Good for Gabriel for his success: sometimes we romanticize the budget traveller in my opinion; the fact that Gabe has some money to spend and doesn't have to stay in Youth Hostels anymore is a major positive. LOL, I hope he even gets to stay in a Ritz Carlton or two soon for the experience as well.

In Thailand, there is no privately owned beach. Every single beach, on the mainland or islands, belongs to the public. Only exception is when it is a restricted area designated by the government - most of the time it’s for military use. You can own land plots next to the beach but never the beach itself - that always belong to public. So. As long as you can find a way to get on the beach without trespassing private property, no one can charge you any fee to be on the beach.

The first time I went to Koh Tao it was a magical time!! It was 2000 and my first time to Thailand. Koh Tao seemed perfect back then. I went there first as it was near full moon and I wanted to avoid the crowds on Koh Phangan!! It sill has so much natural beauty. Happy Travels

Yeah, I was there five years after you in mid-2000s. Went back to KT in February of last year and could barely recognize the island. So much unsustainable development and building and throngs of people post-covid at that time 12 months ago, absolutely packed on the island. It's really sad what's happened I'm thailand, so many islands and places have just been ruined and overdeveloped. People who were lucky enough to see Thailand in the 1990s and up to the mid 2000s know what I'm speaking about.

The first time I swam with sharks was actually in Shark Bay. Black tipped sharks used to be common, only 3-4 feet long, at least the ones I saw. I was amazed at how gracefully they swam around. They generally do not bite people unless provoked. I also saw a barracuda up close at another bay on the island! It's nice to be reminded of warmer times while it's dumping snow outside! Happy Travels

It's a matter of being a necessary reconnecting with home and taking a break from unfamiliar places and non-stop adventure. Plus some things I need to take care of. But good chance the winter weather will get me back out on the road pretty quick.

Yeah thats oceanfront reataurant on sairee bay, jacked up prices. In Koh Phangan you can eat in the market in the food market in Thongsala for 50-80 baht a dish and 40 bhat resh fruit smoothies. So you can literally have a pad that with shrimp, a green curry and a mango smoothie for 170 bhat, like $5 bucks and there are dozens of picnic tables to sit at. Sairee Bay restaurants have jacked up prices. Phuket and Koh Samui are the really pricey islsnds these days.

I’ve never understood the concept of private beaches around the world. Beaches r public, not private. It’s just that a lot of private areas on the beach are only accessible via a resort, but to say they own the beach and u must buy a drink to sit here is a misrepresentation of the law. Beaches r public, regardless of how u access them. Tell me I’m wrong
