The commentary about last names is actually pretty relevant! My cousin changed her last name when she got married but then she’s divorced and was hesitant about changing her last name again because she was afraid it would mess up her career because she’s a scientist and it’s actually pretty useful to have all of your work published under the same name 😅 she eventually changed her last name but when she married for the second time, she didn’t change the surname anymore 😅

I kept my last name when I got married and you would have thought I killed the pope with how everyone reacted 😂 I have a lot of pride in the things I accomplished under my name and it just never felt right to trade it out just because I got married

One of my favorite things about Emily St. John Mandel’s books is how they’re connected to each other. Characters/storylines from Station Eleven and The Glass Hotel come up again in this book and she does in a way that is nuanced enough that they work on their own, but they really enrich each other at the same time.

I don't know if this is entirely accurate, but I'm pretty sure that the author in Sea of Tranquility is based off of Mandel herself, because it talks a lot about how one of her books got super popular and put her on the map, but then her next book didn't do as well and received a lot of criticism, and also living through a pandemic and writing a pandemic book (and that definitely happened to Mandel with Station Eleven and then The Glass Hotel)

I went back and looked at my review for Black Cake, because I ended up giving it a good rating, but I said the same exact things in my review about the fact that there are too many POVs and also how the similar names were confusing. Lessons in chemistry - There is a reason this book is a popular favorite - the humor in the writing. My single most favorite aspect of this book is the dog's POV, it was hilarious and unique, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am shocked that I don't see it mentioned by any reviewer. Elizabeth Zott is definitely a strong protagonist, no doubt, but I feel you are not giving the right picture on some of her perspectives, Gabby. Elizabeth's non-belief in religion and marraige, both, had much more to do with her childhood experience seeing her parents (a quack godman for a father and a mother who marries only for money), than to do with the fact that she is a scientist. I almost skipped this book based on your review, thinking this is one of those books that campaigns for a set of beliefs and ridicules anything contrary. Although Elizabeth and Calvin are vehement in their opinions, the book clearly explains and spends quite some time on their backgrounds of how their experiences of very difficult childhoods shaped their perspectives. Many of the feminist points this book makes on the plight of women in the 50s and 60s are irrefutable, nothing to debate there, a few of which such as taking the husband's last name continues to this day, god knows why, I didn't change my last name on marraige, never understood why anyone would.
@monicamoss347
@monicamoss347 Жыл бұрын
I understand the commentary on last names. And just because it is tradition does not mean you can't do something different. I have been married for 14 years. When we got engaged, we had a discussion because my husband did not want to keep his name (had his dad's name that he has never even meet). We discussed coming up with our own name (like a combination of our names) but in the end he took my name. This created a chain reaction on my family as my brother and male cousin decided to either take their wife's name or create their own last name when they got married. I think when people get married it should not expected for either party to change but discuss what each person feels is right for them.

That of the last names it's something that maybe need to be changed. Here in Mexico women don't give up their surnames but when they have kids, they have to put the dad's last name first and then the mother's last name second, but I think that now you can choose the order of the surnames, which is pretty cool.

So agree about the changing last name thing. My mom didn’t change her last name when she married so I have both my mom and dad’s last name as a hyphenated last name. Lessons in chemistry sounds like it has a lot of good points but that line about housewives being described as "legalized slavery" i scratch my head about because unfair as it is, I wouldn't describe housewifery as chattle slavery, where enslaved women were raped, forced to labor, ripped apart from their families, sold as commodities, & often tortured--all legally enforced and encouraged. I understand the sentiment but it feels in poor taste to me.
