Gabbie Marshall described her experience with lots of negative comments towards her after she drew an illegal screen against Aaliyah Edwards in the final seconds to help Iowa defeat UCONN.

Even spotting the ball in football isn't an exact science. They say that holding happens on every play. Things are just subjective in sports. So, it can't be said one way or the other. Edwards leaned and stuck her elbow out somewhat. Some will call that, others won't. It wasn't a typical screen. It was borderline. She knew what she was doing and hoped it would pay off. It didn't. Lots of people feel like the refs should "let them play" in the closing seconds of games, but how far are you supposed to take that? Are players allowed to get away with anything in a close game? The bottom line is that the refs were calling moving screen pretty tightly all game, so this call was both correct according to the rules, and not out of the norm for how they'd been officiating the whole game.

That kind of moving screen doesn't get called near as much as it should but it's important that it does get called towards the end of games. It was such an obvious foul, the ref had to call it. Every part of Edwards body was still moving laterally. She never did get set. And then she chicken-winged Gabby with her left arm and shoulder to boot. It was a great play by Gabbie and a critical mistake by Edwards. Hannah had moved into position to pick up Paige defensively after the screen anyway, so to assume Paige would have shot a game winner is wishful thinking. You have to wonder about the mental state of people who see this as the refs trying to determine the game in Iowa's favor. Caitlin was getting hacked and held almost the entire game. Red marks all over her arms by the 4th quarter from being constantly fouled by Muhl and UConn. That had a huge impact on the game in UConn's favor. Did you hear CC complain about it? No. No you didn't. Take the L with dignity, if you can, UConn. You had a great year and exceeded everyone's expectations. Don't be petty and foolish enough to blame the outcome of this game on one call. Paige refused to.

If Edwards doesn't foul Gabbie, Gabbie was going to be all over Buecker AGAIN the way she was the whole game. The play that was on was for the ball to be passed BACK to Buecker. So, without the foul, Gabbie is there to stop that pass from happening. Game over. THAT is why the foul HAD to be called. If you cannot win the game fairly, then you cannot win the game. The most important time when a foul MUST be called is when the foul might throw the outcome of the game. Otherwise, THUGGERY determines who wins the game. That was a good call. It's easy to blur the line on this. At every level screens are set, that player leaned into her and stuck her elbow out. You can lean into a player and get away with it. When you stick your elbow out, it's easy for the ref to see, and is called every time. The ref called it immediately, indicating that they were sure a foul was committed.

Arms were outside the body, impeded the defender - illegal. Initiated the screen too close to the defender, didn't give the one step of space - illegal. Yeah we've seen a number of other illegal screens go uncalled the past few weeks (mainly sliding feet), but this one was verv blatant with that many illegal actions. Even still, if she just keeps her arms inside her body position she probably would have gotten away with it

Gabby, the hate comments come from the heightened drama of the end of the game. Mostly UConn fans, I imagine. It was a foul! Long time college men’s BB Ref here. I have watched that play in slow motion several times, if the ref is looking at that area at that moment it would be dishonest to not call that foul. Gabby you were a star in that game, and that game should be considered one of your finest, and one of the best this year by anyone. Not many people can control Paige’s game like that. Think of it as a compliment to how the female game has been elevated so much in the last few years that this discussion is out there. Honestly those kinda calls got called on Iowa at the beginning of the game, she did make the call and also Paige bueckers said it herself one play doesn’t impact the whole game, the way people are able to blame one person and make them feel so bad about themselves that they have to delete social is ridiculous

You hit good shots and played awesome defense , as well as Katy Martin... You made me smile cause even though you guys were not the star...you were why she was... You played defens e , and followed your shots. I am happy to hear that you are going forward with what you want too. :) Just know that you have alot of peoples heart that didnt get the limelight, but you were seen!! Haters WILL Hate! It's what they do best, sad to say. The game was hard fought, the women did an amazing job on both ends of the court. The players should be proud. We need to STOP making excuses for every little thing that doesn't seem to go perfectly, life isn't perfect. Give credit where it is due, and stop being negative. These young women deserve to be appreciated and respected. Does the better team always win? No. Can refs make perfect calls? No. Do coaches execute perfect games? No. But when it is ALL said and done, we let it GOOO.

If you watch Iowa's games against any other college teams you can tell that Marshall plays very well & is a clean player who always try hard & verty dependable that's why their coach lets her play all the way & all the time. She's not only a supporting player that can also score anywhere anytime, she is also a very good defender with a wonderful personality...!!!

I played college basketball 50 years ago and coached for another 20. I have been a HUGE fan of UConn for 35 years, but it was clearly a foul against a great defensive effort by Gabbie Marshall. She celebrated after the call was made, and I was very happy for her and for Iowa. Great job, Gabbie!!!
