’s intentions, are largely misunderstood by the general public. okay, on with the rest of the vid!

I value your commentary so much ❤️ the Kwite situation made me so upset that articulating how I felt was pretty difficult but I think you put your thoughts beautifully!! I’m struck by how fast people believed Orion’s allegations but in retrospect, the online community (esp Twitter) infantilizes trans men as society often does cis women and treats them as though they cannot be malicious-I think in some part Orion probably exploited this. Watching Kwite’s video and seeing evidence that suggests HE (or they or she) was the real victim, and hearing that Orion insisted to Kwite that “he wanted” that kiss, makes me frustrated, especially noting how quickly Orion, on their now deleted Twitter, began to publicly enjoy watching people turn on his victim. It’s a shame Kwite had to reveal so much deeply personal information because of a vengeful abuser. :/

Thank you for covering this with nuance and so much respect. I’m so tired of people coming out with false allegations with the intent to mess up someone’s reputation. As someone who has been SA’d, it is such a traumatizing/life-altering experience. People like this make actual victims feel so invalid and small. There’s already so much guilt and self-blame that comes with it. Having to come forward and speaking on everything takes so much out of victims emotionally. They’re making it so hard for victims to be taken seriously. It also upsets me that these creators are basically being pushed to expose very intimate details about themselves to prove their innocence. This is getting ridiculous.
@jadekurvo Жыл бұрын
i think a huge part of we're in hell's apology was the contradictions and deflections while simultaneously posing himself as someone willing to take accountability. in leftist communities, we're suppose to have full accountability processes with the perpetrator, the victim, and a chosen mediator (based on an abolitionist model) but its clear the communication was completely lacking with all parties after in the incident. the internet doesn't allow for nuance, but also sam isn't showing himself as truly ready to be accountable since he goes back and forth on whether he assaulted his partner, which by definition he did. the other situations seem to be very young people who have been introduced to an idea of "accountability" but are really seeking punitive consequences (public shaming, loss of platform) against someone who wronged them whether those feelings are valid or not. they're also conflating sexual misconduct and sexual assault, when the language should be very intentional to avoid false allegations. its messy overall and i think it really comes from a lack of conflict resolution and interpersonal relationship skills.
@jadekurvo Жыл бұрын
also, unfortunately having this discourse will result in the audience pivoting to not believing the victim because they only see it as "call out culture", and they center themselves as emotionally exhausted or whatever, when the focus should be on identifying the harm, rectifying the situation at hand, and transforming behaviors so it doesn't happen again..
@DanielleStarry Жыл бұрын
You’re so right about people wanting punitive consequences. I’ve seen people wondering why so&so or what’s-her-face not being jailed for what they’re being accused of or exposed for. It’s typically because nobody ever goes to law enforcement to report alleged crimes, and in the occasions law enforcement has been contacted, LE hasn’t been able to find evidence of a crime to prosecute. I understand why victims don’t go to law enforcement, but I wish they’d plainly state they’re only sharing their experiences because they wish to be heard.

honestly this was exactly my thinking on it for a long time, and while it still rings true to a degree, the Kwite situation did make me reflect on things: i think while the intent in it is good, it's a bit oversimplified and lacks some nuance. for example, IF someone WAS lying, what motive would they even have for that? it feels entirely possible that in some cases, the person lying IS the abuser, and so beliving their lies becomes far less benign when it's actually turning their own wrongs onto their VICTIM, which just sounds incredibly traumatizing even beyond what they endured initially. i think there's a catharsis in pointing fingers and demonizing people that is all too easy to indulge in online, and it makes some sense - when you cant undo or even really fix what someone has done, channelling strong emotions into condemning that person can feel like the only outlet for that energy. the internet is bad at holding space for complexity and uncertainty as it's really set up to dogpile and to push the most extreme takes people have. however, i think we (myself very much included) need to reframe what our choices are when reacting to a situation; we can "believe victims" by listening, providing support or helping them seek out resources that will benefit them most, and we can do all this without/before completely demonizing the person they've accused. sure, it's not perfect, and it takes effort to sit with those uncomfortable feelings without "acting" on them, but maybe it could help prevent more people's lives from being ruined. (not to mention, i question whether or not victims truly even receive the help they need when it ONLY comes in the form of exposing their abuser? sure it can help, but it doesn't address their trauma and their life moving forward etc.)
@Alexis-tx5en Жыл бұрын
I kind of agree with both these comments tbh, I’ll always lean on one side while also taking in the context and seeing what the accused has to say in their defense. It’s difficult since there’s plenty of people who clearly want to demonize women and don’t care who immediately assume most women are lying.

im so glad to hear someone go through the nuances of the we’re in hell situation as well as others. it seems like something that should’ve been sorted through in private, and i feel bad that all of these personal details were forced into a public spotlight. not saying anyone’s right or wrong, just that we’re human. we’re flawed, especially in our relationships. and it seems like sam is doing his best to be better in any way he can. it’s a lot and i dont want to take a side as i don’t know any of the people involved personally, all i can say is i hope everything works out with the least pain for all parties involved. maybe with the help of a therapist or something. all these allegations just make me feel bad for everyone because some things just dont need to be everyone’s business, yet at the same time it sucks that people feel the need to make allegations public in absence of a trustworthy and effective police system in domestic violence cases. thanks for your time and energy in this one girlie - it’s always well appreciated.

you always cover things the BEST way. you know you have personal bias but you still are very rational, logical, and easy to listen to. this is such a triggering topic and many people are simply talking about it like 'oh another evil false allegation towards a poor innocent man'. if someone ever asked for 'receipts' from my being SA'd, i wouldnt have them. because it's not a #metoo famous man moment lol, we're just normal people. i think regular people being put in the spotlight like this and having to defend themselves is a little bizarre. what you said about teenagers/young relationships really resonated as well. i talk to my friends and even publicly about my SA, but i don't name him because of things like this. it shouldn't be some sort of "who is right" game, imo. i'm seriously traumatized from what happened lol, but i see that as something between me and people i know. it would hurt if he was an influencer or creator, but i have no clue how i'd react or handle it. like, does everyone need to know all of these VERY personal details just because of that? not to me. i don't 'stan' or feel personally about creators. i don't KNOW them. people should be called out for things ofc, but like... a lot of allegations have become more "drama" than anything else, and it's harmful. i like commentary like your channel, covering topics and the nuances of them. not 'is this allegation true or not'

It's all spectacle under the guise of supporting victims, people act almost rabid at the smallest crumb drama. It's disgusting.

I liked what Charlie said in one of his videos (I think it was the Kwite one?) where he was talking about how he doesn’t like this idea that we just have to believe all victims, full stop, no questions asked, and instead thinks it would be better to support these victims while also being like I’d like to hear the other side. Obviously not word for word but hopefully that makes sense. Every story has two sides, but how is anyone supposed to understand what actually happened if you don’t hear both sides? You can’t go to court and be like this person did this, lock them up, and the judge is just like yes queen we got you, this trial is over. It just doesn’t work that way, but also I (hot take) think people need to stop pretending that internet allegations and responses/apologies are being submitted as evidence, like these apps on our phones aren’t an actual court. At the end of the day, who is any random person online, creator or not, to make decisions like that about people they’ve never met or even spoken to? (And really that goes for both the accuser and the accused) (But on a lighter note, stan Corpse Husband, stream under the weather)

The thing that exhausted me with the We're In Hell thing was reading all these everso pious comments from essayists I otherwise respect about how they are prison abolitionists and support restorative justice but in this case it hasn't worked because there was no accountability and so we've just HAD to go public with the allegations. And I'm like a) what did that restorative justice process look like? B) how has accountability been defined? And C) why does its failure necessitate public exposure? What is bringing this to the publics attention meant to achieve vis a vis justice? And I suspect the answer would fundamentally boil down to "well the good people will unlike and unsubscribe." And I'm like, why? Why should I? Why should I know any of this? None of these people are actual public figures, I don't know any of them personally, so how does my not watching his videos, which I enjoy, contribute to either restorative justice or healing? And how dare they bring in me, a stranger, and then impose their implicit judgement on my morality based on whether I unsubscribe or not, all whilst refusing to disclose full evidence, as one would in a genuinely open court, or even disclose what their justice system looked like. I refuse to be part of it.

In the case of we’re in hell, I interpreted his statement as playing defense against his ex coming out about abuse. I think it’s worth reading M’s account, as they characterize a completely different situation. For M (and for victims of abuse in general), I understand the need and desire to come forward-to have their story heard and make their community a safer place by warning others. Victims generally stand nothing personal to gain and face extreme harassment for speaking out. Abusers, on the other hand, can benefit greatly for speaking over victims and downplaying allegations, which seems to be exactly what we’re in hell is doing. (I say “seems to be” but obviously I can’t know-I don’t know these people and it’s not my place.) I don’t think people are going to stop making allegations public online, and I don’t think that they should. When prominent figures are abusive, it’s important to make the community aware, and I believe people also have the right to make their story known. But I totally agree the way we discuss these issues needs to change. This isn’t drama or tea, and whatever storyline we ascribe to the situation is, at best, incomplete-because we don’t know these people, and the information put forward is never the full story. We all need to make our own choices in who we support, and who we withdraw support from. Great video!!

I hope that makes sense. I've always wondered, what exactly IS the difference between these different types of communities?

But I think "they" was the best choice here because I think both "she" and "he" have been used in this context to either imply Chris is a man or overemphasize the transition (by which I mean that 2 months on HRT doesn't usually do much, and the rest of what Sunny sees as part of their transition just highlights how limiting masculinity still is for many). And I do appreciate your effort for getting the language right, it can be difficult for someone like me too, who thinks analytically and would expect some kind of logically consistent system of gender identities. Unfortunately complicated human things can't be reduced to that.

Kwite does zero moderating of his fans when they misgender said trans man, which leads me to the unfortunate assumption that he was a chaser. All too common among us in the trans community.

Is leftist commentary a category? I would call it empathic commentary, and as unbiased as possible commentary, but apparently those things equate you to being a dirty commie, so welcome comrade? 😂😂 You, and actually channels you mentioned are the only ones I go to for “drama” really. Y’all talk about the role we all play, and remind us these people have very real lives that aren’t always displayed as well. It’s more than just “here’s the drama and I’m on this side”. There’s very few channels that have the intention to have you think about it. I just babbled trying to get all my compliments out.. I hope they all came out as compliments and were understandable. Lol.

I'm just gonna not believe the furry art profile pics until the response is posted bc its always these random furry artists who come out about this and are thoroughly destroyed. I need commentary channels to just stop talking to these people.

Victims should NOT be believed. Accusations from claimants/accusers should be taken seriously and investigated. Calling claimants "victims" gives netizens permission to behave disgustingly vile to the accused and to influencers who cover serious topics like SA allegations. The mob loses all objectivity and they expect influencers to do the same or else you're "victim blaming." Calling ppl victims means that you've already assigned guilt and innocence so there's no need to remain neutral. It means ppl aren't really looking for the truth, they're just simply waiting for more info to come out that proves the bias they already have to be right. This mindset is why netizens ended up aiding Orion, an abuser, and harassing Kwite. I genuinely don't know how these ppl live with themselves but I bet they tell themselves they were in the right for believing the "victim." Believing the first person who comes forward with any kind of accusation isn't right and it never will be. We can still comfort and respect ppl while remaining neutral until there's more information.

@@-xirx- let's try this again. Marina Dove has a post on her Patreon that is public detailing her allegations against Sam. I don't know any of the background, who she is or who are any of the other people she mentions. It was... an interesting read, but I kind of skimmed it and didn't read deeply. I am NOT attaching a link this time because I think that's why I cannot see my other comment. The post is called "How the Left Loves Sex Workers" I only found out about this yesterday because The Leftist Cooks made a little jab at We're In Hell and under someone's comment asking for info they posted the link. I don't know what other controversies Sam has been in, I've heard their are others, but I'll be honest, I unsubscribed. I do think we, as viewers, have some interest in knowing what kind of people we give our views to, and I hadn't really been a serious viewer of his content for awhile. My own bias is the guy gives me the ick a bit and I trust my gut on these things now. ETA: I also only watched the last bit of this videos that is about these allegations because I was looking for more info and this is what I found.
