So, I'm a musician and a singer/songwriter just for perspective on where I am coming from, and I genuinely think this song is good. I think the delivery is unique and the rasp she's using isn't misplaced, it's really well incorporated into the energy and the mix of the song. I just wish she, as a human being, didn't decide to promote her music the way she does. I like the song, and if I didn't know who Gabbie was and this just came up on my Spotify I would immediately add it to one of my playlists... but I don't want to because of the way she has treated people and gone about the creation of this song. The song sounds so authentic and it's really a shame that the artist isn't.

As a singer songwriter myself too I mostly agree. It’s not my favorite but my taste is different. My expectations were pretty low ngl just because of her personality. I also like the rasp bit that she uses, I think however she might utilize it too much so I would tell her to hold back at times. Also she will blow her voice out if she isn’t careful. But otherwise I think it was pretty good. Someone said it’s a shame she doesn’t take constructive criticism; I hope she does listen to the actual constructive criticism because I think she could actually push it further and could become a staple for many.

As someone who’s vocally (classically) trained, I have such a huge problem with gabby’s singing. She has potential to be a great singer, but because she can’t take criticism, she’ll never reach that. The “raspiness” in her voice is intense straining, which is extremely harmful to vocal cords. It’s not edgy or cool, she’s literally destroying her voice and soon enough won’t be able to sing at all. She needs professional training to use the screams/raspiness in her music or else she won’t be able to make music anymore. Sorry to be so harsh but I’ve been following her music for a while and I’m seeing a vocal decline.

When I first listened to the song I also thought it was about how happy she was on the internet and now it's gone and I wasn't really into it. But during the third time listening to it I realized that isn't the case, in her ep "Bad Karma" their is a song called "Happy" which is her love song to Payton. But now they are no longer together because of people harassing him for being with her. So when she says things like "fought for me my angel" and "thank you for getting me through this" she's talking about Payton since he would stick up for her and defend her when no one else would, and without him she probably would have killed herself. That's why it's "Hat In the End" because it's the end of their love story. So once I realized that I loved the song!

This is what I think, and it’s probably superficial. It’d be cool if Adam looked into this, though. Maybe it’s conspiracy. Maybe not. Gabbie has been covering snippets of My Chemical Romance songs on her TikTok (before she deleted everything) and she’s also obsessed Bo Burnham. The music video of her singing in the bathtub was clearly a call to Burnham’s “Inside.” To me, this all seems like an amalgam. The vocals (even the parts that Adam said he liked with buildup into softness) remind me of that rock opera sound of “I Don’t Love You” from The Black Parade album. The music video is Bo Burnham again. Recording in her hallway… trapped in a room. Yep.

I’d also like to note that the video does a great job portraying the msg of the song. The video makes sense to the inspiration of the song how she mixed a date of a therapy session and she felt lonely, and sat on the floor basically crying while creating the song. The video embodies this. It shows her at her lowest and I think saying “crazy Gabbie” is back which is insulting for mental health and those who struggle. I think we put her on a pedestal that’s feeding into her state of mind. This is her artistic vision and she doesn’t owe us “so much more” when everyone shits on her for everything.

The rough screechy technique you were talking about I would call vocal fry- but people have different names for it. You create that sound by pushing your vocal cords together to get that friction- but it is SO EASY to overforce that friction and damage your vocal cords. That's a good way to cause blisters on your cords (nodes), which pretty much ended Julie Andrews' singing career. Gabbie pushes her cords audibly in the song, you can notice when it sounds 'intense' because she's straining. It's really frustrating because singing like this is so damn dangerous if you aren't educated in voice. Gabbie has had problems with oversinging in the past and I hate that she would rather be *dark* bc she's *not like the other girls* bc she has emotional *depth* than actually take criticism and training and have respect for voice as an actual discipline. Idgaf if you want to sing as a hobby but if you want to have a sustained singing career and do advanced vocal effects then you need to actually learn about this shit you don't just naturally know how to healthily place notes I don't care how talented you are.

I like the lyrics, this is definitely in the vein of "Total Eclipse of the Heart," but...this song is getting a lot of praise and I'm just not that into it. Her low register is in her nose and she doesn't have the breath support for it. She's straight up screaming bloody murder. There's rasp, and then there's being chased by Mike Myers...over a piano ballad? Everyone complained she was screaming on Monster, but how is this song nothing but? I can tell she wanted to be authentically emotional, but it sounded like she was crying and maybe needed to rally a bit for another take. This would be a good live performance? Eh, it's fine, but could have benefited by being cleaner.

While I appreciate her adding in the rasp to her voice, I think that she overdoes it in this song. I think if she limited it a bit more, like just having a sentence or two with it, it would be more powerful and emotional. It almost sounds like a gimmick as it stands now. Like she said, I need to add this as much as I can to show the true emotions. Instead, it comes off as forced emotions. Also, thinking about what you said with a video showing a funeral to her old self - I think she'd be straying way into the Taylor Swift zone, when Taylor released her Reputation album. Plus Taylor did the complete social media blackout before that album release. It's just a bit too close to Taylor. And with this video and song already being compared to a budget Sia video, I don't think she needs to be compared with anyone else.

I’ve noticed that people that have mental illness make the best art. I’m not saying you have to be mentally ill to make good art but there’s just some kind of correlation between the two. I watched a short documentary about an artist that kept a diary about his paintings, he ended up taking his life in the end, but his paintings were amazing. I hope she doesn’t die and I really hope she gets the help she needs but I think her song is really good because she’s using it to express the way she read feels so it’s really genuine. I actually feel bad for her and all the hate she gets because she might really not be help to help it. The sad thing about mental illness is it can make you not in your right mind and you don’t even realize it. I’ve been there before and when I think back on it it’s weird, like almost a whole different person and not me. I hope if she does get help and maybe apologizes people will let it go and not bring it up again.

I’ve had the song on repeat and I love it. I love gabbie’s music I just hope she’s ok and finds help and the support she needs so desperately. Everybody deserves peace.

I don't like the way Gabbie's voice sounds when she's singing breathy or low, it's very nasal. The raspy parts sound good but I don't think she has the technique to do it correctly (and live). The lyrics aren't very good either...

I agree I don't want to hear gasping for next breath.

I like rasp! And emotionality. Sometimes I just feel like she’s doing the most. Feel what you feel, but sometimes it’s predictably… heavy of commentary towards her own drama.

Regarding the music video.. I know you say you’re disappointed by it but actually I appreciate that it’s filmed at home without other people, because of the pandemic. The way that COVID-19 is treated very so much in the United States that even living in a different state has a different meaning in terms of how safe it is to go out and do things, even professionally in a person’s job. I’m OK with choosing to send a message of staying at home and minimizing external jobs that require a lot of people to be in person together. Maybe she’ll release another music video for this song in the future

I actually like the song except all the weird breathing in the beginning. If this was released by miley - I think it would be absolutely stunning and would be on my playlists for months. However that being said, don't care if Gabby made the best song of the decade - I just can't give this girl any sort of attention knowing what kind of person she is 🤷♀️

This song is honestly so beautiful, but the person singing it has such a toxic soul which makes it hard to separate the song from such a bad person. I want to listen to it but it almost feels wrong to enjoy what feels like such an authentic song, from such an unauthentic human.

I totally understand what you're saying about the raspy sound to her voice. I think it sounds really great.

I can't lie. I love her music. Like, literally love it. Say what you want about her (I'm not somebody who really ever watched her KZbin videos), but her songs touch me. I absolutely love every song I've heard from her. I say forget being a KZbinr, and concentrate on being a musical artist, because thats her calling.

This is a good example of me separating the art itself from the artist , she can make sing okay u can’t take that away from her 🤷🏽♀️

I actually really liked the video. This song was about Payton. Him & his family were doxxed and harassed to the point where she had to end their relationship. The song is a true representation of how it feels grieving a relationship. Anything more than what she did would of taken away from the meaning behind the song.
