1. Flat surfaces (tables, top of the fridge, etc.): stuff/paper clutters on it. Solution: Eliminate flat surfaces and pick up after yourself. 2. No systems for doing things/no places to put things (example: your keys, wallet.) Solution: Designate a place/"home" for everything to go. Things get less dirty (messy?) by having a place for everything! 3. Messy digital storage. It's like having a messy closet; you can't find anything. Search online for how other people organize their digital problem areas and use their system; it will save you a lot of time. Gabe's video on this will be tagged at the end of this video. 4. Not embracing minimalism soon enough. Thinking it's weird or whatever. Just jump in and it will be done and you will notice/reap the benefits right away! Not sure what tips 5 & 6 are? Good video though!

I got rid of the coffee pot and purchased a small coffee press and tea kettle. The counter is clutter free and the tea kettle sits on the stove and is used all the time. There truly are ways to minimize stuff. I clean and organize homes and that is when I became a minimalist. There is too much going on in the world without having to worry about where things are in my home.

Yes! Agh, as a messy person, I also struggle with flat surfaces. They either need to have *nothing* on top of them or not exist. 😆 if there is a piece of decor or something on top of them, I will inevitably pile other things on top. 🙄

Thank you for your awesome videos! I love that you have other videos going on while your talking, it gets so boring when people just video themselves talking the whole time. I also love that you have the same issues as me and make everything really relatable. Thank you for showing your catch-all room, I have one too and while it doesn’t have wall to wall furniture anymore, it still gets the stuff I don’t know where to put. It’s getting better though, lol! I seem to have had similar issues, only just getting onto it. Keys, digital and flat surfaces do collect things unless you are on to it. I also seem to be collecting stuff at the moment for gift giving and making at the moment but haven’t taken the time to find a place for it while I am doing it..... I am noticing the clutter. Want it clear again!

It is really nice of you to share your "stepping stones per say" to how you got to where you are at as a Minimalist. We all have various ways of approaching and achieving success with Minimalism. I liked using the dynamic approach, but had spent years contemplating my idea of change prior to jumping into it. The "flat surface and clutter stories" you shared are so relatable. Having less surfaces and specific spots to "put everything" like keys makes a world of difference. Speaking about worlds, happy to hear you are getting great results for your "pins on the globe project".......pins will be one purchase made out of necessity .... Lol :-)

Greetings from 2022. Thank you for this video. Your sense of humour about this topic is inspiring, as is your practical advice. Last month I turned 50 and my greatest achievements to my mind was 1. to hang a hook on my door for my keys; 2. to always put my glasses in their case next to my bed (avoids confusion when I wake up in the middle of the night and urgently need to see what is going on); 3. to have a hook for my hairbrush in the bathroom and 4. to make sure I never run out of toilet paper 😄 I hear you about those stupid flat surfaces. OMW. Thank you too for showing the murder room. It was really encouraging. Sending 💖 from Cape Town.

The shots of you searching were hilarious. I just leave my key in the apartment door key hole. But in Switzerland it is very safe Every house door key or building key is different. Keys are the flat type. My apartment door has 3 metal and three metal rods that run through the door middle. These go into the floor, door wall sides and A area on top of the door. This key also opens the main door of all apartment buildings.

The biggest flat surface I struggle with is the floor. I never understood the key thing, I just leave them in my pants pocket and change the pocket contents in the morning to my new pants; place for everything is key though when it comes to cleaning up. My biggest mistake is not getting of the 'buying something as a replacement for doing something, treadmill.

For filenaming on the computer: "This is my regular file [yyyy mm dd]" where [yyyy mm dd] is the date as year, month, day in digits. This way all of the files in alphabetical order are also in date order with the most recent one at the bottom. Someone told me this in a job in 2001 and I've used it ever since.

File system for video creation: In any hard drive that you want, create a root folder (it’s like entering into your house). Then create different rooms in that house for different needs, and inside of each room, you can add additional locations like dressers. Imagine you have inside of that room a place for your t-shirts, pants, jackets, underwear, etc. Example: Root folder: “Creative life.” House rooms: KZbin, clients, papers, etc Now, in that dresser “KZbin,” you will create a folder or space for each video. Before the name of the video, you can add the date, first, year, then the month, and then a descriptive name for the video “20-11 First year of minimalism,” inside of that folder, you can create a few more folders like “videos,” “audio,” “images” (inside of images you can add the thumbnail), extras. So if you want to find this video's thumbnail in a few months, you would go to Creative life > KZbin > 20-11 First year of minimalism > images> and look for the thumbnail. I have created a lot of content, and I have tried soooo many different systems, for me, this is the best one. Don’t use dates or tag names. Just use short and really descriptive words. For example, if you go to my computer and I ask you to find a photo of me in the Eiffel Tower, without me saying anything, you could find it. The location is root> photos> travel> Europe>France>Paris, and then you look for the picture. I always imagine my folder structure like places in my house. If you want a fork, you go to the kitchen. 😉 Thinking like this, you can also create assets that you can share with other projects. For example, in the root> KZbin, you can have one folder named videos (inside of this one you create a folder per video), audio, images, etc., or just assets, this ones you will be sharing them with all your video projects. Your background music, sound effects, motion graphics, model releases, receipts, references, etc., go there, and you don’t need to duplicate files. I hope this helps and I really enjoy your content. Wishing you the best of success in your adventures 🤗

Some of this is weird because keys go in my purse or a key ring holder but I always have my purse in every room with me. I sold my laptop 2 years ago and use my smartphone for almost everything, I really don't need a laptop or computer for emailing or anything anymore. I mostly but bathroom products that I use or food and then bills for overhead and medical.

The worst flat surface is the ground. I can get rid of the tables and cabinets in my room, but then the floor always ends up being where all those things go instead.

I have a dedicated place for keys but my default is to put them in my shoes. I will probably put those shoes on again the next time I go out and in that process I will find my keys. I know. I'm a genius.

I recommend finding reasons for why you want to declutter, here are some of my reasons: • more floor space for exercising • making everything lighter to carry so my next moving experience will be fun rather than stressful • with less stuff it's easier to keep my space clean, I have a bit of a dust allergy so it helps a lot • having a nicer space to look at that feels more like home I have 30 or more reasons but I don't want to ramble lol

@@spring7643 for me right not is the whole idea that less stuff = more time, once I get to have more time I will see where I take it next.

@@Channelbxyz I agree. More time to focus on the most important stuff. Upgrading yourself takes a lot of time.

Dang, I’m pretty much done with the initial hustling and juggling, got myself to a spot that I can rethink my whole situation, but it hasn’t always been like this, want to invest I. The younger folks, like Gabe and the crowd here so they can get to their goals making less mistakes (at least avoiding the ones I made).
