Sorry to tell you this, but Japan Railways operates a frequent train service (every 15 minutes during daytime hours) from JR Sapporo Station to New Chitose Airport taking less than 40 minutes. For future reference, all major cities in Japan operate train lines (or at least a subway or monorail service) to the corresponding primary airport from the adjacent city.

Actually the JR lines can take you directly from downtown Sapporo to New Chitose Airport just under 40min. I believe there’s 5 trains to the airport every hour. Whenever you are taking a Japanese domestic flight, arriving at the airport 1 hour prior departure is more than enough. Matsumoto Airport is the major airport in Nagano Prefecture and there’s a direct flight from New Chitose Airport everyday.

Hi Gabriel, the trips to other locations always seem to be a bit of an adventure. I don't understand why you couldn't take a train back I'm sure flying is faster to arrive but then you had to take two trains. It seems awkward getting to Nagano but that's no rush and in the process, you see other sites. I really do love their train efficacy fast and comfortable and convenient.

When we flew domestically in Japan the flights were also no more than half full. I wonder why that is. Flights are relatively inexpensive in Japan (compared to bullet trains) but don't seem to be used much.
@speedbird0062 жыл бұрын
A lot of regional routes are under the PSO (Public Service Obligation) scheme. The government subsidised the routes in order to maintain air transport service which are vital for the local communities or economy. The domestic flights in Japan are very popular. Tokyo - Sapporo is world's 2nd busiest domestic route in terms of passenger numbers. Tokyo - Fukuoka 4th, Tokyo - Naha 11th, Tokyo - Osaka 15th.

Bullet train is more convenient. No checkpoints and it brings you directly in the center of the city/town. Most airports in Japan are a bit off the city.

When you ride the JR trains, you don't have to split the base fare ticket for each train rides. Just buy a base fare ticket for your entire route and buy each express fare tickets supplementary. It costs much cheaper. By the way, there is a much shorter route from Niigata to Nagano. You'd better do some research in advance.

I guess you need to plug in the airport code when you are looking for local transportation in an unfamiliar area to make sure you are going to the right airport!
@icanfly64772 жыл бұрын
You should have bought the JR Pass, I guess you have spent extra money on buying individual trips. When you have JR Pass, you can reserve the seat online and have it printed in the machine when you are in the train station rather than approach the ticket office. Snow Monkey Onsen without snow at this time, may not be a right time to visit. Matsumoto Castle could be another day trip adding to your stay in Nagano. The smaller airport in Sapporo city , short runway, is famous for having turbopros only ( some gems).ANA´s been always domestic , full of wide bodies, ANA also had a Football-soccer team , ANA ´s travelling internacional is relatively recent, one of the best co. but has fame for being expensive, Sapporo to Niigata 200 usd is not cheap for that short distance ( who the hell are we to criticize? :=) , well you could´ve done it by train . Niigata is right across the sea from Russia, Also flights from Vladivostok to Niigata . But now , covid+war seems all had changed, who knows. Even the famous Ferry Vladivostok-Korea -Japan changed .
@jeremybrahm33262 жыл бұрын
Without looking at maps, people thinking you can go straight in Japan, but people forget that you have to go through mountains to go straight, which is not cheap. The bullet trains going through Niigata have had to go through a lot of mountains to get from Tokyo to the Yukiguki (Snow Country) of Niigata. It was cheaper to share lines to go to Nagano by branching off of the Niigata (Joetsu bullet train). Smaller cities may have flights but many will route you through Tokyo or Osaka. Matsumoto does have the airport, but don't forget that these areas also have mountains around them, so may be a little bumpy when taking off and landing.
