This is a list of 11 things i stopped buying or spending money on. Minimalism has changed how i save money and some of my frugal habits. as i've cut more and more stuff out of my life including my kitchen table and wifi. I've taken that money and bought freedom with it, by vbuying investments that let me quit my job and now spend on things that bring me alot of joy and value. now you dont need to be as extremely frugal and save money the same ways i do but i hope this will give you some ideas of things you can cut out of your budget to save money money and get more happiness..
Thanks for watching!

My grandmother always said 'We are to poor to buy cheap.' when we went cloth shopping, so instead of buying a 5 € H&M shirt she would get me a 25 € high quality shirt. I didn't really get it until I realised I was still wearing a sweater she brought me 6 years after she died. ☺️

Instead of souvenirs I use to buy spices. A mix of dried herbs or something like that. And every time I use it at home when cooking I’ll think about the place and the people I meet on the trip. It’s actually a fantastic way to remember!

I have never bought lunch or coffee at work. Not in the 12 years of working at the same place. There are heaps of cafes and food outlets nearby but I know if I cave in one single time I will feel like I can do it again and again. This forces me to be organised and theres always a can of baked beans in my locker for emergencies. I'd rather have coffee and eat out for fun at other times and plus I dont have to waste my lunch break lining up and waiting.

We drastically reduced our home decor about 2.5 years ago when we re-did paint/flooring and I have not missed it all one little bit. Keeping it to a minimum not only saves time and money, it helps assure that only items I truly LOVE make their way onto surfaces/walls. If you're in doubt, pack away as much as you can stand to and put it away in the attic or basement (somewhere out of sight) for 60 or 90 days. Before you open the box (es) again, without spending more than a minute or two, jot down a list of what's in the boxes. If it's not on the list, you're surely not missing it! If it is on the list, did you really, truly miss it while it was away? Probably not. We get (loving) grief from friends and family all the time for not having a proper trash can in the kitchen. We just use a recycled grocery bag on the back counter as we have dogs. We have a dumpster outside and reusing small bags means a) we don't buy grocery bags at all and b) the trash goes out quite frequently, so it doesn't become unsightly or an odor issue. But man, some people act like we're NUTS because we don't have a proper trash bin! It's not as big an item as a table, but still one of those things we're 'supposed' to have that we just...don't.
@lindam7518

I use plastic grocery bags for my trash containers in the bath room and beside hubby chair. I use to use in our kitchen too but now have a larger container. When using the smaller one in kitchen it would be taken out every day.

I bought house in cash so I don t pay for interests, also using 20$ Nokia, without camera, internet etc. Battery last like forever... My phone cost is 5$ monthly. Also I still don t live in that house but my plan to take internet, but not flat rate, 60GB is enough, it cost like 7$ monthly. House have public water suply, but there is water well next to it, so I ll just connect it to my house, instead of 25$ for water monthly, it be 2$ for electricity used by waterpump. All lights are LED, all together 160 Watts. Heating is by gas, but if I use sawdust furnace heating costs will be minimised because sawdust almost for free.Behind house is almost acre of land, so lot of my food will be home grown, vegetables, chickens,eggs,fruit.. I also do my haircut alone, do my coffee alone on job instead of paying it, cooking alone...

Cable TV. Seasonal decor. To an extent- clothes. Any clothing I purchase is almost always second hand, and items that I have looked at and considered for quite a while before I decide to purchase. I've been a minimalist since I was kid. I've always had the smallest room in the family & my little sister would always get the bigger room just because she was a girl. Only had a bed, a dresser + hand me down clothes, a small tv, a game cube, and a small chair. Now I live in a 621 sq ft 1 bed apartment and it feel like it's too large for my needs. I'm seriously considering van life and just get rid of 98% of my stuff I've accumulated by having an apartment.

Had a stackable washer and dryer. When the washer was broken, just bought a bigger size washing machine. I hang dry my clothes on a foldable clothes rack, ( using hangers to hang them. In the summertime, I roll out a small dehumidifier; it really helps to keep the extra moisture down. It is amazing how much water I dump out. We truly can learn so much from these platforms.

Cable was the biggest time waster for us and it was horrible to just go cold turkey but so worth it as been 4+ years and people often ask how can you live without cable and we say easy. We do other things and we can stream movies ect but we have a collection of old movies from the 1940's which is our jam and often we will watch an old classic or listen to radio. Disconnecting from digital frees you up and until you try it your always connected. Just found your channel and been working on my journey to minimalism for about 5 years now and one way to do this is keep moving to a small place and I don't find that method in a book or on You Tube. I am recovering hoarder and this is a long slow and painful journey and for me I just continue to downsize and declutter. Helps to find postitive channels like yours along my journey. Thanks for sharing

I raised a pig for the freezer and this year instead of planting everything from the nursery, I just plant what I actually eat. Why plant scorpion peppers if I don't like scorching food?! I shop from the garden. Today is eggplant. I make tea for car rides so I don't think I need to stop for anything on the road and I make sure to eat before I leave. Have cut down eating out to about twice a month. Took the tv off the wall and when my expensive phone died, switched to consumer cellular and a $65 phone and I can't tell the difference! Canceled my Audible and got a digital library card with the Libby app and now get all my audio books for free.

I also shop on marketplace for used or free items. If i need something, I go there first. Almost every item in my house was used and free, except my mattress. Its amazing some things people just want gone that are beautiful furniture pieces. Stopped buying new clothes when I had a rip or a scratch on them I got them repaired for example a seam re done is cheaper even if you traveled to the place a few miles away it would be cheaper. My example maybe £15 travel and £20-30 at most for repair. A new jacket for example would be something like £60-70. Stopped buying food that is full price litterally as a plant based person you can freeze everything that is near a day or same day out of date from the reduced section. This also gets into items such as uht milk which has a longer expiry date that doesn't need refrigeration as normal cow's milk does. Hope these tips help people.

Awesome video Gabe! WOW I'm shocked that people can spend that a month on cable! I pay £45 a year for the Surf Network as I love surfing but for me, that's enough - i'm not a TV person - i'm obsessed with travel, mountain biking, natural bodybuilding. I'm into simplifying life. From my experience at observing comments and forums, the more a person buys, the more the product eats their life/time and they become miserable and unsatisfied. Tech wise, I've been able to put my entire digital life on just my MacBook Pro and iPhone (I stream them to an Apple TV box) and that's it. I couldn't be happier - everything is in one place - music, film, photos etc - I don't loose anything, and can find anything instantly :) I gave old CDs, DVDs to charity shops and had a free for all in my front garden over the summer - although most people too weren't that interested in taking the DVDs/CDs. I enjoy not having plastic cases and the clutter and it's nice not having loads of old style tech :) Everything is more zen and soulful :) I remember a lecturer at university saying 'less is more' and he was so right! :) PS WiFi here in the UK is £46 a month for me unlimited with 200mbps or £50 a month for 400mbps - expensive but kind of essential :)

I'm the same with pop. I drink maybe 1 can a quarter if that and its usually if I didn't eat well and need to get out of a brain fog quickly. And while I have a dining room table, I actually use my coffee table which rises up and I got secondhand from my sister. Love it! I'm learning to cut my hair and maintain an undercut, but when it isn't a pandemic I plan go to get it colored every quarter or so that it will be bleached properly and then maintain it myself with off the shelf color which is so much cheaper or just let it fade which can look good to a certain point.

I started cutting my hair during lockdown and haven’t stopped. It looks just as good as when I was paying for that. No cable but when I did have it I only paid $65 a month. Had just the basics. Then I bought a OTA TiVo with no service fees. I have internet because I earn my living with it via computer. Very little eating out. Cook from scratch and have a veggie garden and chickens. I don’t feel deprived at all. I love jigsaw puzzles and belong to a huge swap group to get them for free.

My partner and I also didn't have wifi for a few years, just using phone data and going to coffee shops/libraries for wifi. It worked really well, even if people looked at us like we were nuts. But now with the pandemic and having to do more work from home, our neighbours have graciously let us borrow their Wifi connection! Which makes me wonder why more people don't split wifi costs with neighbours. It's kind of crazy to think that in an apartment building, almost every unit with a wall between them will have a separate wifi router.

I quit buying an automobile 🚗 years ago. No car payments, insurance, fuel, maintenance, tickets, etc are needed to worry about. I saved tens of thousands of dollars ( probably well over $100,000). I rely on my feet 🦶 and legs 🦵 to walk ( good exercise and Vitamin D from the sun) , public transportation, and an occasional cab 🚕 ride to get my destination.

@@karafelfel3028 I really like it! The ingredients are laundry soap bar, (like fels naptha or pink zote,) 20 mule team borax, and washing soda. There are tons or recipes all over KZbin and Pinterest-just with those basic ingredients. some make it powder form, I make liquid, some people get fancy and add essential oils. A little bit goes a long way, the ratios are a little different between top and front loader machines, but it lasts FOREVER! I’m a fan!!! And diva cup is dreams, and the freedom of not having to buy feminine products is ::chef’s kiss::

Transformer table. I plan to get one. At my parents house there’s a huge dining table, since we have a lot of relatives for when they come over, but they RARELY come over, so it takes up too much space 99% of the year. Love the idea of a table and benches that can be extended for those occasions, and small for the rest of the time. I never paid for haircuts either. My aunt used to cut my hair, but I knew she’d never shave it for me, and I wanted a section shaved when that was a trend, so I started doing my own hair. I take a selfie of the back as I go, so I can get a better view of the back, since the two mirror method doesn’t let me see as close up.

Soda is definitely the one addiction that got worse during my very depressing year at a position I hated. Now, its difficult for me to stop drinking soda but not impossible. As much as I say I want to cut cable, we get so many benefits from it like Peacock, sports for my mom and brother, and seeing TV shows on my DVR and accessing it from anywhere. So, cant really complain. Plus living at home means costs are split between everyone. Not a bad thing to live with family at all

About the soda, when I was addicted to the combination of sugar and coffeine in Coca Cola (to the point where I actually got migraines if I didn't have any for half a day), I went to a health consultant, and they told me the healthiest way to cut it out was over a time span of 3 years (for cutting out 2L of Coca Cola per day). [AND, if you're considering it, stay away from the zero-sugar alternatives - they are actually even unhealthier than the sugar!] We agreed on first substituting it with something that has a similarly high amount of sugar, but less/no coffeine (I went with drinking coffee in the mornings, where I need the boost the most, and iced tea) and whenever I feel like I'm doing good with that stage, I look for an alternative with even less sugar that still tastes nice. With this, I have gone from the aforementioned 2L of Coca Cola per day that has 10.6g sugar/100ml to 2L of self-made iced tea that has 2g sugar/100ml (+ one cup of coffee w/ 2 sugarcubes) per day within only a little over a year and will probably reduce the sugar again within the next three months.

Always been a bargain used item shopper. Craigslist, Marketplace mostly furnish my home. I’m also really good at selling things that I no longer need or want when trying to reduce items. Making money back on things you bought it always sweet. Just takes patience. I rarely buy new things if I can help it. Although sometimes things are cheaper at places like Ross than even used online sometimes, like home decor.

Things i stopped buying which helps: 1.) Takeout food, i usually bring my own lunch in tupperware 2.) Coffee, i almost always bring my thermal of hot water and take my packets of instant coffee with me and a cup in my pack 5 days of the week when working. 3.) Spotify, apple music. I now only use soundcloud which works great, only some ads but i can live with it. 4.) clothing, i am still transitioning to the simplest way possible of dressing nice but minimalist. I used to buy expensive clothing every time i went to the mall, now i only buy white t-shirts or black t-shirts at uniqlo and essential wear. It’s pure and you can’t go wrong with the quality, it’s awesome. 5.) Gym, i no longer pay for a membership, i workout by myself outdoors or on my mat inside and try to take frequent hikes. Walks are a big thing i walk everywhere. since i live in ny. 6.) Car, only if u live in a metropolitan area like manhattan it works or brooklyn or queens. otherwise you still might need a car depending where u live. 7.) haircuts, used to get one weekly, did the math, i basically could have easily saved up all the money for a car. I now cut my own hair with my machine. if special event is coming then obviously i go get a clean cut but right now i’m doing home cuts.

I can relate to these struggles. The soda addiction my fiancé has. If you have kids, and they get presents for Christmas and birthdays, a good way not to accumulate too much stuff is if they try to get rid of the same amount of their old toys as they get new ones. We have some neighbors that leave toys out for grabs on their curb before taking whatever’s left to goodwill. Also curious about trying to do capsule wardrobes for the kids.. is that realistic? Lol
